  1. Pat Martino 'El Hombre' (Prestige Blue Label stereo) to follow:- John Cameron 'Off Centre' (Deram, mono) - with Harold McNair.
  2. I'm also pretty partial to his work with Max Roach, particularly in tandem with George Coleman and Ray Draper on 'Deeds Not Words'.
  3. I've just got through repeated spins of disk 1 and a spin of disk 2 and already the verdict is a big thumbs up. Release of the year so far, for me. Big impression of disk 1 is just how funky it is. Reminds me quite a bit of 'Grass Roots', same sort of groove. A bit ragged in spots but overall - excelent. Some very catchy tunes too, level of composition very high. Big suprise hearing Andrew on organ on CD 2. Immediate connections for me with the sound of Sun Ra but yes, definitely also a hint of Larry Young. The Kermit Moore string quartet material I knew from the vinyl double but 'Illusion' sounds absolutely beautiful. Malcolm Addey has done a great job with the mastering. Five Stars !
  4. Wow - especially in such lousy condition..
  5. BFrank - Your description of the 'Cornbread' matches mine, except that my copy is a stereo. I have a Donald Byrd 'Mustang' though which is in mono and also matches your description. Very early Liberty-era pressings, quite rare.
  6. I would say certainly in the $200 to $350 mark, depending on condition. The 'Cliff Jordan' probably more. I recently got hold of an original of that particular Silver title and love the sound of that one. Hang on to them !
  7. Time to stock up...
  8. That's the usual ! I'm suprised at the comments about the sound on 'Slice of the Top'. It's way better than the LT-series 'Rainbow' original. I'll have to give it a spin a bit later. I'm still impressed with the sound of the 'Basra'. Holds up quite well against the NY USA original, IMO, although the sound is not as full.
  9. I'm tempted to say 'yes', BFrank, but I'm not so sure. The reason for this is that yesterday I was playing my NY USA stereo of 'Unity'. This copy has the heavy Plastilite familiar from 'ear' LPs, has the NY USA labels and the typical NY sleeve. No mention of Liberty anywhere. Inner liner mentions '1966' above the LP pictures so that pretty well nails it as 'original' or thereabouts. The sound quality of this mint LP is magnificent - commensurate with an early pressing so I would say that this one is probably 'original'. In contrast, I have probably half a dozen Blue Notes with NY USA labels, again of the 1966/67 vintage but with mention of 'Liberty Records' on the front cover. Lee Morgan 'Cornbread' is a good example of this. They also sometimes have serated rims on the LP - again this is something I associate with Liberty LPs.
  10. No, but I need an LP #1 Anyone have one spare?
  11. Time to forget che and his ilk I think and for us all to get back to discussing jazz and keeping the Board the great place that it is. Let's put it in perspective - on the internet you are bound to get the occasional bout of 'destructive interference' of this type. Life's like that. Its time for all of us to rise above all of this and keep the Board the great place that it is for discussing all things jazz with a most convivial fraternity. That's my two peneth' anyway.
  12. Could be a Liberty-era pressing of this one The Blue Note labelography site says that Liberty-era disks had "BLUE NOTE RECORDS · A DIVISION OF LIBERTY RECORDS, INC" printed on the label. (not "NEW YORK USA") No. There are some LPs pressed in the 'Liberty' era (ie. just after Alfred Lion sold up) which still have the 'NY USA' labels.
  13. It was interesting watching him pack up his horns after the gig. Some musicians would just chuck the whole lot in the cases pronto and rush out. He really took his time - meticulously dismantling the kit and checking it all out. Incredible !
  14. Larry Young 'Unity' (NY USA stereo). Kicks ass !
  15. Cool, AB A good move I think - sadly.
  16. Just want to put in a plug here for the two Indo-Jazz Fusions CDs put out by John Mayer in the years before he very sadly passed (road accident). They are: 'Inja' (Indo Jazz Fusions 2000 on FMR) 'Shiva Nataraj King of Dance (also FMR) Both of these CDs offer a very nice updating of the classic Harriott/Mayer material, with some contemporary touches. I was very disappointed not to get to see this group locally when they toured the material about 3-4 years ago (they closed admission about 5 minutes before I arrived in a wonderful rural church venue). John Mayer is very sadly missed indeed on the UK scene..
  17. Chewatch JC update Quote: 'Thank you Che and welcome, please make sure to stop by in Speakout the thread Stop By and Say Hello First' Uh oh.......
  18. I like pretty well everything that he did but for me pride of place has to go to the Candid 'Out Front' and the 'Time' quartet (re-issued on Island as 'The Legendary Quartet Album'). Those two are desert island recordings, IMO. I think Booker was right on the cusp of greatness at the time he tragically passed on. His achievements have been asimilated to an extent (Kenny Wheeler comes to mind) but really not given the credit they deserve.
  19. Agree with you about the 'John Jenkins' cover. I have a nice Toshiba of that one. Just spinning the 'Wally Edition' Pete La Roca 'Basra'. Sounds pretty good, he did a nice job on this one. Followed up with Jackie McLean 'Bluesnik' 47W63rd deepgroove side 2 (one of my favourites) and Grant Green 'Gratstand' mono original, with some very nice Yusef Lateef. Then another Wally. Wayne Shorter 'Etcetera'.
  20. Sam is a lovely character. He was kindness personified when I had chance to chat with him several months ago and he signed all of the BN LPs that I brought along that night in a very fine script. I just wish that I had got my act together to ask him some more questions e.g. the background to the Dameron BN session and what it was like in Miles' Band but, of course, words always fail at such moments.
  21. You are rich..
  22. Cool shot ! btw - I didn't realise that 'parenting 3 kids' was yet another activity he fitted in between posts..
  23. He gets an amazingly big sound on the 'Progress Report' Jasmine reissue of the Tempo sessions too. Very enjoyable stuff - well worth picking up if you see it.
  24. I've seen this one go for at least $150 in mono, if it has the ear.
