  1. ^ True but you could even go back to For Sale with Im Loser, big leap lyrically from "From Me To You". Even on Hard Days Night you have lyrics like on I'll Cry Instead "I've got a chip on my shoulder that's bigger than my feet" and on If I Fell In Love has the following evil revenge verse at the end: And that she will cry When she learns we are two 'cause I couldn't stand the pain And I would be sad if our new love was in vain
  2. Very sorry, the post above I meant the artist Danilo Rae and he has a new album out titled Lost In Europe. Very creative style, if you like Stefano Bollani give him a listen.
  3. I just picked up a nice solo piano release by Lost in Europe titled Lost In Europe on e-music. I really like it so far, he is getting lots of good press these days.
  4. The new Stefano Bollani - Stone in the Water is a gem. So much better than the solo one he put out for ECM a few years back.
  5. The mono of the White Album freaked me out. I have never heard a mono of it before as I grew up with the stereo vinyl, its a completely different beast in mono. The guitars have a more dirty distorted sound, different effects on the vocals and double tracking. I am hearing a lot of stuff that was never put on the stereo release. The rockers are more down and dirty but at times I am missing the wide expanse of the tunes in stereo and some of the songs really need that. While I am over the moon with the new stereo of the White Album I am really glad I got to experience the mono. It's more of a hard hitting "hot mess" in mono where the stereo just feels more like a brilliant over reach. Like Peppers its another one where you need to hear both.
  6. Changes 1 & 2 are both excellent. That was the first time I heard Don Pullen and I was amazed that the piano could be played that way. I was talking about Mingus last week and saying how its a shame I don't listen to his Impulse and beyond recordings anymore because they are brilliant. I find my self going for Ah Hum, Mingus Dynasty, The Charles Mingus Quintet & Max Roach, East Coasting and Cafe Bohemia period right now. For later period Mingus I have to be in the mood for it.
  7. Face melting?! Dude, did you wander in over from the Grateful Dead thread? Ok wrong term. Its more like a Mike Tyson punch into the abdomen that stops you in your tracks when the bass and drums come in and then when Lennon starts singing its the left hand haymaker that floors you. Just awesome. I did a head to head comparison of the mono Help vs the single stereo (not the 65 stereo in the mono box) and while there are a few songs I prefer in stereo like Hide Your Love Away, Lose That Girl and Yesterday, over all the Mono blows away the Stereo. The Sgt. Pepper head to head was quite interesting. The version of Lucy is way more psychedelic and the versions of Rita/Good Morning rocks harder but the versions of Mr. Kite, Within And Without You and Day In The Life are epic in stereo. The mono version makes the album flow together better but the those magic moments on the stereo are just something else, like seeing your favorite movie in wide screen blue ray. Both are worth having.
  8. You're right about that, I haven't developed much of a taste for avant-garde jazz. That's why I'm proceeding with some caution when exploring Mingus a little further. Jackie McLean's 60's Blue Notes are about as deep as I've ventured into avant-garde and those work for me because McLean always seemed to keep at least one foot firmly planted in hard-bop. From the sound samples I've listened to so far, there hasn't yet been anything that has outright turned me off. The sound samples to Pithecanthropus Erectus sound a bit out there but at the same time, there's something there that makes me curious to hear more. If your a Jackie McLean fan, Pithecanthropus Erectus is a must.
  9. Wife is out doing chores, got my friends mono box cranked up starting with Help because I know the new stereo version well. Review: Holy Crap! the mono version of Ticket To Ride is face melting! I everything I read about it did not prepare me for what I felt 5 seconds into it. Wow!!
  10. Pithecantropus Erectus At the Bohemia Blues and Roots Tijuana Moods Town Hall Concert 1964 (the Byard and Dolphy lineup was too good to miss and this is great intro to them)
  11. My last batch of concord ojc stuff before they go to album pricing: Sonny Rollins - Work Time [RVG Remaster] Miles Davis And Milt Jackson Quintet- Sextet Teddy Charles - Coolin Gene Ammons - Funky, The Happy Blues
  12. If you not going to buy a Mono or Stereo box and want to pick up just a few of the individual stereo remasters based on the biggest improvement over the original 87 disc's my fab four picks would be: Beatles For Sale Revolver White Album Abbey Road Peppers is also has its amazing parts. Its just more of a cohesive sounding record in mono. Speaking of the mono's I will be digging more into a friends mono box this weekend so I will report back on the mono's later.
  13. I really wanted to go to that but couldn't. Did you enjoy it? I will buy the book this weekend. Always avoided that album, still no desire to try it.
  14. Jamalca by Ahmad Jamal. Not that Ahmad plays bad on it but he can't overcome the cheesy strings and anonymous backup singers. Now when I am in the mood I love some good blaxploitation-tinged strings (like the Richard Evans Cadet sides) if the funk is there but this record is just pure sell out crossover velveta.
  15. I was in Amoeba Records SF yesterday and there were plenty of used copies of the individual stereo remasters going for 10-11 bucks. I knew it would be a matter of weeks before these would start showing up due to the i-pod generation just ripping them and trading them in. Yes the stereo White Album remaster is wonderful. Even the Mono Beatles or bust folks over at the Hoffman forums are gaga over the stereo remaster of the White Album. I am curious to hear the mono of though as folks are saying the White Album has a more lo-fi indie rock feel to it in mono. I am still in love with the Stereo remaster of Beatles For Sale, I played No Reply, Im A Loser, Every Little Thing She Does and What Your Doing everyday this week. Pure pop bliss.
  16. Give "A Tribute to Someone" off My Point Of View another spin. He does sound almost exactly like Bill Evans on it, which was his intention.
  17. I will watch but with the volume on the TV off. The combination of that god damn Blackberry Beatles abomination getting played 18 times and Tim "captain f-ing obvious" McCarver butchering the english language will make me postal. For the Phillies they need Cole Hammels to be Cole Hammels of 08 not 09. For some reason I still like them in this series.
  18. Yeah, the rest of us geniuses paid full price for the 16 CD set 20 twenty years ago and then full price again for the first two sets in this series before finally catching a break on Side Steps. So don't feel bad. And you're right, it's marvelous music! I would have gladly paid full price for the amount of joy I am getting out of this box. Plus its also re-opened my love affair with 50's Prestige titles. I have been getting into a other tiles by Ammons, Waldron and Rollins that I haven't played in a long time. I detoured into Miles via Blue Moods and Bags Groove and am now really getting into some Milt Jackson and Teddy Charles. Great stuff !
  19. I tried but all metaphysical inquires are getting routed to Seth.
  20. I wasn't going to get it because its considered one of their lesser albums but I picked up the Stereo version of Beatles For Sale and I am in love. Its pure audio candy. Something about the use of the four track and that they were still playing songs that were finished with a live in studio feel just makes this sound so warm. When Lennon sings: "And so its true pride comes before a fall Im telling you so that you wont lose all" on I'm A Loser it really does sound like he is signing right at you and the Bealtes are playing in your living room. I think of in terms of the biggest improvement sound wise over the 87 CD's this one is a great example. This is the most I have enjoyed this album in 30 years since I was a little kid.
  21. DP5 is my favorite Brent recording, disc 2 is stellar, the new road trips sounds like a good one. Thanks for the comments on the JGB stuff.
