Buying Mosaic Partials
sidewinder replied to Kevin Bresnahan's topic in Mosaic and other box sets...
No, but I need an LP #1 Anyone have one spare? -
Time to forget che and his ilk I think and for us all to get back to discussing jazz and keeping the Board the great place that it is. Let's put it in perspective - on the internet you are bound to get the occasional bout of 'destructive interference' of this type. Life's like that. Its time for all of us to rise above all of this and keep the Board the great place that it is for discussing all things jazz with a most convivial fraternity. That's my two peneth' anyway.

Could be a Liberty-era pressing of this one The Blue Note labelography site says that Liberty-era disks had "BLUE NOTE RECORDS · A DIVISION OF LIBERTY RECORDS, INC" printed on the label. (not "NEW YORK USA") No. There are some LPs pressed in the 'Liberty' era (ie. just after Alfred Lion sold up) which still have the 'NY USA' labels.

It was interesting watching him pack up his horns after the gig. Some musicians would just chuck the whole lot in the cases pronto and rush out. He really took his time - meticulously dismantling the kit and checking it all out. Incredible !

Larry Young 'Unity' (NY USA stereo). Kicks ass !

Cool, AB A good move I think - sadly. -
Just want to put in a plug here for the two Indo-Jazz Fusions CDs put out by John Mayer in the years before he very sadly passed (road accident). They are: 'Inja' (Indo Jazz Fusions 2000 on FMR) 'Shiva Nataraj King of Dance (also FMR) Both of these CDs offer a very nice updating of the classic Harriott/Mayer material, with some contemporary touches. I was very disappointed not to get to see this group locally when they toured the material about 3-4 years ago (they closed admission about 5 minutes before I arrived in a wonderful rural church venue). John Mayer is very sadly missed indeed on the UK scene..

Chewatch JC update Quote: 'Thank you Che and welcome, please make sure to stop by in Speakout the thread Stop By and Say Hello First' Uh oh.......

I like pretty well everything that he did but for me pride of place has to go to the Candid 'Out Front' and the 'Time' quartet (re-issued on Island as 'The Legendary Quartet Album'). Those two are desert island recordings, IMO. I think Booker was right on the cusp of greatness at the time he tragically passed on. His achievements have been asimilated to an extent (Kenny Wheeler comes to mind) but really not given the credit they deserve.

Agree with you about the 'John Jenkins' cover. I have a nice Toshiba of that one. Just spinning the 'Wally Edition' Pete La Roca 'Basra'. Sounds pretty good, he did a nice job on this one. Followed up with Jackie McLean 'Bluesnik' 47W63rd deepgroove side 2 (one of my favourites) and Grant Green 'Gratstand' mono original, with some very nice Yusef Lateef. Then another Wally. Wayne Shorter 'Etcetera'.

Sam is a lovely character. He was kindness personified when I had chance to chat with him several months ago and he signed all of the BN LPs that I brought along that night in a very fine script. I just wish that I had got my act together to ask him some more questions e.g. the background to the Dameron BN session and what it was like in Miles' Band but, of course, words always fail at such moments.

Cool shot ! btw - I didn't realise that 'parenting 3 kids' was yet another activity he fitted in between posts.. -
He gets an amazingly big sound on the 'Progress Report' Jasmine reissue of the Tempo sessions too. Very enjoyable stuff - well worth picking up if you see it.

I've seen this one go for at least $150 in mono, if it has the ear.

Spotted!!! "Wally" versions of Destination Out
sidewinder replied to Parkertown's topic in The Vinyl Frontier
That makes sense, Kevin. The 'Sweet Honey Bee' master was either wrecked or lost - it was mentioned in a thread on the BNBB some years ago. In fact several of the posters at the time found pristine originals of this session that they pondered even opening and playing (was it 'Swinging Swede'?). In general though, the sound of the Wally's is excellent and, as has been mentioned by Parkertown, up there with the Classic Reissues. I gave 'Patterns' a spin last night and it was pretty damn good, to say the least. I want one of those Big John 'Let Em Roll's too -
Could be a Liberty-era pressing of this one

Doing all of the above whilst also posting continuously 24/7 What a guy !

Great session - and I think Rivers fits in just fine, adjusting his style to that of the group. I would agree that 'Unity' is the better session but this one runs it fairly close. I suspect that when it first came out it was a very poor seller for Blue Note - you rarely ever see vinyl of this one. Wonder why that was?

I think $15 is definitely a fair price. Most of mine were around the £10 mark so that would have been about $15 at the going exchange rate. For fans of the vinyl as distinct from CDs, these LPs are a pretty good buy. Many are on heavy vinyl too. -

Also just checked my 'spare' 'Sweet Honey Bee'. I thought it was a Wally but it turns out to be just a Rare Groove.. -

I've just checked my Wallys ( ) and it looks as though I have more than I thought. In addition to the 'Basra' and 'Patterns' (the latter is in mint and was from Hiroshi) I have: Lee Morgan 'The Procrastinator' Art Blakey 'Like Someone In Love' Wayne Shorter 'The All Seeing Eye' (this one signed on the back for me by Wayne) Hank Mobley 'A Slice of the Top' Lou Donaldson 'Sunny Side Up' Hank Mobley 'The Turnaround' Bobby Hutcherson 'Components' All are great ! -
Here's the cover for the 'Russo In London' LP recorded for Lansdowne, Tooter. By the way, there's a rumour that Spotlite may be re-issuing the Kinsey 'Thames Suite' on CD in the forthcoming future (just a rumour, I'm afraid).

Wally Traugot Capitol re-masters, I guess. I have the 'Basra' and 'Patterns' and I agree, they sound great.
