  1. Gerald Wilson Orchestra 'Moment of Truth' (Pacific Jazz DG original) Sun Ra 'Disco 3000' (Art Yard)
  2. Not at HMV London though, where I observed today that the Eldridge Mosaic was £99.99 and the Carmell Jones Select £59.99.. The Teutonic deals brokered by Alfred are better..
  3. Indeed !
  4. That includes the Gerald Wilson, which I've just got back from. More thoughts on that one when I've woken up later today... I'm nackered !
  5. Jimmy Deuchar 'Pub Crawling' (Contemporary mono). US reissue of a great Tempo session.
  6. Well, so far I have to say that there is no one track that I dislike ! Nice selection, Tjobbe.
  7. I swear by young female stylists..
  8. There's brief mention of a visit by Harriott to the Paris Jazz Fair in June 1954 in the recent Harriott biography, 'Fire In His Soul'. He played the Salle Pleyel as part of Tony Kinsey's group. There were attempts to book Harriott at a couple of the clubs in an exchange for Martial Solal but I believe they failed. There's no details of any recordings made - Harriott's next confirmed recording session was for Esquire in Dec 1954. Interestingly, there's mention that Joe was pretty terrified in the aircraft during the short, bumpy flight over to France - he hated flying.
  9. Ian Carr 'EmCee 5 Bebop 61' (Birdland Records) - Early recordings by Mr Carr in a hard-bop 'vein'
  10. Received the disks - thanks, Tjobbe. Scratching my head like fury over this selection ! I think I recognise 1 of them.
  11. I always thought of 'Beaujolais Nouveau' as a marketing gimmick to entice millions of gullible Brits rush up to the wine store once a year to spend way too much on inferior wine that the French won't drink themselves. Has the stuff improved?
  12. Sad news - always really enjoyed his work with Silver. Hope he now rests in peace.
  13. I think the 'Tal Concert Band' is also on there. Other posters report even more savings at Amazon.de for these sets. I can recommend JPC - the 3 sets arrived AOK within the week. Have been listening to the Basie all week and it ROCKS !
  14. Otis Spann Les Spann Muggsy Spanier
  15. Ah - I suspect Tyner might have used the double-barrelled name (he was mumbling into the mike, which didn't help), which added to the uncertainty. In any event this Eric looks to be in his early 50s-ish so would be in the right timeline for Mr Gravatt. A superb technician, in any event.
  16. The original vinyl is a 47W63rd deep groove both sides so it must have come out on or around the 1960 date. As mentoned, I suspect that the 1987 date may refer to first release of 'Another Workout'.
  17. Followed up by Freddie Hubbard 'Hub Tones' (NY USA mono)
  18. Adrian The drummer was Eric Gravatt. Ex Weather Report and an associate of Tyner's from his Milestone days. ← I must need my hearing testing, John. I was sure that Tyner said Harland on the second intro (his voice was very quiet) but on first announcement I only heard the word 'Eric' and thought 'that couldn't possibly be Eric Gravatt, could it?'. In any event, he was spectacular. He's the guy who spent all those years as a prison guard after playing in Weather Report, right?
  19. Only stereo? Just giving an 'airing' to Baby Face Willette 'Stop and Listen' (BN NY USA mono). Not the greatest of sleeves but the vinyl kicks ass.. Clifford - 'MFPs' were about 10s/50p when they came out in the 1960s/70s, by the way. About the cheapest LPs on the market at the time (along with Ronco, K-Tel etc.)
  20. Yes, a friend of mine has a copy and keeps going on about how great it is ( ). Can usually be picked up around the £15 to £20 mark, thankfully. It originally came out I think on the MFP budget label. Their usual 'fare' was Bert Kaempfert, 'Top Of The Pops' cover compilations etc.
  21. Dexter Gordon 'Dexter Calling' (BN Liberty stereo)
  22. Lee Morgan 'Search For The New Land' (BN NY USA mono)
  23. McCoy isn't actually that old - 11th Dec 1938 I think, which would make him 67. I'm in for the 'Gerald' on Thursday night - currently debating on whether or not to go for the Kurt Elling on Friday night. Opinions? The Gerald Wilson was a no-brainer.. Incidentally, I was watching a video of him yesterday back in 1962 when he was still soloing on trumpet. Must be over 40 years since he stopped being featured on this and just stuck to arranging/directing.. clunky - it was Reginald Veal on bass in McCoy's group plus the excellent Eric Harland on drums, I think. I thought the Poole gig was spectacular, one of the best performances I have ever seen from McCoy. Nice group empathy !
  24. My way, when I went back to vinyl...and I ended up with originals I can think only two worst way to bankrupcy: drugs and gambling. ← You forgot to add trophy women !
  25. I would agree. I started with DMMs, descended into Toshiba and Kings and succumbed to the NY USAs. If you have a decent deck set-up there really is nothing to touch them.
