I could not have said this better myself, Jazzbo. The 'Hymns Spheres' 2LP set is a stunning achievement, sounds awesome if you have a decent turntable (check out the resonances when he pulls those stops out) and that introductory hymn is an immensely moving piece of work.

Terribly sad news about a fellow forum member

Truly sorry to hear this. Always enjoyed reading his contributions on both this board and the BNBB, a real enthusiast. RIP Ken. -

I see from the reports that ex-German Chancellor Helmut Kohl was amongst the tourists who were rescued in Sri Lanka. -
It's track 5 (can't recall the title at the current time) which really impresses me. Incredible interplay between Hutcherson, Green and Patton, almost like passing the baton in a relay race. Quite rightly, Big John gets the honours with a great second solo before the lead out. Also Big John's very supportive backing to the soloists is superb. An amazing track, perfection really..

Nice to see this thread brought up again. Incredible fireworks between Patton and Grant Green on this session. Interesting though to compare this version of 'The Yodel' with the version on Grasella Oliphant's 'Grass Is Greener' LP. The Grassela version is very worthwhile but with nowhere near the same level of drive and impact. Atlantic's low-level recording also doesn't do it too many favours. 'Let Em Roll' has been in very heavy rotation on my car CD player. For my money that one is probably Patton's very best for Blue Note. Gets better every time I hear it - a masterpiece.

Reid Miles Blue Note Cover Art
sidewinder replied to sidewinder's topic in Miscellaneous - Non-Political
Yep, that's the one. I have a free 'spot' on the lounge wall for the 'Unity' framed print and a Habitat 10% off voucher so will probably put in an order for this one. -
Have a great one, with lots of good music (hopefully)

Well, no shipping insurance (mandatory at this sort of price level if you ask me), no payment method other than cash transfer, no seller history....
-
Noticed this one from a seller in Columbia with no previous history and no paypal/bidpay on offer. One for the truly brave/foolhardy/reckless perhaps? Tina Brooks LP

Art Farmer 'Modern Art'. Original UA stereo pressing. Sublime ! Just listened to my avatar recording. Henry Lowther Band 'Child Song' on Deram. An obscure but wonderful British jazz classic. One of the old BBC radio jazz programmes ('Jazz Today', I think) used to use one of the tracks ('Travelling Song') as a theme tune. Always liked this one. Next on deck it will be the Kenny Clarke/Francy Boland 'Sextet' 2LP set on Rearward.

I'll second the comment about Euclid. I've had several packages of LPs shipped to over here in England and there's never been a problem. Lots of bubble wrap, very securely packed. Some good stuff acquired from Euclid - original vinyl of 'Impressions of a Patch of Blue', 'Unity', 'Capuchin Swing' and 'Delighfulee' to name but four. None of them mint but the condition was well up to scratch. Always a pleasure to deal with Euclid.. :rsmile:

In the process of doing my post-Xmas sale shopping yesterday I noticed that the 'Habitat' store here in the UK was doing mounted prints of 3 Reid Miles items and that they were also on sale. B-) The 3 titles are Tina Brooks 'True Blue', Kenny Dorham 'Trompeta Toccata' and Sonny Clark 'Trio'. My eyes nearly popped out of their sockets as these were displayed amongst the usual Habitat prints of jars of fruit, seascapes, floral scenes etc. Sale price for these mounted prints (which look pretty damn good) is £9 each. A further suprise awaited me when I checked out the furniture section upstairs. There on display was a 1m x 1m matted and framed wall print of Larry Young 'Unity'. Not part of the sale unfortunately - £140 and part of their 'standard' range at the present time. Looking at the prints (which are more than acceptable) I suspect that they are taken from the Marsh/Callingham 'Blue Note Cover Art' book. I came out with a Tina Books and a Kenny Dorham (passed on the Clark as it was a 'Liberty' era cover ) Might be of interest to anyone in the UK posting fraternity who has a spare wall to cover up. There's also Reid Miles greetings cards on sale at branches of Waterstones. About £2 each. About half a dozen titles available including 'Unity', 'The Turnaround', 'True Blue', 'Sonny Clark Trio' and one of the Jimmy Smith titles. Wonder if and when they will be covering the likes of Grachan Moncur 'Some Other Stuff' and Tyrone Washington 'Natural Essence'. Spring collection, possibly?..

Christmas; What did you ask for?

What time should I be over? There's still about half of it left in the fridge ! -
The Mosaics will have to go up in the Space Station I guess !

I have these three and will second that comment. Just love the sound of those East Wind Direct-To-Disk. I got hold of the Cedar Walton/Clifford Jordan 'Pentagon' around the time it came out and still think it is one of the best.

Two more Japanese LPs. 'Rolandscape' by the Roland Hanna Trio on Progressive Records. Followed by 'Debut' by Bobby Shew on Discomate. This last one is produced by Toshiko. I'll probably follow these up with Lew Tabakin's 'Rites of Pan'.

Also got a copy of this for Xmas - an excellent read and good to dip in and out of. Just a shame that I would have to mail it over to the US in order for Larry to sign it. Highlights so far include the illuminating article about Wilbur Campbell, a fairly new name to me. No Mosaics but on a practical note I did get a great roasting pan, which is currently being 'Christened' in the oven with a leg joint of organic Dorset lamb and full roast trimmings ! -
Sam Rivers 'Contours' in the mono NY USA version. A wonderful and very under-rated Blue Note 60s session. I don't think Rivers has bettered this one. Also been playing a bundle of Japanese Atlas pressings. 'Angel Wings' by Jack Sheldon and 'His West Coast Friends' and Sonny Stitt 'Groovin' High' - ditto. Art Pepper features most prominently on both of these, which were also included in the CD format 'Hollywood All Stars' set. Good music, beautifully presented by Atlas.

I know there's at least one piece of vinyl under the tree for me to open up tomorrow. A King pressing of Bobby Hutcherson's 'Oblique'. There's also a Bud Powell 'Complete Verve' CD set. I'm pretty sure there's also a copy of Larry Kart's book in the gift pile. Looking forward to reading that one ! Was also hoping that the Krupa/James Mosaic set would arrive by this week but it looks as if it is still stuck in a slow boat. Ah well... :rsly: -
Just got hold of the four Sam Noto LPs on Xanadu. Gave 'Entrance!' a listen, pretty nice quartet date with Barry Harris. All of these were in mint and in two cases, still sealed. Can't understand why old copies of the Penguin Guide gave these Noto sessions such a low rating (around the 2 stars level). They got that one wrong. Also picked up Volume 1 of the 'Montreux' set for some Xmas listening. I wonder if Sam Noto is still actively playing in the Toronto/Buffalo area?

Jean 'Toots' Thielemans 'Man Bites Harmonica' on Japanese Riverside. Just love these Japanese pressings...

Season's greetings, peace and happiness and lots of good listening to all !

No qualms at all re: the sound quality of this batch of Hayes Fontanas. The two Ronnie Scotts live dates, 'Tubbs' and 'Tubbs Tours' are all in stereo and sound pretty damn good to me. Other than parting with £500 for an original mint vinyl 'Down In The Village', this is about as good as it gets. I compared the title track of 'Down In The Village' on the Jap Fontana to the version included on the Gilles Peterson 'Impressed' compilation and if anything, it is even better than the fine sounding version on the Peterson. Great music, 'Tubbs Tours' in particular is a real find with some nice Ronnie Ross (paging Tooter.... ) on alto. Dusty Groove strikes again !
