  1. As said above 90% of everything is and was crap, now its just harder for the good stuff to rise to the top. What wrong with Rock? I think there is certain lack of risk takers, as mentioned above the majors are not going to hold onto a artist that doesn’t sell. If 14-18 year old males spend the most disposable income on music then the stuff they like is what will get marketed the most. I think around 24 for most is when you start to move away from musical crushes you had when you were a kid and are able to develop a wider range of taste. Even when catering to older rock audiences the majors will more likely come with something manufactured like Velvet Revolver. As much as I support indie rock I think it is suffering from a kind of safeness and corporate branding and exploitation, kind of like Safeway saying its sells Free Trade Coffee or organic foods, its just another corporation looking at market share. While its great that an indie band that is worth hearing can get some exposure and paid with a song being on the “OC” or in a commercial it sucks when you have a million copy cat bands that want to sound like Modest Mouse that wasn’t a good band to begin with but was successful. There is also the good and the bad of Pro Tools. What’s right? Bands and artists are having more control over their art by not being beholden to majors. If you look for the good stuff you will be rewarded. There are lots of creative and intelligent songwriters out right now. Spoon and Wilco continue to be consistent and put out excellent and forward thinking recordings. The last records by Neko Case (Fox Confessor..) and Iron and Wine (Sheppard’s Dog) stand up with the best records of the 60’s and 70’s. Then there is the Radiohead phenomenon where they bypassed record company completely and made millions by offering people to pay pennies for it to download it and sold it to them again when the official release came out on Vinyl and CD. Again its not all bad you just have to look a little harder.
  2. O yeah - it's the best of the three by a mile - and for me, even superior to the 73 Winterland box. Great sound. wow, I don't know. I was just listening to 11-9 for the first time this weekend and it sounds so sweet. Keith is just a monster on that show. I need to plan a "Staycation" this summer and just immerse myself in the Winterland Box and the 71 Road Trips. Couldn't be happier with both of these so far.
  3. Great city one of my favorite places to visit during the summer and fall. Highly recommend "Bud's Jazz Records" in Pioneer Square. Also close to the famous Elliott Bay Book Company book store. 102 South Jackson Street Seattle WA 98104 While more of a indie rock store it does have a decent selection of Jazz is Sonic Boom (can't go wrong with a store named after a Lee Morgan record). Its in a great neighborhood that more people should explore in the Ballard District. 2209 NW Market St I have yet to go to Jive Time Records but I have heard good things about it. 3506 Fremont Ave N Seattle, WA 98103
  4. Freedom Suite - Sonny Rollins April The 14th - Gillian Welch
  5. My live entry to the Dead was from '71 with Skull & Roses. But once I started collecting I grew to prefer almost every year from '69-'78 to '71. Part of it is the way they stretched stuff out by the next year (such as Playin'). I do hold the April Fillmore shows in high regard though, and 8-6-71 is a favorite show, and DP 2 is excellent & underrated. Oh there are other dates too, but given my druthers I'd pick some other year. Roadtrips 3 brings a new appreciation for what they were doing then. Once again the sound is terrific and I love where Phil is in the mix! And for heaven's sake, if one doesn't have the 8-6-71 "Hard To Handle" you must buy this soon to get the bonus disc. One of thee finest things ever (and I'm not Pigpen's #1 fan either.) So yes, I like this one a lot! I like what they're doing in this series (at least the past 2), from song choices & editing & soundwise as well. Look forward to the next one! I agree, after listening to this I have a new appreciation for 71. The energy level and playing by everybody on this new road trips is something. Phil, Billy and Jerry are amazing through out. For those who thought 71 didn't have any jams really needs to hear this. There is certain something, a "blackness" (not really coming up with the right word) and energy in the way they played Blues and RnB tunes with Pig as opposed to after he left. As much as I love 77 as it was my gateway to the Dead (hell throw a dart at May 77 if your looking for a good show) I now hear it in a different way, while something was gained something was also lost. Hearing the slow versions of FOTD or St Stephen makes me appreciate the raw energy of 70-71 all the more. You can hear as a band they are just more into it.
  6. They could score, but it would be all perimeter shooting. Boring. The NBA is all about getting the inside game working. You sell posters of slam dunks. You don't sell posters of outside shooting. I doubt it, its all bout getting face time, if you can dunk over someone you get an even bigger poster. Think John Starks and Barron Davis playoff dunks. Yes, but if the big man camps out under the basket and has better position, you would see far fewer of these dunks. Of course there would still be some. If the coach puts two big men in there clogging up the lane, you aren't going to have any dunks, just a bunch of trips to the foul line. We will have to agree to disagree but I think its boring when you have uncontested dunks. Anybody can dunk when your guy clears out of the lane to not get called the for the 3 second rule. It was even worse back before they allowed zones. I couldn't stand the isolation game that was so popular during Jordan's time when you had a guy hold on to his dribble for 15 sseconds and wait for everybody to clear out. If you can make your shots people will have to come out from under the basket to defend you. Then again maybe I spent too many years watching Nellie ball and the point forward.
  7. Jackie Green is local bay area guy, pretty good song writer too. I think my first dead show I went to in the 80's I wore a preppy Izod t-shirt but nobody gave me a hard time, I guess they thought I was just a Bobby fan. Has anybody else heard the Road Trips # 3 yet. I think its the best one so far.

