There are a couple of his sessions that I have in my LP racks that I really should pull out more often. 'New York(Fall 1974)' and 'The Montreux/Berlin Concerts' 2LPs. Both Kenny Wheeler and George Lewis seem to fit with Braxton on the respective sessions, incredible stuff really. This Arista material is certainly overdue for re-assessment.

What band would you like to see live?
sidewinder replied to Steve Reynolds's topic in Miscellaneous Music
Is he? Can you link me to any information? There's a listing in this month's Jazzwise David. I'll post the dates on the board sometime during the weekend. It's with a 'UK RivBea' big band, comprising UK guys such as Tony Kofi and Ian Ballamy, sort of like the UK Andrew Hill Big Band of a couple of years ago. Off the top of my head there are dates scheduled in London, Southampton and Bath for sure.. Maybe there can be a meeting of the UK branch of the Organissimo members at the Southampton date ?? (I know of 2 board members with front row centre tickets ) Dead jealous ! B-) I'll almost certainly go for the Bath gig on the Wednesday at the Michael Tippett Centre and will possibly also treck down to Southampton on the Friday also. This one needs a repeat viewing ! -

Thanks, Brownie. I had the magazine in my hands just about to type in the dates ! -
Interesting thread, just happened to stumble across it. This one is by all accounts an extremely rare UK Vogue 10". Probably just as rare if not more so than the equivalent US BN 10". Not a great market out there for Elmo Hope in the mid 50s...

Jackie McLean Mosaic LP1. The 'Its Time' session with Tolliver, lovely stuff.
-
Johnny Griffin 'The Kerry Dancers' UK Riverside mono. To be followed by Lee Morgan 'Cornbread' NYC.

An incredible story. Maybe this was started by a Japanese tourist who saw the trendy (circa 1990) 'Cecil Gee' clotheswear chain in London and who also happened to have a King pressing of Wayne's 'The Collector'. Second the comments about McBee's playing. One of the under-heralded giants of the bass and a real team player for the groups in which he participates. I hope his lawsuit works out.

Kid Ory and Django sets are on the way...
sidewinder replied to DrJ's topic in Mosaic and other box sets...
DrJ - I think you're in for a treat. For a vinyl 'nut' like me to say the CDs sound great has to mean that Mosaic (specifically Malcolm) did a mighty fine job with this particular mastering. I had no Django material in my collection before getting these disks but one spin made it pretty obvious we are talking natural genius of the guitar here. Enjoy ! -

I have several of the disks from the Django acquired (funnily enough) from 'Djangos' and IMO the sound of the CDs is more than acceptable. Wonderful music - really timeless stuff. I really must pounce on the full set when I clear the latest Mosaic backlog.. -
The Bud Shank is tricky to score on vinyl. It's a good set though, very agreeable and relaxed listening (although there have been mixed opinions of it on this board). I picked up a CD copy from Mosaic just before it went OOP and the sound quality is to my ears more than OK. I've also been supplementing this with selective picks of some of the LPs when I can find them (for example just acquired a UK original Vogue copy of 'New Groove' in A1 condition - worth it for the cover art alone.. ). Good luck with getting hold of the Shank !

Still no sign of my 'Kenton Presents' and Teddy Wilson LPs. The Mosaic invoice arrived about 3-4 weeks ago. Looks like this consignment is on a slow boat to China

Looks like it's been buffed up on a shoe-shine rig !

The one Byron CD that I've always been a big fan of is 'Introducing the Fo'tet' from about 1989/90. That one hangs together as an advanced BN session extremely well ! The 'Music of Mickey Katz' CD also sounded pretty interesting too, although I haven't got a copy of that. Saw Byron live one time with Bill Frisell and Ralph Peterson (they were doing the 'Music For Six Musicians' and 'Tuskeegee' material). Very impressive, exploratory stuff. Particularly 'Tuskeegee'. Jazzwise magazine is offering a free BN CD for new subscriptions, with the Byron listed as an option, so I may just give this one a go.

Nothing much more to add. They both sound great on the LP. In fact this is as good a reminder as any for me to get the DeFranco/Clark off the shelf right now..

Speaking of the Imperial War Museum, I've never been to the one in Duxford, but I've been to the main one in London and it is very, very impressive. They've got a Blitz and a WWI exhibit where you're taken back to those times and I swear you feel like you're living the experience. In the Blitz, you're in the underground and the lights go out and bombs are blasting above you and the room shakes and it feels like you're the one being subjected to the bombing. If you're ever in London, don't miss this museum. Duxford is an outpost to the main London branch of the Imperial War Museum but if you want to see the actual aircraft then Duxford is the place ! There is a very large hangar just dedicated to USAF aircraft types, many of them rare. The visitor briefing room is actually where they briefed the USAF fighter squadrons during WWII - and hardly changed ! Last time I was there about half a dozen Spitfire fighters of all denominations flew overhead on display (including some real Mk rarities), something they regularly schedule. Well worth the trip to Cambridgeshire !

Amazingly, the one time I've seen Cecil (doing solo piano recital and poetry) was in that very locale ! He's in the UK later this year with Bill Dixon and Tony Oxley and that's one that can't be missed. -

Until very recently my immediate reaction would have been to say Sam Rivers but he's touring the UK over the next few months with two concerts in my vicinity. Hopefully I'll be at both ! -
One of our greatest ever exports to the US (thanks to Miles' visit that night to Ronnie Scotts).

Getting quite esoteric but how about the Keith Jarrett ECM 'Hymns/Spheres' (recorded on a Bavarian Baroque organ in a Bennedictine Abbey ) and also the 2LP he did of Clavichord Music. Both intriguing and strange releases, even by Jarrett's standards. I think 'Hymns/Spheres' was recorded just before the 'Sun Bear' mammoth LP set, so he was on an esoteric roll at this time... In fact I was just listening to side 1 of 'Hymns/Spheres' this morning and the room started resonating with volume cranked up when he pulled out the stops

This was the Gillespie 'Perceptions' album, released as part of the Verve Elite Edition series and which went OOP pretty quickly. Definitely fits into the remit of this thread - very much a 'third stream' feel to the arrangements with lots of heavy brass. Hindemith and Copland influence to some of the orchestral sounds. Incidentally, a couple of the tracks were revisited by JJ in his 'The Brass Orchestra' CD for Verve and Joe Wilder is featured on both albums. I think the JJ also possibly qualifies for inclusion in this thread too.

There's one currently on with a 'buy it now' option on the flight deck of the USS Intrepid. NYC seller but the condition is only VG, fuselage a bit rusty. There's also a rare UK import with seller location of Imperial War Museum Duxford..

Yes, this is a great box combo, John. Just listening to it the other day. I think mine cost the equivalent of £10 or thereabouts in Brussels. Timeless label 3CD box set. The Vanguard sessions are just as enjoyable. Listening to the Mosaic LP version is almost like being in the front row of that gig (having witnessed the same band live at Ronnie's about 6 weeks previously I can say that hand on heart).

I've got vinyls of both of these, UK originals with the SAPCOR numbers. Both are very nice - typical MJQ refined sessions of the period and absolutely no psychadelia/Beatles influence. 'Space' has a couple of tracks with dreamy, shimmering sounds which match the title well. I think both were out on CD some years ago. They come up on ebay on occasion - often (or at least they did) fetch big bucks.
