  1. Good, you have the original edition then! Great session! Now listening to: The Swingville All Stars 'Rockin' In Rhythm' (Swingville red label) with Taft Jordan, Hilton Jefferson, Al Sears, Don Abdney, Wendell Marshall, Gus Johnson! Oh yeah The Slide Hampton session is absolutely FANTASTIC, in fact more than an octet with euphonium and tuba, huge sounding group. You were spot on there ! The Londons are superb sounding LPs. Usually in my experience significantly better than the Atlantic/Jubilee etc. issue equivalents from the US.
  2. Still knocked out by the sound quality of this Ory set. Nice big 3-D sound, better than they normally achieve with the CDs. David - you might want to check ebay for this one. There was an Ory set with a 'buy it now' available last time I looked on there.
  3. I'll keep an eye open ! She definitely has a German accent but probably qualifies as 'British' I guess having been here since about 1989 !
  4. Slide Hampton Octet 'Sister Salvation' (Atlantic mono deep groove). Brownie - yes it does have the Artie Shaw sleeve note !
  5. 'Gerry Mulligan Meets Johnny Hodges' (HMV mono) Oscar Peterson Trio 'Canadiana Suite' (Japanese Mercury) 'Tommy Flanagan Trio Overseas' (Japanese Metronome)
  6. In the past I always cleaned with a fibre brush plus record cleaning cloths. I swear by the VPI 16.5 record cleaning machine with Record Research Lab vinyl wash these days though. Incredible improvements in sound quality can be achieved, particularly with those old Blue Notes, Contemporaries, Prestiges etc.
  7. It sounds excellent - highly recommended. It's in the thinner vinyl, not the Q-LP but doesn't sound any the worse for that.
  8. Jack Wilkins Jack Wilson Don Wilson Hack Wilson Stan Hack Maurice Stans Maurice Chevalier Edith Piaf Sacha Distel
  9. I saw Ingrid Laubrook's Quintet recently and thoroughly enjoyed it. Second the positive comments on 'Forensic' - the tunes from this are worth checking out. First half of the show was a trio showing her Brazilian side. Second half of the show was the quintet. And big kudos to her for enthusiastically touring the UK with this and the F-IRE Collective shows, 100% commitment to getting the music out there.
  10. Alfred Anderson was featured on a BBC TV documentary only very recently and fortunately they interviewed him (and several other British survivors of the WW1 trenches - now down to single figures). With his death we are now within a whisker of losing the last living link to this monumental tragedy. A sobering thought, as for as long as I can remember the 'veterans' were a regular and visible presence in our society.
  11. RIP. I was fortunate to hear him live once and he was an excellent player. Also enjoyed his playing on the Duane Tatro LP that I've been listening to of late.
  12. And the booklet is only VG+
  13. Already up for listening on the BBC is a broadcast of 'The Verb', recorded in the Purcell Room of the RFH last Thursday. A nice 'warm up' hour before the Wilson concert, this features a very nice Norma Winstone vocal in duet with pianist Gareth Williams plus nice playing from Stan Sultzmann and a spoken record review of 'In A Silent Way' by John Walters. The Verb
  14. Good to hear that at least one of the shows was a sellout, Phil. I'm still very saddened though that Gerald didn't get a half-way decent attendance on the Thursday. There's no excuses, either..
  15. Sorry to miss the Kurt Elling - In the end I didn't head back into London, having been exhausted getting back from the Gerald Wilson.
  16. Never heard of him ! where can I buy it?
  17. I'll stick with my King pressing..
  18. The Art Pepper was a recent addition for me and sounds wonderful ! Recommend the Hank Mobley too but its a $$$ hit.. Also another for the Hodges 51-55 set. I just wish they'd done a vinyl on the second Hodges set too.
  19. Kenny Dorham 'Trompeta Toccata' (BN NY USA mono) Neil Ardley/Mike Gibbs/Stan Tracey/Ian Carr et al 'Will Power' (Argo 2LP)
  20. James Hendricks Cass Elliott Tim Rose ← Pete Rose Conrad Black Edmund Blackadder III
  21. Of peripheral interest - this month's Jazz Journal International has a good interview with Leroy Williams in which he mentions gigging in NYC with Big John (and recording 'Accent On The Blues') prior to the steady gigs with Barry Harris.
  22. Yes, I have only heard his version of 'Ride of the Valkyries' once on the car radio but the effect was such that I nearly crashed the car..
  23. They did a short 'spot' on Jools Holland's 'Later' TV show a couple of months back - unfortunately it was a bit on the short side and they seemed a bit 'fazed' by the big occasion. Their spot at the Bath Fest was good though. Leading lights of the band are Pete Wareham and Seb Rochford - all members are also part of the F-IRE Collective. Definite punk influence to the music and its presentation.
  24. More nuggets: Clarke Boland/Stan Getz 'Change of Scenes' (UK Verve stereo) Freddie Roach 'Mo' Greens Please' (BN NY USA mono DG both sides ) Leo Parker ''Let Me Tell You 'Bout It' (BN NY USA mono)
  25. Thank God for that..
