  1. Indeed, Happy Birthday! Hope to someday hit the store...
  2. I'd get the ESP-Disk jewel case versions that have been reissued by the label itself. The boxed set is, according to Bernard, completely pillaged and unauthorized. The Calibre issues sound fine, but I'd rather go to the label itself to make sure estate royalties are being paid.
  3. Alice Coltrane - Huntington Ashram Monastery - (Impulse orig) w/ Rashied Ali and everybody's favorite, Ron Carter... excellent LP though.
  4. Any of our members in the Berlin area know of anything? My Berlin experiences were limited to Podewil and so forth, for FMP-related insanity, but would like to know what is recommended for weekly/nightly gigs.
  5. Just James Taylor's... Fave recent David ("Wendys") Thomas quote: "a punk is what they call you in jail." Yeah, understood re: 3-Way Tie. I got on the bus long after the passing of the band. Mudhoney: Skipped their "Americana" for the most part, tho the collab with Jimmie Dale Gilmore was actually solid.
  6. Not even at gunpoint. Hey, that's "my" axe... All the best, in any event.
  7. The only Cedar as a leader I have is the aptly titled Cedar! on Prestige. Recall it being solid, tho been a while since it got the needle. Amen on the Magic Triangle material, good stuff.
  8. The thing I don't understand is why y'all are getting freaked out if someone's having a little fun with your taste in country-fried AOR rock. My tastes in music - which run the gamut - seem to spark amusement coupled with ire from most people, and I really have no interest in defending what I like/don't like. If someone wants to lay deep slag on Mudhoney, Arthur Doyle, or Euro-racket, hey, I'll be amused to see what they come up with!
  9. Dudes... y'all need to take it day by day!
  10. Yeah, 30 is about the time for those sorts of feelings. Sometimes I miss being 22, but mostly I don't.
  11. I tend to like "half-wipe" myself. That's what I always strive for...
  12. The Braxton quote is nice, didn't see that earlier...
  13. Since I can't find my copy of Selflessness, I guess I'm soon to be out $10...
  14. I'm not a huge fan of the band on the Columbia records, though Monk and Monkishness are still there in full force. I'd say the records themselves, and the compositions, are certainly fine. I like "roughness" and, to a degree, have felt that the Columbia production did not serve that aspect of his music. But it's also true that most composers do want their work to be polished, so I may be in the perceptual minority here.
  15. I hope the record is getting some sales so far. Beefheart is, yeah, a different bag entirely. Hard to compare.
  16. Same here. I like "Brilliant Corners," of course, as well as "Locomotive" and "Jackie-ing" a lot. But there are so many... same with Herbie Nichols.
  17. I, for one, like seeing it as much as possible. Nothing sexist about appreciating a beautiful woman!
  18. "Vastly inferior lyricist" is a little heavy-handed as a way to get his critical opinion across, I'd say. One could say the same thing more "nicely."
  19. I hear you on the pants situation... had a nice pair of Levis boot-cut jeans that did me well for YEARS, but since then nothin' doin'. I wonder where Lacy and Waldron got their pants? We should be more concerned where Lacy got that dope sweater ca. 1974, though...
  20. :tup The title cut, my favorite on the album (and one of my favorite Brown tunes period) does not feature Maupin, fwiw.
  21. The last ten seconds were solid; let's see what happens in the next ten.
  22. I remember, vaguely, when I was 10 and heard the Wilburys. Didn't like it then. Probably wouldn't now. But... if that's your thing, whatevs, it's 2007s. Enjoying the Wu-Tang supergroup at present. Not that into 3-Way Tie For Last, fwiw.
  23. With cover art by Vinny Golia!
  24. Boorrinngg...
  25. Sonic Youth and Yamatsuka Eye - TV Shit - (Ecstatic Peace!)