  9. I was thinking this the other day. Celtics were fairly lucky to cling to their Game 2 victory. Lose that one and the whole tenor of the series changes. No it was planned. The Celtics are lucky that they are big market team and Stern told the refs to make sure the series goes at least six games as the last the 3 finals have been dogs and have had low ratings. I am not saying the Celtics probably weren't the better team (I can't say for sure as I stopped watching after game two) but there is no way if you have an ounce of objectivity that you can't see that game 2 was fixed, and this is coming from a life long Laker hater. To go with the allegations from the 02 playoffs with the Lakers and Kings I am done with the NBA if I can't be sure that the games aren't fixed or scripted. I might as well watch professional wrestling. Stern needs to step down, it took him years to allow a zone defense, he still has the stupid 3 second rule (you seriously can't tell me the best athletes in the world couldn't score points by changing this rule, hell if the other coach wants to put 3 statues under the basket let him), the 11th through 16th best teams record wise didn't make the playoffs this year because they were in the West and last year didn't Stern force the players to play with plastic basketballs? Next year look for Nascar advertising on the shorts. Great game but it needs real leadership and some common sense as opposed to just being about the money.
  10. I just picked up the Trumpet player Avishai Cohen's After The Big Rain and he is bad ass. I bought it on recommendations from friends and its well worth it. It also has Lionel Loueke on it who is kind of blowing up right now playing with Herbie Hancock. The bass player is freaking awesome. Make sure to check out his work with Chick Corea (especially his bass playing on Fingerprints on Past and Future Presents) and last couple trio records under his own name. There was an interesting read in the May issue Jazz Times on the Cohen's and the Israeli Jazz Wave in NY.
  11. Picked up yesterday, both are excellent!
  12. While the Yanks are having their issues the entire NL West is in free fall. A year after 3 teams made the post season and two from the West were in the NLCS the D-Backs just went 17-24 in May-June and GAINED a half game in the standings on the 2nd place Dodgers. Despite that I still bet Torre is happier here on the left coast.
  13. Good question, while his stock his high right now, I doubt that other GM's would offer enough compensational talent back for how good he is due to past injuries. I would roll the dice and keep him as the upside is so high. If they decide to get rid of a starter I would rather see Blanton go.
  14. As an A's fan I appreciate the effort. Anything to bring the Halo's down to earth even a little bit helps. However the reality is unless the A's go on a 15-20 game win streak and play 700 ball in the next six weeks its over as they only have 20 home games left in the entire season after July 31st. I have to remind myself that this year was about the kids in the Haren and Swisher trades (both are looking like steals so far!) getting experience, rebuilding for next year and anything close to 500 ball would be a nice surprise.
  15. I didn't care for the record much but with T.Bone and Buddy Miller in the band I wouldn't mind going to see it.
  16. I would say these three deserve to be on the essentials list. Kenny Wheeler--Gnu High Charles Mingus--Tijuana Moods Yusef Lateef--Eastern Sounds Argument could be made for these as well. Booker Ervin--The Space Book Lee Konitz with Warne Marsh Rahsaan Roland Kirk--Bright Moments Pat Metheny--80/81 William Parker--O'Neal's Porch The rest I agree or haven't heard.
  17. I love Duchscherer. Great game last night. I am loving the Gonzalez kid in CF, 8 of his 11 hits since he was call up two weeks ago have been doubles, the ball jumps off his bat. Interesting article today in the local rag about how the Yankees seem to be waiting for something good to happen and look like they don't have a plan. A lot of the position players are questioning the move to put Joba in the rotation as the Yanks are known for having a strong bullpen. To keep it musical related the writers (one of the best) father user to arrange charts for Frank Sinatra. http://www.sfgate.com/cgi-bin/article.cgi?.../SPRS117GE4.DTL
  18. Let me be absolutely clear: NO FUCKING WAY!!! Its not going to happen, Texas gave away their best pitching prospect to get Hamilton from the Reds last year. They even had scouts go to Hamilton's AA meetings and speeches he gave to people in recovery just to make sure it was the right decision. He is the best thing to happen to Texas in a decade or more. The guy is the real life "Natural" and a great story. A GM's dream on the field and off. Unlike in the natty the players on Texas don't care about the extra attention he gets and look out for him.
  19. After reading how MoFi handled the remaster on this in the last issue of Jazz Times I thought I would give it a try.
  20. No shame in losing to the Halo's on the road. Even though its early I think the world series goes through Anaheim and Boston. They aren't hitting right now but they have great pitching, good d and are fast on the bases. Not sold enough on the White Sox yet to see them as a major force in the post season.
  21. I actually enjoy that one better than Face to Face. Maybe because it was one of the first records I bought with Grant Green on it when I was becoming obsessed with him. Both are excellent and the new RVG of Face to Face sounds great.
  22. My copy of Road Trips #3 arrived yesterday. Only got through disc 1, its still a bit odd hearing the Dead as just a quartet or with Pig and no keyboards. Raw and energetic with Phil and Billy leading the way. If your a Phil fan you will love this. Interesting if somewhat abrupt transition to Bird Song from Dark Star, you can hear the onstage dialog of the band members during the transition.
  23. for those interested there is a 5 FREE track RVG sampler http://www.emusic.com/album/Various-Artist...d/11226316.html recent downloads.
  24. Just grabbed it (192kbps) off of emusic. Excellent. Thanks!! http://www.emusic.com/album/John-Patton-So...d/11225496.html
  25. At least for the next three days Dan, Paps and myself can all agree on Go A's, Yankees Suck. Though the A's might be battling the Rays for the wild card so maybe Paps should be rooting for the Yankees? Paps, if the A's fall out of the race can I join the Rays bandwagon? Fun bunch to watch.
