  1. I was listening to the Oxley '4 Pieces For Sextet' on vinyl the other day and quite like it. Derek Bailey isn't my usual 'cup of tea' but in smallish doses it can be quite stimulating.
  2. Dave, must be 'another' sidewinder. I have the Powell Verve but not through ebay..
  3. Is there a secret combination code as well? . Have given up on this one..
  4. The Westbrook is a fine album. Very much of its time I guess but a nice one nevertheless. Strange that Mike Westbrook doesn't want a domestic reissue of this one either.. Was listening to 'Tanglewood' the other day and - yes - its Spedding on there too.
  5. Yep, you've got to admire it. He was no poser either, took this stuff seriously by all accounts. I still chuckle thinking about that TV interview he did with Jules Holland where he spent the whole time doodling on his sketch-pad and evading the questions. Priceless !
  6. Nope, sounds like just 'Its a Blue World' to me...
  7. Agree with you re: Spedding on the Ricotti 'Point of View'. One of my favourite vinyls from that short-lived UK CBS series that also gave us the Oxleys and the Howard Rileys. Spedding used to crop up a lot in the early to mid 70s - I remember seeing his name credited on a David Essex album of all things (no, it was my sister's copy ) so he moved a lot between the jazz and rock worlds. He's also on the Mike Westbrook 'Love Songs'.
  8. Maybe some of the music made by Alice Coltrane on Impulse points to a possible direction he may also have taken?
  9. Indeed. The concensus seems to be that it's possibly Dusko Gojkovich on trumpet at a Kleinschuster session..
  10. And here's another. Concensus seems to be that it's not Art's session.. More on Art Worker
  11. Here's a link to another thread on this one. Quite a saga ! Art Worker
  12. Count Basie 'Complete Roulette Live' box on the LP format. Superlative !
  13. Love his playing on 'Byrd In Hand'. Especially on 'Devil Whip'.
  14. That would make sense. The exhibition was hosted by Balmain Fine Arts, who are based in the NE. Most of the material though, I believe, was provided by Jo Gelbart.
  15. I love the Jacquet Mosaic (I know it gets mixed opinions) so this is a no-brainer !
  16. Thanks, AB ! I'll keep an eye out for it at my usual 'haunts' on the off-chance of finding it. Good to hear the on this one (I've yet to hear an 'Elite' I didn't like - not often you can say that about a reissue series). The most recent one I got was the Johnny Smith (1960s material, very nice) which I picked up for about 6 or 7 pounds second hand. :rsmile:
  17. This is a great Elite CD - good reminder to pull it off the rack and give it a spin. Love the arrangements and I think Cleveland gets just about the best sound out of the bone of any jazz trombonist I can think of. A joy to behold. He was also sporadically active in the LA area until quite recently, I believe.
  18. Great series - up there with Mosaic in terms of shear all-round brilliance. A good way to discover a lot of great artists whose work was fairly new to me (Thigpen a good example). I'm missing a couple - the Jacquet for one. Got hold of the Johnny Smith quite recently and the Tal Mosaic renders the Farlow now surplus to requirements.
  19. Tony Oxley '4 Compositions for Sextet' (UK CBS) Miles Davis 'Amandla' (Warner Brothers)
  20. Good stuff. Whenever I see those words 'Concert Band' on the spine it conjours up images of Tal and the guys in tuxes and bow ties performing in a palm court, sort of Paul-Whitemanish.. :rsmile:
  21. Yes, very Happy Birthday ! :rsmile:
  22. Was in London yesterday, mainly to check out this exhibition over in Cork Street. It featured around 100 drawings and around a dozen canvases, mainly provided for sale by Jo Gelbart. The canvases are Davis/Gelbart collaborations and include the haunting 'Untitled', completed in the last month before Miles' death and with a real sense of forboding to it. The drawings were mainly produced by Davis between 1981 and 1985 and originally owned I believe by his friend Giulia Trojer, who features along with Miles in quite a few of them. Some of the content of the drawings was pretty strong and not suitable for family viewing. Miles didn't hold back ! The exhibition was truly fascinating. Especially on the drawings, Miles had quite a delicate style and he seemed especially fascinated at this stage with the human form and dancers in particular. Some of it is also quite funny. One of the colaborations with Jo Gelbart, in addition to having the word 'love' included on it also manages to sneak in the word 'a**hole' a bit lower down. The BBC showed I short clip of an interview with Gelbart last week and it can be accessed using Real Player via the following link. Access via 'Open More Audio/Video Clips' on the bottom RHS. Then click 'Entertainment' to bring up the Miles video icon. BBC clip..
  23. Don Ellis 'New Ideas' (New Jazz)
  24. Apparently Mike W doesn't want this one reissued as part of the 'Impressed' series so other than original vinyl, the Japanese CD is the only option with this album. Get 'em while they are here ! Nice album, the final track 'Original Peter' has a great groove and Norma Winstone is also on it ('nuff said).
