  1. By chance, I just finished reading that part of the book. There are some interesting quotes from Griffin to the effect that he had very mixed feelings about playing with Monk. In particular, he appeared to find playing Monk's tunes with Monk to be rather restrictive for the development of solos. Thanks, I am only at the part where he just recorded his first record with Prestige. No surprise in regards to Griffin's thoughts on playing with Monk. The book is incredibly detailed, like Six String below I don't want it to end either.
  2. You will be very happy with both the Monk book and Side Steps, I know I am.
  3. Indeed. Off topic I know but any love for Caravanserai? I picked it up yesterday, the guy at my local record store said "for most people the first three are the way to go but based on your tastes try Caravanserai". Back to the Beatles. The Mono of Rubber Soul is perfection.
  4. There's No Business Like Show Business - Sonny Rollins - Worktime. Been on a 50's Prestige kick all year.
  5. Out of all the mp3's, CD's and vinyl I bought this year I seem to be enjoying the vinyl the most. Maybe because I upgraded my speakers and turntable last year or that I have to actually sit and pay attention with the vinyl when its on. All of the OJC's and Rhino 180 grm on vinyl I picked up this year sound fantastic to my ears.
  6. Reading the reviews of the new Road Trips from Dec 79 on dead.net I was wondering if anybody here got their copy. Seems to be a lot of issues delivery, charged credit cards and customer service on this one. I bought the new Jerry Let It Rock from my local shop and its lovely but it doesn't seem to be one I will go back to a lot. I think I kind of miss the energy from 68 now after hearing the Jan/Feb 68 RT from earlier this year.
  7. Currently enjoying and sometimes cursing Revolution in the Head. I loved the introduction and the writing on Tomorrow Never Knows alone makes it worth picking up but sometimes I feel he goes a little to far with his opinions and bashing tunes that are well loved by many. Compelling read though. The individual Stereo's and Mono Box are all fantastic. I don't think a day has gone by since 9-9-09 where I haven't played at least 2 minutes of Beatles music.
  8. Thanks for the reply Hot Ptah. I just started the book this week and just got to where Monk just got the gig at Mintons. I had no idea Monk traveled the south with a Pentecostal Preacher before that. Great read so far.
  9. Looks awesome on Safari and Firefox on Leopard 10.5.8.
  10. C., That MMW Radiloarians series is some of their best work IMO. III is my favorite and then reverse. Big new box set coming this week as well. Saw them a few weeks back and they were unstoppable! While I don't have III yet (I need to get it soon) I will say Radiloarians II is the best album MMW ever made and its the album I kind of always wanted them to make. I think what makes it so great is that before they went into the studio to cut these tracks they toured with them for a year so they had the optimal arraignments and familiarity with them for the improvisations as opposed to the normal way of recording a brand new song for a album and they having the tracks develop into something better later on tour.
  11. Thanks for that, it makes me mental when people say he was just a mellow pianist. Great thread everybody, spent the last two days reading parts of the Pettinger's biography of Evans again while spinning Live at Shelly's Mann Hole, Half Moon Bay and We Will Meet Again. Printed out Larry's book excerpt for the bus ride home tonight. I love this place.
  12. My Top 10 for the year: Diego Barber - Calima Medeski, Martin and Wood - Radiolarians II Jon Hassell - Last Night the Moon Came Dropping Its Clothes in the Street Stefano Bollani - Stone in the Water Alex Cline - Continuation John Surman - Brewster's Rooster Monterey Quartet - Live at the 2007 Monterey Jazz Festival Enrico Rava - New York Days Keith Jarret - Yesterdays Joe Lovano Us Five - Folk Art Re-Issue: Kind Of Blue (Sony Legacy two disc edition with Miles 58 sessions)
  13. Also Aquarius Records on Valencia. Lotsa food, drink and entertainment on that street, too. It's kind of like San Francisco's "East Village". 2nd that, the Mission is so colorful. Tons of great drink and food in addition to having some of the best weather in the city. Though it may be closer to Brooklyn based on the the high Hipster w/Beard population in the area.
