  1. The Mosaics will have to go up in the Space Station I guess !
  2. I have these three and will second that comment. Just love the sound of those East Wind Direct-To-Disk. I got hold of the Cedar Walton/Clifford Jordan 'Pentagon' around the time it came out and still think it is one of the best.
  3. Two more Japanese LPs. 'Rolandscape' by the Roland Hanna Trio on Progressive Records. Followed by 'Debut' by Bobby Shew on Discomate. This last one is produced by Toshiko. I'll probably follow these up with Lew Tabakin's 'Rites of Pan'.
  4. Also got a copy of this for Xmas - an excellent read and good to dip in and out of. Just a shame that I would have to mail it over to the US in order for Larry to sign it. Highlights so far include the illuminating article about Wilbur Campbell, a fairly new name to me. No Mosaics but on a practical note I did get a great roasting pan, which is currently being 'Christened' in the oven with a leg joint of organic Dorset lamb and full roast trimmings !
  5. Sam Rivers 'Contours' in the mono NY USA version. A wonderful and very under-rated Blue Note 60s session. I don't think Rivers has bettered this one. Also been playing a bundle of Japanese Atlas pressings. 'Angel Wings' by Jack Sheldon and 'His West Coast Friends' and Sonny Stitt 'Groovin' High' - ditto. Art Pepper features most prominently on both of these, which were also included in the CD format 'Hollywood All Stars' set. Good music, beautifully presented by Atlas.
  6. I know there's at least one piece of vinyl under the tree for me to open up tomorrow. A King pressing of Bobby Hutcherson's 'Oblique'. There's also a Bud Powell 'Complete Verve' CD set. I'm pretty sure there's also a copy of Larry Kart's book in the gift pile. Looking forward to reading that one ! Was also hoping that the Krupa/James Mosaic set would arrive by this week but it looks as if it is still stuck in a slow boat. Ah well... :rsly:
  7. Just got hold of the four Sam Noto LPs on Xanadu. Gave 'Entrance!' a listen, pretty nice quartet date with Barry Harris. All of these were in mint and in two cases, still sealed. Can't understand why old copies of the Penguin Guide gave these Noto sessions such a low rating (around the 2 stars level). They got that one wrong. Also picked up Volume 1 of the 'Montreux' set for some Xmas listening. I wonder if Sam Noto is still actively playing in the Toronto/Buffalo area?
  8. Jean 'Toots' Thielemans 'Man Bites Harmonica' on Japanese Riverside. Just love these Japanese pressings...
  9. Season's greetings, peace and happiness and lots of good listening to all !
  10. No qualms at all re: the sound quality of this batch of Hayes Fontanas. The two Ronnie Scotts live dates, 'Tubbs' and 'Tubbs Tours' are all in stereo and sound pretty damn good to me. Other than parting with £500 for an original mint vinyl 'Down In The Village', this is about as good as it gets. I compared the title track of 'Down In The Village' on the Jap Fontana to the version included on the Gilles Peterson 'Impressed' compilation and if anything, it is even better than the fine sounding version on the Peterson. Great music, 'Tubbs Tours' in particular is a real find with some nice Ronnie Ross (paging Tooter.... ) on alto. Dusty Groove strikes again !
  11. Just been playing a Japanese A&M LP of Paul Desmond 'Out of the Afternoon'. Wonderful pressing, a good test record for the system. Currently it's Wayne Shorter 'Oddesey of Iska' BN Liberty.
  12. 'Tears of Joy' was originally issued by CBS on a 2LP set (plus a quadraphonic version, apparently) in the early 1970s. It's sort of in the same vein as the 'Fillmore' set ie. large orchestra playing complex time signature, rock-influenced arrangements (quite a few by Milcho Leviev, who is given prominence in the set). I think there's even a string section in there too. Sort of a natural progression after 'Electric Bath' and 'Autumn' - recommended. Haven't heard 'Connection' I'm afraid - this is the one Don Ellis recording that I don't have.
  13. Patricia - I saw a copy of that Rick Wakeman 'Six Wives' LP in a rack over here quite recently and was tempted. It was about 1974 since I last heard that one !
  14. Alexander - prepare to be drawn in and made to be 'involved' with the music with vinyl. This is something that I find the CD medium just doesn't deliver, that sense of 'intimacy'. Sometimes I will put up with LPs with background noise and the odd bump just to get this, in preference to a CD.
  15. That 'Down To Earth' in mono is a winner ! Just re-levelled my deck with a spirit level. Very noticeable improvements in sonic quality. Maybe the house is sinking.. ? Currently spinning the following: Lou Donaldson 'The Natural Soul' BN NY USA mono Donald Byrd 'Byrd In Flight' BN 47W63rd mono (non deep-groove).
  16. Just at the time when you don't want to put in another order with The Bastards they do the dirty and list all those Jazz In Pais CDs and throw in a few cheap Conns for the bargain. Makes me sick !
  17. Frantic bidding here to secure a rare damaged in-print Byrd/Adams set Byrd Adams Blowout
  18. Followed up with Donald Byrd 'Mustang' NY USA mono..
  19. What the heck are the sona and chromodalphone?
  20. This one is shifting fast, for sure. My set was around the 2000 mark and that was about a year ago. Zweitausendeins.de are still listing it in stock though and at a reasonable price, for any Euro-denominator who doesn't want to wait. B-)
  21. Art Pepper 'Live at the Village Vanguard' Contemporary 3LP set, King pressing courtesy of Mr Tanno..
  22. RCA stereo deepgroove pressing. Sounds nice but some annoying fadeouts.
  23. I once had JJ Johnson's trombone slide extending over my head with just inches to spare, at a concert in NYC. I was a bit nervous with this but his judgement on the clearance was amazingly accurate and he didn't waiver. B-)
