Which Mosaic Are You Enjoying Right Now?
sidewinder replied to Soulstation1's topic in Mosaic and other box sets...
Count Basie 'Complete Roulette Live' box on the LP format. Superlative ! -
Love his playing on 'Byrd In Hand'. Especially on 'Devil Whip'.
-
That would make sense. The exhibition was hosted by Balmain Fine Arts, who are based in the NE. Most of the material though, I believe, was provided by Jo Gelbart.
-
I love the Jacquet Mosaic (I know it gets mixed opinions) so this is a no-brainer !
-
Thanks, AB ! I'll keep an eye out for it at my usual 'haunts' on the off-chance of finding it. Good to hear the on this one (I've yet to hear an 'Elite' I didn't like - not often you can say that about a reissue series). The most recent one I got was the Johnny Smith (1960s material, very nice) which I picked up for about 6 or 7 pounds second hand. :rsmile:

This is a great Elite CD - good reminder to pull it off the rack and give it a spin. Love the arrangements and I think Cleveland gets just about the best sound out of the bone of any jazz trombonist I can think of. A joy to behold. He was also sporadically active in the LA area until quite recently, I believe.

Great series - up there with Mosaic in terms of shear all-round brilliance. A good way to discover a lot of great artists whose work was fairly new to me (Thigpen a good example). I'm missing a couple - the Jacquet for one. Got hold of the Johnny Smith quite recently and the Tal Mosaic renders the Farlow now surplus to requirements.

Tony Oxley '4 Compositions for Sextet' (UK CBS) Miles Davis 'Amandla' (Warner Brothers)

Good stuff. Whenever I see those words 'Concert Band' on the spine it conjours up images of Tal and the guys in tuxes and bow ties performing in a palm court, sort of Paul-Whitemanish.. :rsmile:

Happy Birthday, Bright Moments
sidewinder replied to brownie's topic in Miscellaneous - Non-Political
Yes, very Happy Birthday ! :rsmile: -
Was in London yesterday, mainly to check out this exhibition over in Cork Street. It featured around 100 drawings and around a dozen canvases, mainly provided for sale by Jo Gelbart. The canvases are Davis/Gelbart collaborations and include the haunting 'Untitled', completed in the last month before Miles' death and with a real sense of forboding to it. The drawings were mainly produced by Davis between 1981 and 1985 and originally owned I believe by his friend Giulia Trojer, who features along with Miles in quite a few of them. Some of the content of the drawings was pretty strong and not suitable for family viewing. Miles didn't hold back ! The exhibition was truly fascinating. Especially on the drawings, Miles had quite a delicate style and he seemed especially fascinated at this stage with the human form and dancers in particular. Some of it is also quite funny. One of the colaborations with Jo Gelbart, in addition to having the word 'love' included on it also manages to sneak in the word 'a**hole' a bit lower down. The BBC showed I short clip of an interview with Gelbart last week and it can be accessed using Real Player via the following link. Access via 'Open More Audio/Video Clips' on the bottom RHS. Then click 'Entertainment' to bring up the Miles video icon. BBC clip..

Ordered from Dusty (bastards!) lately?
sidewinder replied to connoisseur series500's topic in Miscellaneous Music
Apparently Mike W doesn't want this one reissued as part of the 'Impressed' series so other than original vinyl, the Japanese CD is the only option with this album. Get 'em while they are here ! Nice album, the final track 'Original Peter' has a great groove and Norma Winstone is also on it ('nuff said). -
Used a bit of the old lemon in the cooking tonight. Sea bass and Atlantic prawns marinated in garlic, lemon and white wine and cooked in a dill sauce. Served with rice and grilled tomatos.

'Jazzbo Henning' It has a certain 'ring' to it.. -
Cannonball Adderley 'Quintet at the Lighthouse' (Riverside blue label DG). Wow, Cannonball's on fire on this one. Wally Heider also did a great job with the recording. Followed by: Don Cherry 'Symphony for Improvisers' (BN NY USA mono, Liberty cover. One of those 'transitional' pressings).

As part of the recent Jazz Britannia season, BBC4 put out an hour's show which was a compilation of the following: - Bill Le Sage 'Directions in Jazz' (with Ronnie Ross) - Johnny Scott Quintet - Tony Kinsey Quintet + Annie Ross - John Dankworth Quintet + Cleo Laine - Tubby Hayes Big Band - Victor Feldman Trio Interesting to see the Harriott/Mayer 'Indo Jazz Fusions' in the list. Almost certainly that one was wiped. Absolutely tragic. There was also a series of around 6 broadcasts put out by this group on HTV (West of England regional channel) which suffered the same fate.

$300 is about right for a mint(ish) set. That's about what I paid. I have the CD set as well but just occasionally its nice to pull out the Mosaic Davis/Evans and luxuriate in all of that Q-LP sound. To me, this set is priceless. I saw this particular sale a couple of days ago when it was around the $300. It looked to be heading up big time even then. There was also a Nat Cole CD box that was already around $550. I can never work out the pricing with Mosaics. It's like a yo-yo...

Thanks for the encouragement ! I'd started to give up on this one as a lost cause but I gotta hear that Big John ( ). An interesting stock at the $£&**^%$s to say the least. How the heck did I miss that Gitte & Francy Boland? That's one that's been on my list for a good long time, would love to have the vinyl. Originally on some obscure German label (called 'Hor Zu', or something similar I think). -
What's a tilapia? Us coastal types are more familiar with things like cod and halibut..

There's a 'Hubbard' in addition to the 'Hubbard and Heath' on this Label M series. All well worth picking up. The interior of the Left Bank Jazz Society by the way is featured in parts of the Sun Ra 'Joyful Noise' DVD.
