  1. yeah, this is a 15 year old Mac with an external drive. At a certain point, if it's not readable on numerous CD readers, it has to be the disc as that's the only thing in common here. And then what am I doing with a $40 piece of unusable aluminum?
  2. Closing the loop, it doesn't read on my computer either -- my Mac just spit it right back out. So I will be attempting to return it to CD Japan.
  3. Hello! Just a short note to let people know -- and apologies for the late notice, been busy as hell -- that esteemed musicians and board members Karl Evangelista @ep1str0phy and @AllenLowe will be performing next Wednesday at Tubby's in Kingston, New York. Karl will be playing music with his long-running duo Grex (with M. Rei Scampavia), and Allen will also be working in duo with frequent pianist collaborator Lewis Porter. The cost at the door is $15 and the advance ticket price is $10: https://tubbyskingston.lyte.com/3707166 Allen & Lewis are on first at 8pm, followed by Grex. I know some board members live in the area and it'd be great to see you there.
  4. yeah, I've proofread the notes for a few of Lander's comps. They're all quite fascinating musically and the notes themselves are a real education! Re: Lovens, saw him twice -- once with the Schlippenbach Trio and once with 2X3=5 (Parker/Guy/Lytton/Lovens/Schlippenbach). Both concerts were amazing. Most of my Schlippenbach experiences have been with Lytton or as a solo pianist, but the OG Trio is really on another level.
  5. Haha, well, you got me on festive socks and thick glasses, but the rest of it doesn't track. Anchor Steam is good. It's been decades since I've had it, though -- the proliferation of microbrews and faux microbrews kind of pushed it out of rotation and their distribution took a hit in the last 15 years as well. You'd think Sapporo would've fixed that but they didn't. Also, I have read that the employees put in a competitive bid to buy it out from Sapporo but I'm not sure if that will work out. Hopefully.
  6. I only have the Twardzik/Freeman split, but I love his playing & tunes on there. Sublime stuff. I've perhaps said this elsewhere but working with Shipp on this book and getting to experience his playing in so many contexts has gotten me to listen to the piano in a very different way, think about harmonies differently (as a non-musician), etc.. and Twardzik hits me very hard now, whereas I just did not catch all the subtleties (and some of the not-subtle parts) before.
  7. Forced Exposure will list Singularity Codex over the weekend, so interested readers in the US can also buy there!
  8. I think around a hundred, maybe more, were done with hand painted covers, and another few hundred or so with the gold paste-on slick (which is the version I have). There was only one pressing of the vinyl, probably no more than 500. I would expect this copy to land around $10K. Too much, in my opinion, but people with money like to buy things.
  9. yeah, tried it on my 30 year old DVD player (which plays everything else) and my 2-year-old Subaru CD player. It could be a defective disc, I'm not sure.
  10. I guess I may just have to listen to it online, as my trusty but very old CD player seems fine with every other aluminum disc I own. What a pain in the ass.
  11. my SHM is getting this too. I've never dealt with CDJapan and am wondering how easy returns are. to me it looks like a blank CD but this is also the first SHM I've ever owned.
  12. Yep, great artist indeed.
  13. https://trostrecords.bandcamp.com/album/konzert-f-r-12-traktoren love this record...
  14. Amazing story. Seems like a great guy.
  15. Listening to him with Bill Evans is what got me to appreciate him. I'm a fan. RIP, and thanks.
  16. yes, I need to revisit that Ayler set too. Bought it immediately upon release!
  17. Nice. Have the originals, as well as one he did for Muse and a date with Frank Wright (!). Lovely.
  18. yes, I imagine the sound is pretty accurate in terms of experiencing the live balance -- of course, nothing can really put you "there" unless you were there, but it's probably close. Elvin was loud and Dolphy as far as I know hadn't really played with him until working with Coltrane, so was probably still adjusting. Alderson's engineering is interesting -- to me it seems much more documentarian than stereophilic, and I appreciate that while knowing that for some settings it isn't ideal. But I like what he did on ESP and Prestige (and Reprise -- he was Tom Rapp's go-to recordist, from what I understand).
  19. ^ Yup. I am looking forward to the expanded/remastered Pharoah. Will scoop the CD set.
  20. Blow-Up is awesome. I'd completely forgotten that Birkin is in it! RIP.
  21. Interesting article, thanks for posting. Learned quite a bit.
