  1. correct, thanks for the reminder about Davie. I have one of his prints actually. Mellé is cool. I don't know the size of his works, and wonder if any/how many were done outside the context of album design.
  2. Yeah, I almost left once because of clementine but we worked it out and are cool. I miss Paul Secor. It's easy enough to mute posts by people that annoy you. I've done that for one or two folks, none of whom have (so far) posted in this thread. Surely some have done the same for me.
  3. howzit sound? I do really like this record a lot. My clean original sounds good but the private pressing isn't perfectly quiet.
  4. Peter Ind I seem to recall reading somewhere that Bob Thompson (painter) also played drums a bit. He was close with Steve Lacy, Archie Shepp, Ornette, Don Cherry, and others.
  5. Muhal Richard Abrams Milford Graves (kinetic sculpture) also going the other way, referencing Penck above, there was the Artist's Jazz Band in Toronto (of which Snow was a member) and the Park Place Gallery jazz band (unrecorded 60s free jazz ensemble comprised of sculptors and painters associated with the gallery). yes to Bennink, thanks for the reminder. Also, Misha Mengelberg was loosely associated with Fluxus in its Amsterdam satellite. I don't know how much visual work he did (the ICP 002 maze was his, IIRC) but he was part of that scene in the mid-60s. Keith Rowe (not sure if you want to call him a jazz musician per se)
  6. Roscoe, yep! That book is tremendous. Also, Bill Dixon Richard "Dickie" Landry (an accomplished painter and photographer as well as saxophonist) Michael Snow (painter, sculptor, filmmaker, pianist, trumpeter) Marzette Watts (studied painting at the Sorbonne) Rob Mazurek Peter Brötzmann Peter Kowald Sven-Åke Johansson A.R. Penck (known more as a painter but also recorded prolifically as a drummer, keyboardist, and bassist) Alfred 23 Harth Rodrigo Amado (great photographer in addition to being a heck of tenor player). Vandermark is also an excellent photographer. Ornette
  7. Yes indeed. The drum parts written for Cleve Pozar on Dixon's Intents and Purposes are pretty incredible as well. Whole record is a masterpiece. But I have a hard time thinking of his music as understated in any way!
  8. yeah. Collier was thinking of a Rothko or an Ad Reinhardt painting. He wanted to get inside of the colo(u)r with his music.
  9. I've never thought about this really, but how does one correctly pronounce his last name? STRAHK-vits? yeah, I haven't dug that out in many, many years. Will try to do so when I'm back home this weekend.
  10. my original LP copy of the Collier is stereo. Record is in "great nick" but the thin cover is a bit tatty. Sounds great, though.
  11. incredible record
  12. Yes! Those Lipscomb records are fantastic. The Les Blank film is unreal as well.
  13. Absolutely! So many greats on Arhoolie and related sub-labels. He really did a service.
  14. Intakt for sure, from the very beginning.
  15. I know Doug. Really nice guy. Think he's semi-retired but I could be wrong about that.
  16. lovely album. Got it from Academy Records over 20 years ago now.
  17. Yup. I think a big part of Mosaic's model becoming narrower and narrower over time is what they can actually license. I'm all for some of the releases but it's getting to be less and less interesting. And yeah, Scott, Williams, and Allen for sure -- Redd and more Akiyoshi would be great too. But I don't see any of this happening.
  18. I wonder whether the reissues are legit? Original imprint was an educational project run by French socialists. The Shepps are, I think, the only jazz records they did.
  19. Awesome record -- the original sound isn't all that great, but it is HOT.
  20. Will definitely check this. Also enjoyed watching some footage on YouTube of Rodrigo Amado's new/ish group with von Schlippenbach, Flaten, Gerry Hemingway.
  21. yeah, all those Noord sessions are hot stuff. Glad you enjoyed the interview! Re: Hinze, he's in fantastic form on Dick van der Capellen's "The Present Is Past," released on Relax in 1967. https://www.discogs.com/release/7000631-Dick-Van-Der-Capellen-Trio-The-Present-Is-Past It's an excellent and little-known Dutch avant-garde jazz record. And I think the Mariano is good, too.
