  1. Seems like the refs were letting the Celtics man handle the Lakers a bit last night. Lots of fouls that didn't get called but as long as it goes both ways its nice to see the intensity and the physical play. Don't think for a second that Stern didn't tell the refs to make sure this goes at least 6 games. Funny moment at my house last night when I said "oh come on" after a missed Laker shot. My wife asked me what was I doing, and said "are you rooting for the Lakers?" . Me a life long Warriors fan who even rooted for the Celtics against the Lakers in the 80's said "um. yeah. I am so sick of Boston sports fans, east vs west I got to go with the west coast team". Wife: "BUT ITS THE LAKERS!" I hate sports..
  2. Somewhere I Belong - Gabot Szabo - 1969. The album itself is a bit lame, while he always did pop covers he would do something interesting with them but on 1969 its kind of a sell out record except for the last track which sounds like it could be by Primal Scream or some DJ like Darren Emerson spinning in Paris or London. No electronics on it but it has this fat groove, great reverb and trippy guitar playing that sounds 35 years ahead of its time. Laughing - David Crosby - If Only I Could Remember My Name. David Crosby harmonizing over great sounding layered 12 string guitars and Jerry Garica laying down some gorgeous Pedal Steel. Heaven.
  3. Good news. Can't beat a 1971 Hard To Handle. Speaking of the Winterland Box I don't know if a moment or a song makes it worth the box set but that Dark Star is one for the ages. I have had the soundboard MP3 of it for years but the remaster is like hearing it brand new. Check out around the 22:00 minute mark when Keith lays down the groove after Phil's bass solo and then the MLB Jam before Eyes. Incredible.
  4. 210 Wins, 154 Saves. HOF?? Considering it was a hitters era I think he gets in.
  5. Went a little crazy with the 35 free and 65 starter pack for 4.99 I picked up at Circuit City. I still have 28 left. Feel free to recommend me something. Jazz/Blues: Marc Copland - Another Place (w/ John Abercrombie) Gabor Szabo - Bacchannal Gabor Szabo -1969 (ok, but Bacchannal is amazing!) Dave Douglas - Moonshine Dizzy Reece - Asia Minor Roland Kirk With Jack McDuff - Kirk's Work (RVG Remaster) Frank Kimbrough - AIR Otis Spann - Otis Spann Is The Blues Other: Blonde Redhead - 23 Old 97's - Wreck Your Life Susan Tedeschi - Austin City Limits: Live From Austin, TX Gillian Welch - Music From The Revelator Collection Keith Hudson - Nuh Skin Up I-Roy - Don't Check Me With No Lightweight Stuff (1972-1975) DJ Cheb I Sabbah - Krishna Lila
  6. If were talking fantasy and music in addition to Mandy Moore I would have to include Shelby Lynne and Neko Case. Add A custom Les Paul, 60's SG, couple nice Gibson ES Archtops, 4 Taylor's one a 12 string. Grand Piano, Vintage Hammond w/ Leslie and Fender Rhodes. All Sixties Tube amps of course. Vox, Orange, Twins.. Island = Mustique
  7. I went to the Saturday show in SF. While I was entertained I thought for the most part it was how the French say “Au chien qui fume (the dog that smokes)”. I thought the KOB stuff for the first set didn’t work. The Sitar wasn’t really made to play blues scales like in So What and All Blues. Blue In Green should have been mind blowing but I found the singer to be over the top for a song that is all about understatement. Blue In Green had some great moments in the middle section of solo’s but it took way to long to get there. Highlights for first set were Ron Carter and Rudresh Mahanthappa’s solos on All Blues. The 2nd set which focused on the electric period worked much better. They locked into some nice grooves and Roney sounded great. Pete Cosy couldn’t make it so Henry Kaiser filled in for him at the last minute and he seemed to not really fit in. The highlight for the second set and the night was Badal Roy’s solo. I will be looking into more of his recorded works. Overall it was cool but nothing I heard really compelled me to go out and get the record.
  8. That and the fact that the general consensus is that the Prestige K2's absolutely smoke the RVG's. fwiw - there is an article in the new Jazz Times the goes into the remastering process for the new Concord releases and why if you already own older versions of them why you should upgrade. I haven't heard the K2's (which they didn't mention) so I can't comment on the sound of those but the the double disc Trane-Monk sessions that just came do sound better then any of the old releases on CD (non K2) or Vinyl. I will be picking up the Hawkins and Adderly because I don't already have them.
  9. Three King Fishers - Gabor Szabo
  10. Seems like its been consistent enough to get Stern his desired final of Lakers vs Celtics.
  11. This definitely looks intriguing. I really dig Rypdal but I am somewhat hesitant to pick this up. The Jazztimes review said think Horowitz playing a solo concerto with Eddie Van Halen on stage with him.
