Recent Down Loads And Additions From E - Music
WorldB3 replied to Soulstation1's topic in Miscellaneous Music
more of the recent Black Saint/ Soul Note goodness: George Adams with Don Pullen Quartet - Live at the Village Vanguard Vol 1 @ Vol 2. George Lewis - Homage To Charlie Parker Billy Harper - In Europe (great!, Fred Hersch?? no way!) Andrew Hill - Strange Serenade (amazing!!, if you love Andrew Hill highly recommend!) Walt Dickerson - Life Rays The Herbie Nichols Project - Love Is Proximity (good stuff) other Charlie Hunter - Baboon Strength (nice organ trio set, the 2nd half smokes!) The Fireman (Paul McCartney) - Electric Arguments (surprising really really good, a mix of everything, his most creative album since his first solo record) Buddy Miller - The Best Of The Hightone Years (at least the tracks I didn't have off his last record for Hightone, he is kind of the Alt Country version of Richard Thompson, sure he is known but should be a household name, great comp, for the Richard Thompson heads at least download the cover of Keep Your Distance) -
if memory serves didn't Plaxico in his rookie year with the Steelers make a big catch downfield late in a close game and proceeded to spike the ball to show off before he was touched which resulted in a fumble? Jackass, btw, there are laws about carring loaded guns in public for a reason. oh, can the NFL adopt the rule that they have in Primeire League Soccer league where the really bad teams get demoted to a developmental league? My cable company should send me a five dollar refund for having the Raiders on prime time tonight. Sorry Noj but they are a disgrace, how the hell did Denver lose to them?

Rip, Rig, & Panic"/Please Don't you Cry Now, Beautiful Edith and Kirk's Work. Bright Moments has some great playing on it as well, the opening track is a classic. Conn, thanks for reminding me about the Jaki Byard Experience. I will grab that one this week off emusic.

Christmas Music Worth Listening To
WorldB3 replied to Teasing the Korean's topic in Miscellaneous Music
Yes, that John Taylor is lovely. Another record this year for the short list of best of 08. That document records comp looks great, I am going to head over to emusic and see if they still have it. -
Ok #8 is the track Riot written by Herbie Hancock. But its not Herbie playing on this track, great version though.
-
Aretha Franklin - This Girl's in Love with You Herbie Hancock - Maiden Voyage

Totally humbling experience but a very enjoyable one, a couple quick stabs at a few I might know, just after one listen. Thank you for the discs. #3. I should own this, damn it, not Art Pepper. Lee Konitz? #8 Cover of Miles Davis Sorcerer, definitely not the Miles quintet. Maybe a live recording, Joe Henderson Milestone era? #10 – Due to the commercial sound and vocal scatting I will say it’s off the Miles From India. #11. That’s definitely the Gabor Szabo signature riff, might be from one of his later commercial CTI projects or just a session he sat in on. #13. Sounds like that John Abercrombie mid-early 80’s period. Trio M or the other album he did with Jan Hammer.

I have always liked Jason Moran's playing but not his records. I think this record will be his coming out party for a lot of folks who have never heard of him before. Like Jarrett on Forest Flower - Live In Monterey.
-
Excellent choice! Great pick. Mine: Sandino - Geri Allen, Charlie Haden & Paul Motian - Etudes. The Black Saint/Soul Note drop on emusic has been such a blessing. I had no idea how much great music was on those labels.

It's a big crazy state Oregon - something for just about everyone. I hear ya! I spent a few weeks out there about 5 years ago, and fell in love with the place, particularly the Eugene area. Its been my goal to move out there ever since, and Im hoping to make that come true in the next year. Eugene eh? Yes, I rather like it too. Came here 22 years (from IL, though a different stop on the CB&Q than you) ago for grad school and decided to stick around. Tough place to find employment - having an in at the university or a government agency helps as they seem to be the only ones who don't lay people off. But what you don't get in $ is more than made up for in surroundings. Er, not architectural (this is one ugly town buildingwise), but rather in natural beauty in the area. Feel free to contact me if you need hints about neighborhoods etc., where to buy CDs, and so on when you dream gets closer. I am debating such a move to Eugene or Portland myself. I will probably send you a PM to get more insight on things.

