  1. That makes sense, Kevin. The 'Sweet Honey Bee' master was either wrecked or lost - it was mentioned in a thread on the BNBB some years ago. In fact several of the posters at the time found pristine originals of this session that they pondered even opening and playing (was it 'Swinging Swede'?). In general though, the sound of the Wally's is excellent and, as has been mentioned by Parkertown, up there with the Classic Reissues. I gave 'Patterns' a spin last night and it was pretty damn good, to say the least. I want one of those Big John 'Let Em Roll's too
  2. Could be a Liberty-era pressing of this one
  3. Doing all of the above whilst also posting continuously 24/7 What a guy !
  4. Me too - Conn and Tosh
  5. Great session - and I think Rivers fits in just fine, adjusting his style to that of the group. I would agree that 'Unity' is the better session but this one runs it fairly close. I suspect that when it first came out it was a very poor seller for Blue Note - you rarely ever see vinyl of this one. Wonder why that was?
  6. I think $15 is definitely a fair price. Most of mine were around the £10 mark so that would have been about $15 at the going exchange rate. For fans of the vinyl as distinct from CDs, these LPs are a pretty good buy. Many are on heavy vinyl too.
  7. Also just checked my 'spare' 'Sweet Honey Bee'. I thought it was a Wally but it turns out to be just a Rare Groove..
  8. I've just checked my Wallys ( ) and it looks as though I have more than I thought. In addition to the 'Basra' and 'Patterns' (the latter is in mint and was from Hiroshi) I have: Lee Morgan 'The Procrastinator' Art Blakey 'Like Someone In Love' Wayne Shorter 'The All Seeing Eye' (this one signed on the back for me by Wayne) Hank Mobley 'A Slice of the Top' Lou Donaldson 'Sunny Side Up' Hank Mobley 'The Turnaround' Bobby Hutcherson 'Components' All are great !

Here's the cover for the 'Russo In London' LP recorded for Lansdowne, Tooter. By the way, there's a rumour that Spotlite may be re-issuing the Kinsey 'Thames Suite' on CD in the forthcoming future (just a rumour, I'm afraid).
  10. Wally Traugot Capitol re-masters, I guess. I have the 'Basra' and 'Patterns' and I agree, they sound great.
  11. I have the Dauntless vinyl of 'Lawrence of Arabia' and have just splashed out on an original Audio Fidelity vinyl of 'Plays Unity'. Can't wait to heat it. Just love Walt Dickerson's 60s albums (and his 70s Steeplechases too...)
  12. Thanks for the link. A nice little broadcast, just the thing to get me drooling before another day in the office ( ). For anyone thinking of purchasing the Farmer/Golson Mosaic, take care in case you go straight to their site and order the set after hearing the samples. They are magnificent ! (I resisted......for now at least). That 'Dinah' set also sounds most interesting. That's one I've added to the 'future wants' list, never thought it would be my thing but I like what I hear. Kevin Whitehead should be working for Mosaic sales dept.
  13. .....................
  14. Just received my Hill Select set. This one is #072. Have been giving CD1 a repeated hearing, some fascinating music on this collection. Highly recommended !
  15. Last night: Donald Byrd 'Mustang' (NY USA mono) Art Blakey 'Indestructible' (NY USA mono) Currently on the dark side playing the first disk of the Hill Select..
  16. Wasn't 'Barb' a friend of the group, with the 'wizard' being the Prince of Darkness himself? (or so I heard). Both great albums. And a great reminder to me to get these two out of the rack tonight. I've got NY USA original vinyls of both and they sound wonderful - the dynamics of Williams drum work is captured superbly by RVG. Grachan Moncur's 'Some Other Stuff' has something of the same adventurous feel..
  17. Not to forget that Butler is also on the four 'Xanadu at Montreux' LPs.. B-)
  18. I've pre-ordered the set too
  19. The Amy/Bolton was recorded in 1962 (not sure exactly when). It is combined on the video with a broadcast by the Paul Horn Quintet.
  20. No - I don't think these have ever been put out on DVD. They were released back in the 1980s I think on 'Kay Jazz', put out by TCB Releasing Ltd (who were then based in Frome, Somerset UK - I think). I'm not sure if they have anything to do with the 'Swiss' TCB, suspect that these are two entirely separate enterprises. From my recollection, the UK TCB provided a valuable library facility for jazz film rental, including supply to the likes of the BBC.
  21. Al Haig 'Jazz Will O The Wisp' (Xtra)
  22. On the subject of the Jazz Crusaders, there's a great video of a TV recording of some of the 'Freedom Sounds' material put out yonks ago by TCB in a series called called 'Video Jazz'. Recorded in LA in the early 1960s for the series 'Frankly Jazz'. This particular video has about 30 minutes by the Jazz Crusaders and 30 minutes by Gerald Wilson's Orchestra. Priceless ! Tracks include: 'The Young Rabbits' 'After You've Gone' 'Freedom Sound' May Ann McCall on vocals is featured on one number - not the automatic choice of vocalist for this group, I would think... Other releases in this series include Curtis Amy/Dupree Bolton and Stan Kenton.
