  1. I find her AAJ column irritating, and have therefore steered clear. Sorry.
  2. Guy Kopelowicz, aka "brownie," would be a source of information for this question.
  3. I think it's probably pretty easy to get banned from the AAJ boards. I write for the site, but I'd probably be fired if I were let loose in another context there.
  4. I dunno - most of my 7 West Grand Delmarks have the boxed "d" in a dark blue area at the top, a lighter blue or white bottom half, and a horizontal strip on either side of the spindle hole. That's the standard design. The guy I bought my "For Alto" from said it was the 1st issue of that title, and so far that's the only time I've seen the label variation I'm talking about. Others have been the three-part label design. I've never seen a solid blue label on ANY of the later "Modern Jazz Series" or "AACM" titles, frankly. Nessa knows best, and I've never owned an original of the Ira Sullivan (402), but this is news to me.
  5. The Braxton I'm referring to is 1970-ish. It's not "early," but maybe "earlyish."
  6. I assume the dates for Prestige and the Status are a little more "weird." The New Jazz Sounds of Africa has printed on the cover "Includes the New African Bossa-Nova," which was obviously an effort to cash in. Sounds of Africa is also an odd record, and pretty "out" at times, which is probably why I dig it. Bilal Abdurahman's records on Folkways would probably interest some people here. Most are solo, but there is one group recording - the East New York Ensemble de Music - which was reissued on Locust, and which is quite excellent.
  7. Thanks, that's probably the best route. Emailed my GF that information.
  8. Ah shit, sorry to let that slip. Moderator...?
  9. The Eastern Moods LP is what I was trying to think of. Pretty scarce and interesting that it's a trio. My yearning just got even more pronounced...
  10. I have a Braxton around here somewhere with the blue-box "D" inside a large blue circle on a white ground. The vinyl is heavy and the address is Seven West Grand. Probably the 1st for the Braxton, but I assume a mid-period Delmark.
  11. Not to mention Pat's friend, Chris. Certainly one of the better skits of SNL's later years...
  12. Similarly "brittle" sound of the front line, maybe, and thin, top-heavy recording quality. I don't have it accessible right now, but I assume Alderson engineered the Bley. Barrage is a motherfucker - dig how Bley, Gomez and Graves just turn the rhythm around!
  13. I have a copy of this somewhere ...will have to listen. Maybe all three are there but Mongs isn't announced?
  14. Thanks, and yeah, I think you are right about that. Let this thread get away whilst moving and just now getting back to reading the replies. Thanks to all; Nessa offered to burn the material for my GF, as my burn capabilities went out with my burner biting the dust.
  15. Yes, a high-school girl, iirc.
  16. bev is a man Right, I always assumed that anyway. Those English...
  17. Glad you dig the whole package! Sure, it's a "period" piece, but very strong at that. There's a bitch of an LP that Phillips cut with Abdul Wadud and drummer Hasaan Al-Hut (as the Black Unity Trio), that really needs a proper reissue.
  18. Right, like when I was contracted to do the Norman Howard liner notes by ESP, and they gave me an advance pressing with no titles. I had to work from the titles on an old cassette of the master! I won't even get into the jumble that their copyeditor made of the handed-in document...
  19. No clue what's on it, 'cept maybe Pictures of Infinity (Black Lion), which is solid and "out," if memory serves...
  20. Maybe the vinyl hounds will know this, but is the African Moods LP (Prestige) the same session as Spellbound (Status)?
  21. Yeah, that's a fine disc indeed.
  22. FOR CRYING OUT LOUD! The RCA is Jack Montrose, not JR Monterose. Two very different players!!!! I for one am tired of that confusion as well. J.R. gets under my skin, Jack doesn't.
  23. I have some early Delmark titles with the blue "D" in a circle and an otherwise mostly white label. My vinyl is now in storage, but I believe the address would have been 4243 N. Lincoln.
  24. According to person introducing the band, it's Harry Beckett and Marc Charig on trumpets. Ah, so "Chuck Mangione" must've been a misprint...
  25. Yeah, probably mine too. I have two on New Jazz and one on Riverside; there's a scarce one on Prestige that I long for...
