  2. Aha - The Marte Roling cover.. Thanks John, I'm looking forward to this one ! Just love those 60s Fontanas. I've got the Ted Curson and Dollar Brand somewhere in the racks.
  3. Thanks for the link ! I'd been hoping that the PMG would be back in the UK this year but looks as if the nearest they will get will be France..
  4. Hey, that's the one !!! I'm confusing my Escorts with my Cortinas. Must have been a Mk 3... No furry dice and dashboard though
  5. Krupa/James CD1. So far so good !
  6. Orange Ford Escort. The 'Mk 4' UK variant. Pretty sure it was the Ghia as it had the chrome trim on the sides. Polished to perfection ! Thinking about it again though, that detective was in the front and it was the lady plus the hat box in the back. Long time ago now, must have been about 1981. A tight squeeze, for sure, in the back of that car nevertheless..
  7. Just about anything from Big John Patton. Particularly the stuff on his Mosaic select. And anything on the Sun Ra 'Singles' 2CD set
  8. Didn't he do some work with Evan Parker and the SME in the late 1960s?
  9. "How did Rudy Van Gelder get his ear in the dead wax ?"
  10. Looks like SHE should have been in the driver's seat of the damn Mercedes instead of that Henri Paul on the night of her fatal crash! The thing that attracted my attention that day was the condition of the car - absolutely immaculate and polished, you just don't see that in London. I was in the passenger seat and she (in the driver's seat) must have been less than 3 feet or so away fro me, based on the spacing of the cars. Absolutely amazing makeup job she had - quite beautiful too. I was gobsmacked ! In the back of the car was a detective and lady-in-waiting, with what looked to be a hat case. There was a bit of a delay at the lights but when she was recognised it was straight through those lights. The car was a Ford Escort Ghia, I believe.
  11. I seem to recall that she was heavily into George Michael and 'Wham' ( ) as well. She had exquisite musical taste.... Funilly enough she pulled up driving a car next to me in London one day, not far from Buck House. Incredibly made up, just on her way to see Charlie Boy not long before the wedding. When I recognised here she went red as a beetroot and sped off through red lights at high speed...
  12. Not sure about the shops but Goldmine says $100 in near mint for the 'Chronicle' 12LP set.
  13. Charles Mingus 'My Favourite Quintet' on America Records. Some misleading BS on the front cover about this being the Town Hall concert with Dolphy and co. It's not, the group has Hilyer, McPherson & co. Absolutely insane version of 'Cocktails For Two' on this.

    ray russell

I remember seeing Ray Russell in that Gil Evans orchestra during one of their weeks at Ronnie Scotts. He fitted very nicely into that lineup (along with Surman, Don Weller and co.) I believe that after that tour Gil returned to Europe to play in Russell's group at the Montreux Fest, so they must have got along pretty well. 'Dragon Hill' was originally put out on CBS Realm I believe..
  15. I have a copy of this which I picked up many years ago around 1980 at a Mole Jazz sale, without the box and booklet and with LPs in plain sleeves. Sounds OK, nothing earth-shattering. The Bergenfield LPs sound significantly better though, if you can find them in good condition.
  16. 'Peeping Tom' was banned for many years in the UK and Powell's career never recovered - tragic. I remember seeing it at about 4am in an all-night student film show. About the only outlet here at the time to see it.
  17. My 1978 vintage Zerostat is still going strong. I think it cost about £5 at the time !
  18. Certainly exists - but rare. There was one on ebay a short while back. I suspect that the stereo of this one sounds the better, based on the 'Liberty' vintage.
  19. Second that opinion on 'New Wave'. It is a strong date by Dizzy with his early 60s group. I have this one on a Philips LP.
  20. Gerald Wilson disks 1 and 2. Wonderful !
  21. Re: the sound quality of CDs and LPs. In my opinion it is not clear cut, there are some instances where the LPs sound to me clearly superior (e.g. early BN LPs in good condition) but other occasions where the CDs shine. Case in point I have just 'AB'd a first pressing Pacific Jazz Gerald Wilson 'Moment of Truth' with Mosaic set CD1. The CD version sounds better to me, more dynamic range, more depth - most suprising. Possibly a byproduct of some fiddling around I have been doing with the connectors on the Naim CD power supply, which may not have been optimally set up previously. The very fine mastering on the Mosaic is also clearly a significant factor. End result is that the Mosaic CD sets are taking on a whole new life..
  22. Funny, the initial thought that came into my head when I saw this thread was Reuben Wilson 'On Broadway'. I had absolutely no idea what the artist, other album and the connection might be !
  23. Belated Best Wishes, A. Brass !
