  1. Yeah, Solo Piano - that's serious business. Those early Ellis sides are great, including the Candid. Was just spinning the great Pacific Jazz session, Essence (w/ Paul Bley) the other day.
  2. I live just a few blocks from there, but have never eaten there. So 's good? Sometimes I find there's spice in everything that I order and it's a bit too much. . . . But with careful ordering, it's a soulful eating experience. Try it out! Thanks for the recommendation. I mean, I can walk there, so... seems like a good idea. Glad you and the missus had a good 4th of July feast; I ate stir-fried shrimp, pasta and steamed broccoli with my parents before watching the Houston fireworks.
  3. I understand what you're saying, but I get a hell of a lot more out of say, SY, Dinosaur Jr., etc. now than I ever did in high school, when that music was at its zenith. I don't really think about how great getting stoned in the back parking lot listening to "Suck You Dry" was when I throw on a Mudhoney record. Funny, too, I remember my dad playing Anthony Braxton recs when I was a kid, but listening to Conference of the Birds doesn't evoke recollections of homework at the kitchen table. To bring it more recently, I got into the Incredible String Band after college when I was living in New York. Now, my recollections of that time have nothing to do with ISB and all to do with the time/place outside of tastes. Also, I can't understand why I even listened to that shit, but didn't get rid of the albums for whatever reason... but anyway, I guess we're different in that respect.
  4. Yes - I love Jaki best when he plays solo. He takes the listener to all kinds of places! I think I might be with you there. Haven't heard this one.
  5. By the way, I think the idea of listening to music for purely nostalgic reasons hits a few nails on the head w/r/t Wilburys and the Dylan recs in question (indeed, many of his records are pretty damn questionable if you ask me). That's an entirely different reason to spin a disc than - say, edc or I do - but it's not a dealbreaker either. Just not my thing. Perhaps Cameron Crowe's... yecch.
  6. Mac 10 - yikes!
  7. I'm jealous, though he don't play bebop much these days...
  8. I'm jealous! Unless you let me make an offer...
  9. Thanks, info was forwarded to interested parties!
  10. It may be the case... but it's a very good record.
  11. Jazz Composers' Orchestra - Communication - (Dutch Fontana orig, gatefold)
  12. Archie Shepp - Three For a Quarter, One For a Dime - (Impulse orig)
  13. I live just a few blocks from there, but have never eaten there. So 's good?
  14. Yes, he took a wonderful shot indeed. Just talked to Archie the other day and he seems very well!
  15. There's got to be something Rolf Kuhn did in this vein. Admittedly, I take my Kuhn Brothers recordings with a more acoustic madness vibe, but...
  16. The last one with that band was solid, well-played music, though it didn't light any fires for me. Good, though.
  17. Happy birthday and thanks for the music!
  18. Most Get Backs are needle drops, as I can tell you they did not have access to the tapes in ESP's case.
  19. Sonny Simmons - Music from the Spheres - (ESP orig) w/ Barbara Donald, Jim Zitro, Bert Wilson, Mike Cohen and Juney Booth...
  20. Original vinyl. Mexican Aylers? Curious...
  21. They sound fine. I have Bells/Prophecy and Slugs' Saloon in this format; used to have the new Spiritual Unity but gave it to a friend. Never had the mini-LP Get Back editions, so I don't know about those. I have nice copies of all the original ESP Aylers, so didn't feel the need for digital - however, my experiences with receiving copies has been positive. The Slugs' dates were originally on Base and, in addition to the low-fi sound, were pressed horribly. The new 2CD set is a marked improvement and has a great cover shot, to boot.
  22. Test - Ahead - (Now Jazz Ramwong) actually better than I remembered it...
