  1. Last night my friend had free tickets to see Omara Portuondo. She had great energy and her band especially Harold Lopez Nussa on Piano and Felipe Cabrera on Double Bass were incredible. A nice evening of Cuban Jazz.
  2. Streaming it now, wow, wasn't what I was expecting at all but I am digging it.
  3. Yes!, I second this recommendation given your "folkish" leanings as it's an acoustic set. Excellent sound and vocally Jerry & Bob sound really good (which wasn't always a strong suit.) WorldB3's recommendation of Dick's Pick 8 is also excellent given your preferences, but I just wanted to emphasize Reckoning as it sometimes is overlooked as it was recorded in 1980, and someone who likes the sound of (roughly) 1970 might not think to go there. Its worth it just for the version of Cassidy alone. I also love Bird Song and Ripple (its funny when Bobby's dog runs on stage and Jerry says "That's Otis" in the middle of Ripple). I had the vinyl for years and just finally got around to picking up the 2 disc CD remaster with Bonus tracks. Well worth it.
  4. Welcome, those are all great records. From there I would recommend Dick's Picks 8 - Harpur's College. The sound isn't the best but its from 1970 and the first disc contains one of their acoustic opening sets. Great stage banter also, nice little insight into the band. The 2nd and 3rd discs contains the only version of Dancing In The Street I like, one of those Dead songs where it starts off really bad and sounds like its going to go off the rails and then Jerry locks everybody in with his first solo and it takes off from there. You also get a great Dark Star. Another good live acoustic one is Reckoning which is from 1980.
  5. I have the CD of Shepik's Human Activity Suite and enjoy it quite a bit, well worth the download. I was reading on their message boards that the Concord titles are getting bit rate upgrades now but they will go to album pricing format "not at this time but soon" whatever that means. If you have been sitting on any old 4-5 track Prestige or Riverside titles in your saved for later list I would grab as many as you can on your next refresh.
  6. wp: Miles Davis (w/Mingus) - Blue Moods np: Bird, Diz, Bud, Roach and Mingus - Jazz At Massey Hall
  7. Moving Finger - Dorothy Ashby - The Rubaiyat of Dorothy Ashby. Funky beats and phat vibes, strings, killer jazz harp solo's and fuzz guitar!! I love this! With all the hipsters, dj's and hip hoppers in the bay area its so hard to find old Richard Evan's produced Cadet stuff on vinyl, this was a major score.
  8. XO is a great album, haven't listened to it years but I use to love it.
  9. Completely agree. As for the albums afterwards, all bets are off. I think McCartney, Ram, Red Rose Speedway, Band On The Run and McCartney II all have enough good tracks on them to be worth while if your a McCartney fan. His singles like Maybe Im Amazed, Another Day, Mess Im In etc.. I think are great. The new Fireman album he did last year titled Electric Arguments is actually very enjoyable. It was a what the heck download on emusic and to my surprise it damn good. A good return to the early 70's rockin stuff which was not expected and the last Fireman releases were electronica. I agree with Bev though that the best post Beatles record, Beatle inspired stuff was by XTC. Skylarking is a masterpiece. Some of the Flaming Groovies stuff is also quite fun.

Your correct I didn't see you post above. More of a John Wesley Harding sound though. The NY sessions can be found on the "internets" for those interested.

Have you ever heard the early acoustic sessions of Blood on the Tracks bootleg titled - Blood on the Tapes? Well worth searching out. I actually prefer it to the official version. A couple of these made it on the Biograph box set.
  12. Maybe not a salary cap but something more like revenue sharing similar to the NFL. The Yankees should benefit from their location and the prices they can charge for luxury boxes. The Red Sox should benefit that their fans sell out the entire season before opening day. BUT its not fair that the Yankees and the Red Sox get 200 to 300 million in cable and TV revenue where the Royals, Mariners, Pirates etc get a 10th of that. If the Yankees or Red Sox played 162 inter-squad games on TV they wouldn't be getting the same cable revenue so it makes sense that the other teams get some of that.
  13. 3 inches of rain for most, up to 9 down in the Santa Cruz mountains. Now you would think with the first major storm of the year and with the roads being oily people would slow down, not tailgate, not weave in and out of traffic on the freeway but no, 100's of traffic accidents today.
  14. Less blase them me, I just picked up Tabula Rasa. WOW, I love it! Would Alinea be a good one to follow up with?
  15. Hey Texas had their chance this year with the way the Angels played coming out of the gate, they didn't even break 500 till almost June I think. Good year for the Rangers, I think everybody in the AL West will be better next year.
  16. Try the new version of "Abbey Road", I think you will be pleasently suprised. I purchased "Abbey Road", "The Beatles", "Revolver" and "Past Masters", and they are all a great improvement over the original 1987 CD's. Id love to hear "A Hard Day's Night", "Revolver" and "Seargent Pepper" in mono, but I'll be damned if I'm going to spend over $200 to get three CD's I want, and 11 that I don't. Well it's less than eleven, but I know what you mean. I would not be at all surprised if mono editions are released separately in the next year or three. I would say that the new stereo versions of "The Beatles" and "Let It Be" are also excellent and should tell you right away what care went into ths mastering and restoration in this series. The mono vinyl will be coming out mid November if you don't mind paying around 20-25 dollars for one record. For a mono version of Peppers I think it will be worth it. The stereo remasters of the White Album and Abbey Road blew me away. Help, RS, Revolver and MMT are huge improvements over the original Stereo CD releases but I am really curious to hear the mono versions now. I wish I waited on MMT as I think the Mono of it probably sounds a lot better.
  17. It was on some blogs this past spring, a friend sent me a pdf of it. I thought for sure it had been top posted here before and with three or four responses along the lines of I was there in the room with Monk when he wrote it and Steve showed me that at the club that night he played a gig with Monk. Definitely worth a top post.
  18. Thanks Berigan, I will look for that Gammons article. Speaking of ex A's that was the Houston Street I remembered in the big games. Great kid and all, he bounced back from the 06 playoffs and he will come back from tonight but its becoming a habit for him. Phillies - Dodgers will be a good one, two great line ups. Pitching will decide it.
  19. There was a stretch in the playoffs back in 88-89 where I thought Joe Montana was the best QB ever but Peyton Manning is 10x better. He is just scary unstoppable this year, 329 passing yards per game. Must see TV every time he walks on the field.
  20. I wasn't going to buy any music yesterday but I ran into the owner of my local vinyl shop while walking my dog and he pulled me in and I am a sucker. Picked up some good vinyl though. The Rubaiyat of Dorothy Ashby - Dorothy Ashby The New Tango - Astor Piazzolla with Gary Burton Tabula Rasa (ECM) - Arvo Part
  21. Where's Dan? Hopefully writing to Red Sox ownership and management to thank them for best decade of baseball of his life with six post season appearances and two world championships. Everybody should be as lucky as Red Sox fans. Congrats to the Angels, what a year for them. from the Andehart tragedy to them being 500 at the end of May, starting rotation in taters for most of the year, Vlad and Tori both with long stints on the DL and they overcame it all. Mike Scioscia = the best manager in all of baseball. Also congrats to the Yankees and the transformation of A-Rod. I know everybody hates the guy but after the injury and roids controversy he came back, kept his mouth shut and was a team player all season. To come up big in the post season with all of the baggage he carried going in deserves some props imo.
  22. Its proably been posted before but it seems appropriate. Monk's notes to Steve Lacy from his notebook. You got to dig it to dig it, you dig?