How could 7,195,000 people be wrong? and people wonder what's wrong with the music industry.

Thanks, I love Tony Allen. I will also check out the Burnt Sugar. A coupe artists I think some people on here would dig are Will Benard and Jeremy Pelt. Will Benard has a new one out with John Medeski and Stanton Moore. Kind of a thinking man's groove band. I saw him a Yoshi's a couple weeks ago and he was fantastic. You click on samples off the discography page http://www.willbernard.com/ For those that like 60's Miles and Wayne Shorter check out Jeremey Pelt - November. He really gets the feel and sound right on it. Free samples here: http://www.peltjazz.com/home.html

Jazz is the philosophers stone of new "indie rock"

Which four more pages than the Best of 2008 Jazz list thread. While the op's writing style is very awkward it does seem strange that on a Jazz Discussion Forum their aren't a lot of people that support new Jazz artists. Seems to be more bashing of anybody that gets any type of positive press/ promotion than support. I know that isn't entirely true but it seems that way here sometimes. -
I know, I was going to just grab a couple titles a month but I am feeling the need to activate an old account and load up on these. Good feature on it here: http://www.emusic.com/features/hub/blacksaint/index.html

Same here, I never heard it but I have been looking for it for some time. I have 7 dl's left for the month, where next with the BS/SN?

One example of this is I had a friend tell me that he didn't like Adam's Apple by Wayne shorter because its opens with a Sidewinder type tune in the title track then a blues, then a ballad and then a re-working of Footprints that he felt was tame compared to the Miles Smiles version, in other words same old Blue Note Formula stuff. I asked did you ever play the second half the record/CD?, he said no and was blown away by the variety on Teru, Chief Crazy Horse and The Collector and how forward thinking the playing was on it. Once you get past the forced Sidewinder type of tune their is tons of great music to explore with the 60's Blue Note's. That said I have gone through periods where I had to take a break from it but when I come back with fresh ears I always enjoy them. As for RVG am the only one who thinks the recording of the piano is always a bit dull or lacking the harmonic range of what it should sound like? It may have been limitations of the recording equipment of the time.

I have a Top 8 so far: Marcin Wasilewski– January Avashi Cohen – Gently Disturbed Jeremy Pelt - November Nik Bartsch – Holon Charles Lloyd – Rabo Du Nube Ben Allison – Little Things Run The World William Parker – Petit Ouseau Marc Copeland – Another Place I need to spend more time with the following, they are all very fine records but I have yet to have the same connection with them as the ones above: Dave Holland – Pass It On Brad Mehldau Trio – Live Cantando - Bobo Stenson Trio Kurt Rosenwinkel – The Remedy The Door - Mathias Eick Roy Hargrove – Ear Food Paul Bley – Nothing To Declare Misha Alperin – Her First Dance (maybe not really Jazz but if you liked the Dino Saluzi from last year with Anja Lechner you will like this)

KENNY GARRETT - Sketches Of MD: Live At The Iridium (Mack Avenue)
WorldB3 replied to JSngry's topic in New Releases
I agree, this record just falls flat after the first song which is incredible and a must hear/download. It's not so much that nothing can match the first track which would be understandable its that the rest of the record just isn't good. If he is trying to do a groove jam thing that his heart is into then he needs to listen the last live Chris Potter. Of course Potter has an exceptional band to pull it off. -
Cod 'n chips twice, please.
WorldB3 replied to The Magnificent Goldberg's topic in Miscellaneous - Non-Political
In SF the Edinburgh Castle will bring you Fish and Chips from a place called Old Chelsea around the corner. Not really healthy or high quality but if your at the Edinburgh it isn't exactly going to be a gym or fine dinning night. Its kind of a tradition thing if your in for a pint in that neighborhood. Usually to see a show at the Great American Music Hall near by which is a great venue. -
Dr. Feelgood (Demo) - Aretha Franklin - Rare & Unreleased Recordings from the Golden Reign of the Queen of Soul. What a force of nature she was and a damn fine piano player to boot. It seriously doesn't get any better. on the Jazz side I have been revisiting Donny McCaslin's In Pursuit and enjoying the heck out of it. The track Madonna has been getting multiple plays this week.
