  1. Less. If it were David Holland, I might be interested...
  2. RVG has the green light from me. The remastering on both Love Call and New York sound like they were remastered in a paper bag. FWIW, I like The Empty Foxhole, but Dernado's drumming is not for everyone. Offhand (and I am without my records over the holidays), does anybody know if they were recorded by RVG in the first place? My hunch is that they were not. I have these on original vinyl and, while I think they sound fine, they don't sound like the "average" BN recording from the '60s.
  3. I think even the BBC did mention that he had his fair share of critics... there is nothing wrong with healthy criticism of a monumental figure, having just kicked it or not.

  5. There's gotta be a tree or Dimeadozen somewhere that you could procure this, Rooster.
  6. The first time I heard him was when I saw him, and thought it very good. He was with a couple of French rappers and baritone saxophonist Francois Courneloup, among others.
  7. Yeah, the Murray is what I'm after.
  8. Sometimes, unfortunately, yes.
  9. He's from the Twin Cities. It's a different scene.
  10. OK, thanks for the clarification. I probably won't consciously make an effort to hear this anyway. Herbie, Wayne, Colaiuta and Pattitucci might be another story.
  11. and they did it again a week ago today at ucla!! the most amazing concert with nathan east and vinnie c. and the ucla student wind orchestra. they mostly played wayne and herbie classics with new arrangements and it was breathtaking! and herbie actually played solo a new tune he wrote in tribute to dr. isaku ikeda, the buddhist leader. it was beautiful and i noticed many wet eyes around me! i predict herbie will start writing again in the future (at least many of us hope so)!! Vinnie C. = Vinnie Colaiuta? Great drummer, have him on a disc with Buell Neidlinger that is fantastic. Herbie's music of the '60s is fantastic, but of course he at some point made the decision to a) make money and b) choose how he did that, within an idiom of (somewhat) his own devising. Now, I'm not a huge fan of what he's done since maybe the early '70s, but I do give him props. The Joni thing would've made more sense in 1975 to my ears, but...
  12. You know, I've never been a fan of his music but I always give him utmost respect. RIP, OP.
  13. (Or is this too white for the supremely hip cognoscenti?) I've seen him live and he's good. Dude is actually albino.
  14. Not normally mine, either. Funny how those things go innit?
  15. Anybody got a spare or know where to find a copy of this oddball split session? I was just reminded of it the other day. 16. Can't get with Das EFX, but the Fu-Schnicken scene is hot (hadn't heard them before). I saw, scrolling thru my sister's iPod, the Dap Kings. I didn't feel like listening myself - was too busy digging on Tony Ortega to be bothered. So, I remain uneducated in that but moreso in Brooklyn hip-hop.
  17. You know, I've never heard that record. The selection posted here isn't bad at all, better than I expected anyway.
  18. I really like Scotty Holt with Noah Howard and with Jackie McLean. Wonder whatever happened to him?
  19. Oh, wait, never mind, I guess we don't have to "get in line"...
  20. Wasn't this board almost shut down for lack of funds? This might be not only the perfect stamp of definition on our "little" online community, but also a great opportunity to fundraise for the board and its proprietors.
