agree, for some reason the OJC's from the early 90's sound fine. Unlike most cd's from that time I don't have a problem with the OJC's. Enjoying the K2 of All Morning Long. Thanks to the tip in this thread.

Paul was considered a good drummer back in the Hamburg days and when the Beatles came back to Liverpool before they blew up and when they didn't have their own gigs Paul would sometimes sit it with other bands and play drums. However when Ringo walked out on the White Album sessions they couldn't wait for him to get back as they felt Ringo was the anchor.

Definitely discussion of this book way upstream the thread. I agree--I've probably read it (in toto) about three times now. If I come across a copy I will give it a go. Thanks everyone.

I have not as of yet. As a kid I had the Hunter Davies book The Beatles which was written before they broke up. I now have: The Complete Beatles Recording Sessions: The Official Story of the Abbey Road by Mark Lewisohn A Hard Day's Write : The Stories Behind Every Beatles Song by Steve Turner Anthology (which should be called Mythology but makes a nice coffee table book) The Beatles: The Biography by Bob Spitz I think the Spitz and Lewisohn are two that offer good insight without a lot of personal interpretation by the authors. Here, There and Everywhere: My Life Recording the Music of the Beatles by Geoff Emerick and Howard Massey looks like a good read that I want to check out.

2nd, I couldn't say any better.

Report back after you crank up Abbey Road.

Agree, I was listening to Plus 4 last night. Sonny with Max Roach and Clifford Brown and it doesn't get a mention? Still prefer the 60's titles.

Adrian Peterson is going to be a problem for everybody this year. Screw Favre and his pho Lambough leap yesterday, the WR was like get off me old man I can smell your denture glue. What was up with the fake punt/ run with Bears last night deep in their own territory? Cutler looked like crap. Go Niners!

Maybe they could have kept their group together if they had used Rotosound stings.

The Bob Spitz. A friend loaned it to me a couple years ago. At around thousand pages and having thought I knew everything or wanted to know about the Beatles I never got around to it till a couple weeks ago. Once you get to when Beatlemania starts to pick up it's a great page tuner which really takes you right there with what was going on. The early part while not as fun does give you insight into their personality traits/issues. The book’s intent is not to mythologize or slander anybody but I will say after finishing it probably the only Beatle I would have wanted to “have a beer with” would have been Ringo. More on the Abbey Road re-master. She’s So Heavy just rocks the house down now, on Here Comes The Sun when Paul’s bass comes in it is now a wow moment. I had forgot that song even had bass on it. On You Never Give Me Your Money the reverb on the little guitar solo is so luscious. The three guitar solos on The End you can really pick up on who is playing which solo now. Listening to the suite that closes Abbey Road I found myself chuckling in disbelief at how good it is and the flood of happy memories it brought back. Ok, time for the Grant Green to get the same remaster box and Rock Band treatment. ☺

On Impulse and The Bridge.

The defense and the way they don't make productive outs doesn't help the fact the line up isn't good at all. The great news is the pitching has been even better than expected and going into next year they addressed the needs of the fifth starter (if Penny comes back thats Six) and a 2nd baseman. Its mid September and the Bay Area is still taking Giants so thats a good thing.

That was on the outmost track (the track that circles the label) on the original British release of Pepper's. If you played it backwards with your finger on the label, they're singing what sounds like "We're gonna fuck you like Supermen." (Really, I'm not making this up...I've heard it.) In the Bio I just finished that was obviously unintentional but when it was brought up to them Paul's reaction in trying to keep their image was along the lines of I guess you can hear all kinds of stuff if you play anything backwards where as of course John loved it. It's been a fun week, I can't get over how great Abbey Road sounds on these.

I am finding the same, while much louder but also warm and clear. I am hearing not so much isolation but space (in floating surrounded by air quality) in the instruments if that make sense. Believe it or not but Revolution #9 was also a blast. Maybe I am older now and have gone through a electronica/ DJ and experimental music phase but I having a hard time on why people hate on it so much.

Go Giants, you guys are running away with it, help a brother out. Sigh, the Rockies have the easier schedule here on out. If the Giants split the Phil-Mil road trip I will be happy. And the Rocks are reeling. They have lost 6 of their last 10 games. They have the hitting, but not the pitching. and since this post the Rockies have won 9/10. Thanks, thanks a lot. Not that the season is over but the fat lady is walking up to the mic. Considering the Giants and everybody else in the NL West except the Padres is way better than I thought they would be its hard to get too upset.

