  1. I have the Dauntless vinyl of 'Lawrence of Arabia' and have just splashed out on an original Audio Fidelity vinyl of 'Plays Unity'. Can't wait to heat it. Just love Walt Dickerson's 60s albums (and his 70s Steeplechases too...)
  2. Thanks for the link. A nice little broadcast, just the thing to get me drooling before another day in the office ( ). For anyone thinking of purchasing the Farmer/Golson Mosaic, take care in case you go straight to their site and order the set after hearing the samples. They are magnificent ! (I resisted......for now at least). That 'Dinah' set also sounds most interesting. That's one I've added to the 'future wants' list, never thought it would be my thing but I like what I hear. Kevin Whitehead should be working for Mosaic sales dept.
  3. .....................
  4. Just received my Hill Select set. This one is #072. Have been giving CD1 a repeated hearing, some fascinating music on this collection. Highly recommended !
  5. Last night: Donald Byrd 'Mustang' (NY USA mono) Art Blakey 'Indestructible' (NY USA mono) Currently on the dark side playing the first disk of the Hill Select..
  6. Wasn't 'Barb' a friend of the group, with the 'wizard' being the Prince of Darkness himself? (or so I heard). Both great albums. And a great reminder to me to get these two out of the rack tonight. I've got NY USA original vinyls of both and they sound wonderful - the dynamics of Williams drum work is captured superbly by RVG. Grachan Moncur's 'Some Other Stuff' has something of the same adventurous feel..
  7. Not to forget that Butler is also on the four 'Xanadu at Montreux' LPs.. B-)
  8. I've pre-ordered the set too
  9. The Amy/Bolton was recorded in 1962 (not sure exactly when). It is combined on the video with a broadcast by the Paul Horn Quintet.
  10. No - I don't think these have ever been put out on DVD. They were released back in the 1980s I think on 'Kay Jazz', put out by TCB Releasing Ltd (who were then based in Frome, Somerset UK - I think). I'm not sure if they have anything to do with the 'Swiss' TCB, suspect that these are two entirely separate enterprises. From my recollection, the UK TCB provided a valuable library facility for jazz film rental, including supply to the likes of the BBC.
  11. Al Haig 'Jazz Will O The Wisp' (Xtra)
  12. On the subject of the Jazz Crusaders, there's a great video of a TV recording of some of the 'Freedom Sounds' material put out yonks ago by TCB in a series called called 'Video Jazz'. Recorded in LA in the early 1960s for the series 'Frankly Jazz'. This particular video has about 30 minutes by the Jazz Crusaders and 30 minutes by Gerald Wilson's Orchestra. Priceless ! Tracks include: 'The Young Rabbits' 'After You've Gone' 'Freedom Sound' May Ann McCall on vocals is featured on one number - not the automatic choice of vocalist for this group, I would think... Other releases in this series include Curtis Amy/Dupree Bolton and Stan Kenton.
  13. 'Old Milwaukee' is witch p*ss..
  14. Fuller's. Drank a lot of Fuller's at the Rose in South Ken -- their cask beer is very different -- not as malty -- I wish micro-brewers here would give real English style ale a go here (but they seldom go in that direction). Haven't tried the Pete's Red. I'll have to put it on my list. --eric 'London Pride' is the one. It has to be drunk within booting distance of the Fullers brewery in London though, to be sure that its from a fresh cask. The pub right next to 'Mole Jazz' does a damn good pint of it.. B-)
  15. Some interesting information in the Baker bio by James Gavin on these sessions. They were recorded when Baker was 'under contract' to the sinister Richard Carpenter, who also had Tadd Dameron 'under contract' too at this time. Baker met his match with that guy..
  16. and also checking out the Quaker Oats factory while they are in town I guess? wild...
  17. Mary Lou Williams & Cecil Taylor 'Embraced' 2LP set on Pablo. Another great Northern find !
  18. Up again for this interesting thread. I'm just enjoying a vinyl of Stewart's 'Out on His Own' on the Livia label. Missed it when it first came out back in 1977. Superb album in every respect.
  19. Words fail..
  20. No problem - enjoy ! The mention of the Selmer sax reputedly given as a gift to Ronnie Scott in the article is interesting. I wonder if it is the Selmer that I often saw Ronnie playing at his club, a Mk VI with its lacquer somewhat faded in parts? The sound he got on that instrument was not unlike Mobley's, so perhaps it was the one. Ronnie was also fond of playing 'The More I See You' at gigs so 'Roll Call' must have been up there in his list of favourites.
  21. Yes, I'll second that ! Louis Stewart 'Out on His Own'. Solo guitar recital on the Irish Livia label from 1977. In mint, a bargain at £5 from one of our Northern English outlets.. B-)