  14. So much to do… SF – You can walk along the Embarcadero, wharfs and Giants ballpark and hit the farmers market and the Slanted Door to eat. From there you can take a ferry out to Sausalito and walk along the boats and some of best views in the bay area. To eat in Sausalito I recommend Fish and Sushi Ran (imo the best restaurant in all of Marin) . Also in downtown SF you can go the Modern Art Museum. You can also look up historic walking tours of downtown SF. Also in SF is Yoshi’s Jazz Club in the Fillmore district. In the upper Haight Amoeba records is worth a visit. From Amoeba you walk through Golden Gate Park (pretend its the summer of love) to the new Academy of Sciences and or the Asian Art Museum across from it. If you like beer the Tornado in the lower Haight is a must visit. The Marina and Chrissy Field is a fun walk, you can also visit the Exploratorium and the Palace of Fine Arts. North Beach is always worth a afternoon visit. If you decide to drive north to Marin and its sunny stop and walk on the Golden Gate bridge, its worth it. From the there you can take the next exit to Sausilto or keep going to Marin and the Mill Valley – Muir Woods exit. I also recommend Muir Beach down the road a bit by car (five minutes). At the turn off for Muir Beach you can stop off at the Pelican BnB for a nice English ale. Weather and energy permitting from the Muir Beach parking lot take a brief walk up the coastal trail or for something mellower there is green gulch zen center. I live in Mill Valley and downtown Mill Valley is quite charming even though its been taken over by yuppie pod people, but it’s a nice place to visit. Sadly the landmark Village Music in downtown Mill Valley is no longer but Gary who use to work there took most of the Jazz Vinyl with him to Mill Valley Music, he is good guy who can use the support. Send me a pm if you wish if you come out towards Marin. A visit to Berkeley and the campus and Telegraph is also very much worth your time.
  15. I don't know if he has fallen but for me after I finally heard the second side of Ring everything else just seems ok in comparison. The following run of Burton mid 70's ECM's are all great. The New Quartet Ring Dreams So Real Passengers I guess my top ten ECM would be the following: Keith Jarrett – Changeless Gary Burton – Ring John Abercrombie – Timeless Ralph Towner – Batik Gateway – II Jan Garbarek - Witchi-Tai-To Steve Tibbetts - Safe Journey Kenny Wheeler – Gnu High Terje Rypodol - Odyssey Collin Walcott – Cloud Dance
  16. ^ He deserved it, there were several games this year where he was more dominant than last year. Congrats to Timmy!
  17. I am buying the book this weekend. Does it explain or does anybody else have info on his relationship with Johnny Griffin or why the Quartet with Griffin, Haynes and Abdul-Malik was so short lived. Artistic differences/other commitments.
  18. Because shelf space is so limited for me I love the Touchstone packaging. I can't think of any ECM release where I think that it desperately needs a remaster. Anybody?
  19. Mojo has a news item on it but doesn't say anything about dates. http://www.mojo4music.com/blog/2009/11/bea...ers_on_the.html The Hoffman Bots over at their forum are saying likely next spring, from digital masters and no mono.
  20. Thanks for the heads up, a lot of these I have never even heard of or have been looking forward to tracking down for a long time like the Goodrick and Waldron.
  21. "ecause frankly, no doctor advised me that this might happen after my surgery and so how was I to know what was happening " I hear this kind of stuff all the time, the only way to survive is to do your own self diagnosis and and ask a ton of questions. Like Joe said try keep a positive attitude and get well soon.

    Bob Dylan corner

New Morning, John Wesley Harding and Love and Theft. Don't bother with Dylan and the Dead.
  23. I agree, the Phillies are loaded, not sure if any big names will be leaving but they are the team to beat going into next year at least in the NL. Congrats to the Yankees. Gotta say seeing Texiria with ski goggles in locker room celebration was very-very weak. Dude, you just won the WS get some damn champagne and beer in yours eyes and enjoy the sting, its not like you have to hit tomorrow.