I thought the same thing about 10 pages in! I remember a lot of excitement about these two....... Definitely! The recent Miles 50th Anniv. box had quite a bit of discussion too. Deservingly so all three are classics that I go back to regularly. Re: KOB 50th. Just when I thought I would never want to hear KOB again the 2 disc remaster including the Miles 58 sessions blew me away.

Thats a great tune, when I am in the mood for it I love Big Youth. Track that stood out for me this week was: Sea Song - Bill Connors - Theme to the Guardian Gorgeous acoustic guitar record.

I think the ending of the this review sums it up nicely. http://www.hemagazine.com/Burger_Bloviatio...tereo_remasters "So, yeah, maybe I won’t go running for Please Please Me or With the Beatles at every opportunity, but I’m nonetheless happy that I sat down and really immersed myself in them, perhaps for the first time. And really, in my opinion, that’s one of the greatest things about these new releases. People are clamoring to sit down and really listen to these albums in a way that no one really seems to sit down and experience music anymore. I find that terribly exciting." Allen, I think you and everybody else looking to just pick up a couple will be very happy with at least the individual stereo remasters of the White Album and Abbey Road.
-
Yeah, thats a great one. I love the cover. Bev, I think the differences in these releases would make it worth your time to at least pick up a couple of the individual stereo remasters.

Still waiting for Revolver and Abbey Road to show up from Amazon but I picked up a copy of Magical Mystery Tour yesterday. I never owned it on CD before so I can only compare it to the old vinyl but it sounds amazing. I was never a big fan of Blue Jay Way but on the new remaster its becoming a favorite. The mellotrons and production on it is mesmerizing. I Am The Walrus, Strawberry Fields are a total blast. While not as impressive as the While Album remaster I was still blown away by MMT. If I am not burned out on the Beatles by the weekend I will compare the Purple Chick Mono's of Rubber Soul, Revolver and Peppers to the new Stereo Remasters and put in my two cents. My local record store did confirm that the 180 gr individual Mono vinyl should come out in November for those that can wait, I think EMI wants to sell as many versions of these titles as possible on CD first. I am also just about finished with the Bob Spitz Beatles Biography which I can't put down. Highly recommend.

I got my copies of the individual Stereo Remasters of Rubber Soul and the White Album yesterday. The While Album sounds freaking amazing. I was expecting it to sound better but not be blown away. Can't wait for Revolver and Abbey Road to show up in my mail. For those like holding off on the Mono Box like myself I read that in mid November that individual Mono and Stereo releases will come out on 180 gr Vinyl. I am holding off on Peppers till the Mono Vinyl comes out. Updated with vinyl info from the blog where I read it: http://myvinylreview.blogspot.com/2009/05/...and-stereo.html "Given the fact that it is unlikely that EMI would source vinyl releases directly from the analog tapes, hopes have turned to the possibility that high resolution 24/192 digital masters sourced from the original analog tapes will be used for the vinyl. This was done for the vinyl and sacds of the Rolling Stones Abkco remasters and the Doors vinyl boxset released last year. While there are varying opinions of the Doors boxset, the Stones vinyl was almost universally praised for its sound quality. And while the use of a high-rez master doesn't automatically result in good sound, it makes for a potentially very nice sounding set."

I have no clue on how this will effect the people that pre-ordered on Amazon or the long term effets on EMI since they will put out another batch of the Mono Box later in October to meet the demand from what I was told. To give you some real numbers on how it will effect local merchants short term I asked my local mom and pop vinyl store about this today and he said he ordered 4 Mono Boxes for people that pre-ordered through him and he is only getting 1. He called his contacts at Amoeba SF (the biggest independent record store in San Francisco) to see if they could help him out and they laughed and said they ordered 150 Mono Boxes for Wednesday and are only getting 10 from the distributors. On Ameba's web site their is no option to pre order the Mono or Stereo Box. Again this all may just increase demand later in the year but in the short term it looks like some people are losing money.

With the bay bridge down I decided to stay put all weekend. Goals so far and completed: Re-string and oil the fretboards of my 3 guitars, hikes with the dog and wife, listen to jazz vinyl and read the Bob Spitz Beatles bio.
