  1. I'm with you, Clem. It just, for me, doesn't happen with jazz LPs as much. If you're talking NZ/Flying Nun, I'm not as up on that as I should be... educate, pls. I was merely concurring with the "pop" end of the jazz spectrum which, whether right or not, has been my reading of late-late-late Miles. Edit: senseless r&r name-drops removed.
  2. Noah Howard - The Black Ark - (Polydor Freedom orig) w/ Doyle, M. Ali, Sirone, Earl Cross, Juma, and Leslie (?) Waldron on piano...
  3. I have spent enough time with rock records that now, to me, sound rather dated. For me this doesn't happen as often with jazz records, whether they were recorded fifty years ago or ten.
  4. Alan Douglas was a producer for United Artists Jazz, so no way was he a stranger to the form. Impact sound also was, iirc, where a number of ESP sides were recorded. Hence, the equipment he/they may have been using was not up to BN/Impulse/etc standards. I haven't heard the session in question yet, but I can't imagine it was entirely Douglas's fault. The reports I've heard from a few pals who have heard it speak highly of Gilmore's playing here, fwiw.
  5. You wouldn't return a $40 new record with a tick in one of the tracks?!
  6. Sometimes. I did some writing for the City Pages a year or two ago that mostly centered on weird rock/folk/underground stuff. Occasionally I review oddball "new music" recordings as well. For example, a recent reissue of the first Blue Gene Tyranny on Lovely... which is... lovely.
  7. Huh. Must've been recorded in '69 when Mobley was hanging around the Pan-African Festival set of folks. Too bad it wasn't with Burrell, CT, Grachan, Earl Freeman and Philly Joe!
  8. Which? There are two Shepp dates Mobley plays on!
  9. Thats incredible ! i bought many LPs and CDs from them without any flaw. They are usually very cooperative. As Brownie said, the online shop is separated from their regular shop. I had the same problem of the shop/site separation when I was in Paris. Trouble is, the site had reserved some items for me and told me to pick them up there! It was, naturally, a minor fiasco. Much later, I had the problem of paying 40 Euro for an item that they then sold to somebody else! I was credited, but it sort of soured me on the whole PJC thing... of course, up to then I had many positive experiences.
  10. So, to echo Michel's comment, at least we know of one person who bought the Pretorias when they came out!
  11. Yeah, I was in his shop and thought about getting it there. I think he was selling it fairly cheaply.
  12. I have a neighbor named Miles - don't think it's that unique. Yeah, strangely I've known several.
  13. James has a copy now for over $120... I think I could've had it for $50 a few years ago!
  14. Well, it may not be that utterly unique, but I do like the name "Maceo." As in bassist Maceo Gilchrist, from Byron Allen's ESP record...
  15. Indeed. Those LPs on Red are also pretty awesome...
  16. Yeah, I've spun it a couple of times since then. It's a classic, though I'll admit to having heard it very often - perhaps too often! Just finished: Jackie McLean - Destination Out! - (BN Liberty Stereo) Grachan's contributions are particularly outstanding!
  17. I remember when the reissue came out, which even a few years ago was pretty expensive. I'm sure it's a good record, and probably I should've bought the reissue!
  18. and "Baby." Or are you referring to Booby Hutcherson?
  19. Grachan Moncur III - New Africa - (BYG Actuel orig) Side 2 is particularly nice...
  20. Charles Mingus - Presents Charles Mingus - (America pressing of Candid orig) Now: Eric Dolphy - Memorial Album - (Dutch Fontana pressing of FM orig)
  21. Bill Dixon - Intents and Purposes - (RCA-Victor original) Certainly a desert island record!
  22. There's an inexpensive Douglas reissue available out there from the US. Recording quality was never great but it's OK. Yeah, I'm being a pussy and avoiding the reissue. Probably should just shut up and buy it.
  23. Indeed... though I have lately been preferring the post-Maps Nikki Sudden work, esp. Jacobites w/ Dave Kusworth. That first LP on Glass is a masterpiece! Right now, J.R. Monterose Alive In Amsterdam (Heavy Soul Music original), w/ Bennink, Groentjie, Steve Boston and Jan Jacobs...
  24. I only have Basra. I still haven't heard this one, though I have been looking out for a vinyl copy for years...