  12. Great game last night in Oakland with Harden going against Halliday. However the game was ruined by stubborn management. You make the call: 1-1 game going into the 9th. As the manager of the A's do you you A. Go with the lefty Chad Guadan who was lights out in the 8th to face two lefties coming up in the 9th who was a starter earlier in the season and can give you some innings in case it goes extra innings or do you B. Go stubbornly with your 8th inning or in this case your set up guy Foulke who is a righty because well he is you set up guy. Of course you you go with B and give off a lead off double to the left handed hitter and lose a tough one 2-1. Hate to be an arm chair manager but sometimes you have to improvise and go on a feel instead of doing the same thing every night.
  13. Not bitching, developing a farm system and keeping the good players and adding bits and pieces via free agency is the way to go. Hell the Giants should pay Theo a couple hundred grand to just give them a clue for a day. I am just pointing out that the Red Sox have a advantage that 90% of the other teams don't have and their is a huge media bias in their favor. Ex: the lead story on ESPN Sunday night was again the Red Sox but about John Lester's no hitter from earlier in the week instead of how a small market team that was expected to lose over 90 games swept them.
  14. The Marlilns draw even less but at least they play outdoors. The Rays are an exciting team but you couldn't pay me to watch a game in their park. I think even with new stadiums I am not sure if they would draw as Football seems to be the #1 sports passion.
  15. Yes the same that had the 2nd highest payroll the 4 seasons before that, the same evil empire that has the 2nd biggest media market in the country behind them and the same evil empire that pays Dice K and Beckett more in salary than some other teams entire payroll. Yes, the same team that has won 2 of our the last 4 world series and had the best record in baseball with a seven game winning streak going into the weekend. The Yankees have developed young talent also but like the Red Sox they can afford to make mistakes on a player here or there due to the high revenue they that get. For the Rays and A's to compete everything has to break the right way. You have a great GM but lets see how good he is with the payroll of the A's. Come on Dan, the Red Sox are anything but a underdog. I don't blame them for reaping the benefits of the location they play in but enough of the poor little Red Sox how will ever compete against the big bad Yankees bull shit. I can't take it. Besides the Yankees will be in free fall mode by the all star break with that pitching staff. Bank on it. Sorry for the rant, btw Pedroia and Ellsbury are two of my favorite younger players in the league and are fun to watch, I hope they have long careers. Hopefully the A's won't get over excited about the weekend and stay focused and not get routed by the Jays. For those of you with MLB TV the Halliday vs Harden matchup in this series will be must see tv.
  16. Bummer, one of the greats. RIP Jimmy.
  17. Hey Dan, what's up??? One hit last night???? We got 7 hits, and 3 runs off of Justin Duchscherer when Oakland came to town!!! Hey now, Duchscherer is good, he was a starter his whole career until he was a rookie in 06 and the A's put him the bullpen where he made the All Star team that year. He had the Rich Harden injury bug last year but I think he is right now where people expected him to be. Chad Guidan who got sent to the pullpen would make a 4th starter on most teams but there is no room for him in this rotation as Smith and Eveland have been pleasant surprises to go along with Blanton and Harden. Nice to see Ryan Sweeney start to turn into the player he was expected to be when he was the #1 prospect of the Wt. Sox. He crushed one against Beckett last night. Its nice to win a few against the new evil empire.
  18. Don't worry Dan, the Red Sox will win the next two because they A's don't win series, in fact they haven't won one since the first week of May (thanks ESPN power rankings). The A's will lose the next two 2-0 and 3-2 but their stats will look good because it will say they are outscoring the opposition based on the lopsided victory last night yet its meaningless because they don't do the little things to win games like base running and catching fly balls in the outfield. Texas is tearing the cover off the ball and they should pass the A's in the standings soon.
  19. Thanks! Just got them. That Miles at Monterey 63 is excellent!
  20. Pretty much the same as it helped me to have hope and inspiration during hard times growing up.
  21. My first look at the Rays last night, nice team. Longoria plays like a vet, he is the real deal. Speaking of 3rd basemen why did the Blue Jays give up on Hinske the ex Oakland A's product who also hit one out. The bay area is finally seeing the correction that was coming where the A's are not even close to being a contender and the Giants are closer to a last place team than a 3rd place team. The up side is I have more time to spend outside, gardening and practicing music and less on baseball. See you all next year.
  22. I bought a booster pack to pick up the new Rosenwinkle.
  23. If you have any interest in piano trios pick this up.
  24. 2nd. I picked it up on Thursday and have already given it a couple spins. I went in to it blind except for some written reviews and have been richly rewarded. Great dynamics and sound for such a young trio. Very impressive.
  25. I pretty much agree with the above. As far as who would buy these recordings I wonder. I much as its important that a lot of these recordings are not forgotten its also seems to make Jazz appear as a museum piece instead of a vibrant and current experience. Why can't we have more current artists on these lists? fwiw, I love the New Yorker, don't have blue hair, don't buy the expensive shit in the ads or go to the opera and know about every single item on that list.
