  1. And, FWIW, it's not my goddamn fault - or anybody's - if we weren't born in 1938. That line of ball-busting certainly is getting rather dreary.
  2. Threat is a valid byproduct of new art, as food also has its byproducts (often, shit, but there are others). Whether shit is the "purpose" of eating a taco, I'm not entirely convinced.
  3. I mean, I KNOW that is/was the case. But whether it's the purpose of the music is, sometimes, another issue.
  4. Glenn Branca - Sym. #6 - (Blast First orig) w/ Page Hamilton of Helmet!
  5. Good point - Gebers and Brotz are out of the business, as I understand it. And that whole thing is a mess. Still...
  6. Thanks for repairing the confusion. I have more experience with Sultan's music than Santos's. I look forward to checking out the archive!
  7. I'd rather people enjoy the music than be threatened by it.
  8. I wouldn't want sex without grunting and groaning; why would I want music this way?
  9. Jesus... one alternate is already on Fuck de Boere, and the rest is on the (as I understand it) in-print FMP CD. I've clamored on and on and on before about how bullshit some of that UMS stuff is, but this may even beat out Starship Beer... I love Peter's music, and that's a fine LP, but I've got a stack of live Brotzmann group live material that hasn't seen the light of day in any proper form. Most of it sounds excellent, and yet Atavistic isn't doing anything like collecting this stuff and putting it out. A 5CD unissued tracks/concerts compilation would be really something - say, covering 1966-1976? Corbs undoubtedly has the German radio contacts, no?
  10. Alas, I only have the CD. The name itself gets under my skin! And I thought the band I was in, The Piltdown Ensemble, had it going on...
  11. Ian Brighton - Marsh Gas - (Bead) w/ Radu Malfatti, Phill Wachsmann, Marcio Mattos, Jim Livesey and Roger Smith. Plink-plonk!
  12. There's always eBay... the LP is usually cheap; I assume the CD would be too.
  13. Yes, Is is quite good. The side-long title track (on the A side) is spare, moody free stuff somewhere between an ESP session and a weirdo early ECM title (but without the teatime in Greenland feel). Don't forget, chewy, that your boy John Gilmore and Corea play together on Pete La Roca's Turkish Women at the Bath. Maybe not your cup of tea, but Maupin also plays well on two '60s Marion Brown sides, Marion Brown Quartet (ESP) and Juba-Lee (Fontana), not to mention the Brown ECM date.
  14. Yeah, it's kind of hard to fathom where to start... w/r/t the article, that is.
  15. Great record... an early favorite from when I was just getting into the music. It's interesting how Brown's work progressed/diverged from this point. Oh, and yeah, Grachan does solo a lot.
  16. You got that from cuteoverload.com, didn't you?
  17. Wasn't the original poster asking for some baby steps that would take him to the "other side?" In this case, mid-60s Jackie, Hill, Dolphy and Ornette would be a great place to start...
  18. Is that akin to the "bug" that people like Elton Dean, Gary Windo etc. used in the '70s? This was apparently because they were playing in loud rock bands and would otherwise not be heard so well...
  19. Yeah, I'm picky in that regard... perhaps unnecessarily so!
  20. Jazz Magazine (later called Jazz & Pop) was owned by Bob Thiele so it shouldn't suprise you they exhibited a "much more positive attitude toward the Impulse! label". Thanks. That explains A LOT. I have a compendium of interviews from J&P called Black Giants, but didn't realize the depth of the connection. Interesting where Tchicai figures in the altoists' poll. I think he's great, but it's a surprise to see him so high.
  21. Haven't heard Karma in years. Wasn't so into it then, but it was a) not the first Pharoah I'd bought and b) not "in context" of the music's release. Not that that matters to me, but it seems to often around here. If I saw a clean vinyl copy of it, though, I'd probably pick it up again...
