  1. Used a bit of the old lemon in the cooking tonight. Sea bass and Atlantic prawns marinated in garlic, lemon and white wine and cooked in a dill sauce. Served with rice and grilled tomatos.
  2. Trigger finger at the ready...
  3. 'Jazzbo Henning' It has a certain 'ring' to it..
  4. Cannonball Adderley 'Quintet at the Lighthouse' (Riverside blue label DG). Wow, Cannonball's on fire on this one. Wally Heider also did a great job with the recording. Followed by: Don Cherry 'Symphony for Improvisers' (BN NY USA mono, Liberty cover. One of those 'transitional' pressings).
  5. As part of the recent Jazz Britannia season, BBC4 put out an hour's show which was a compilation of the following: - Bill Le Sage 'Directions in Jazz' (with Ronnie Ross) - Johnny Scott Quintet - Tony Kinsey Quintet + Annie Ross - John Dankworth Quintet + Cleo Laine - Tubby Hayes Big Band - Victor Feldman Trio Interesting to see the Harriott/Mayer 'Indo Jazz Fusions' in the list. Almost certainly that one was wiped. Absolutely tragic. There was also a series of around 6 broadcasts put out by this group on HTV (West of England regional channel) which suffered the same fate.
  6. $300 is about right for a mint(ish) set. That's about what I paid. I have the CD set as well but just occasionally its nice to pull out the Mosaic Davis/Evans and luxuriate in all of that Q-LP sound. To me, this set is priceless. I saw this particular sale a couple of days ago when it was around the $300. It looked to be heading up big time even then. There was also a Nat Cole CD box that was already around $550. I can never work out the pricing with Mosaics. It's like a yo-yo...
  7. Thanks for the encouragement ! I'd started to give up on this one as a lost cause but I gotta hear that Big John ( ). An interesting stock at the $£&**^%$s to say the least. How the heck did I miss that Gitte & Francy Boland? That's one that's been on my list for a good long time, would love to have the vinyl. Originally on some obscure German label (called 'Hor Zu', or something similar I think).
  8. What's a tilapia? Us coastal types are more familiar with things like cod and halibut..
  9. There's a 'Hubbard' in addition to the 'Hubbard and Heath' on this Label M series. All well worth picking up. The interior of the Left Bank Jazz Society by the way is featured in parts of the Sun Ra 'Joyful Noise' DVD.
  10. Walt Dickerson 'Plays Unity' (Audio Fidelity)
  11. Just had an email saying that Big John's 'Minor Swing' is out of stock. Why the hell list it then? B$st%%rds..
  12. 'Lee Morgan Sextet' (BN Lexington DG pressing)
  13. I've got the feeling that the Blakey is the same as the Moon CD you mention (I think there has been another thread on this, don't have the CD only the VHS). The lineup:- Blakey, Lee Morgan, John Gilmore, John Hicks, Victor Sproles Recorded 7th March 1965 (38 minutes). Tracks:- 'On the Ginza', 'Lament for Stacey', 'The Egyptian', 'I Can't Get Started', 'Buhaina's Delight'.
  14. Lemon. It's invaluable when cooking fish and a G&T wouldn't be the same without it !
  15. This thread will explain... Dizzy and Val Wilmer
  16. I remember just before these went out of print, Tower in London were selling them for about £6 each. Instead of buying the whole shebang I was careful and picked up the two Cannonbals, the Diz and the Blakey. I missed out on the two Bill Evanses, the Wes, The Willy the Lion, the MJQ and the Ben Webster. The Red Allen is really good by the way. He puts in a sterling performance with Alex Welsh's band. The 'JATP' is also interesting- the infamous T-Bone/Diz gig in Kilburn.
  17. Series started in 1964, around the time of the first broadcasts on the then-new BBC2 channel. Continued into 1965 but not, I believe, beyond this. I've got a number of them on commercial VHS (put out by PNE video), also some recorded off of the Beeb. First series was hosted by Steve Race, the second by Humphrey Littleton. Favourites of the lot are the Cannonball, the Golson/Hayes and the Blakey with John Gilmore. Quite a few of them were reputedly wiped by the BBC in the rush for spare tape. There were a number re-broadcast by BBC2 in the mid 1980s with fresh insights into the performances given by Steve Race and Humph. I hope that the Beeb will do another re-transmission this Century.
  18. Love that shirt, vibes. Where from?
  19. Great choice. 'Basher' eh? Heresy !! Saw Billy H on quite a few occasions and I can vouch that he was anything but. Completely the opposite, in fact. Incredible sense of time, superb taste. This is one of those marvellous Blue Notes where the 'holy triumvirate' of soul, taste and intense drive are beautifully balanced. This was the start of an incredible run of 'adventurous' Jackie McLean Blue Notes (extending into GM's 'Evolution') which have long been favourites for me. Good prompt to bring the vinyl out and give it a spin this afternoon. Further thoughts will then follow.
  20. Some nice British jazz to start the day: Tony Coe 'Zeitgeist' (EMI Lansdowne) Gordon Beck 'Experiments With Pops' (Major Minor) Graham Collier 'Deep Dark Blue Centre' (Deram) Mike Gibbs 'Michael Gibbs' and 'Tanglewood '63' (both Deram)
  21. Will do. Can't wait to hear it !!
  22. I just had to have that Big John Patton 'Minor Swing' on DIW (it won't be on there for long I think) but whilst I was there I got the Mabern 'Straight Street', the Byrd 'Transition Sessions' and the Westbrook 'Love Songs'. Oh dear......
  23. The sound quality on these early-generation CDs is phenomenal. Incredibly consistent music right through all of these CDs and Manne is just amazing. I also recommend the two Contemporary 'Manne Hole' CDs too.
  24. Great post . Couldn't have said it better.
