  1. 'Fraid so - In my dreams, I guess....
  2. 'It don't Mean A Thing' must be Elvin's favourite tune. He's played it just about every time I've seen it live - usually on brushes with the vocal accompaniment ! Sure hope he makes his annual trip later this year over to Ronnie Scotts. This year, I'll make sure I'm in attendance (last time he had Sonny Fortune in tow so a double treat !)
  3. Copy of Tina Brooks 'True Blue' 47/W 63rd deep groove edition in the local Oxfam shop. £15 - in near mint too !
  4. The bit about the Mosaic sets is just too much of an ultra wind-up for the congiscenti so I think (hope) you're right.. B)
  5. Damn.... 'The end of the World is nigh..' I've yet to hear the whole of 'Passing Ships' and 'The Flip' thanks to these damned Euro- Conns. I had thought of the US market as a bastion of sanity to date. How wrong....
  6. Soul - it's definitely the coolest version I've ever heard of that tune. Listening also to 'Boogaloo' over the past few days. One of my favourite of the 'Rare Grooves'..
  7. I just got hold of a copy of 'Let Em Roll' this weekend, as a US import at Tower. This one is so hot it's radioactive - can't believe I held off so long before hearing it. Fantastic stuff once again from Big John and Grant !
  8. Anyone know if '4 Men With Beards' will be putting out 180g vinyl of 'The Phantom', in the same way that they did with the Eddie Gales?
  9. You should definitely try to go. Elvin is an extremely nice guy in person and all of the shows of his that I have attended over the years have invariably been pleasant experiences, irrespective of his legendary status. And no Jimmy Smith-like dissin' of the audience here ! B)
  10. If I remember rightly, he is shown on this film looking at a Francis Wolff print of himself. Maybe this was one of the scenes filmed in the back of Mosaic's warehouse (with endless racks of black boxes in the background)?
  11. I remember seeing a BBC TV broadcast from the Rainbow around 74/75 of Billy Cobham's band. I think this was some of the material from the 'Shabbaz' album. Glenn Ferris on trombone, and Randy Brecker on trumpet, in the lineup.
  12. No way ! - I even hand out white gloves for anyone who wants to inspect the booklets..
  13. This is just the excuse I need to book a transatlantic flight to NYC ! B)
  14. Miles/Trane on the Mosaic, Heavyweight Champion on vinyl and the VV and Impulse sets on CD. Can't get enough of it ..
  15. With regard to Gerald Wilson recording the commercial stuff on 'California Soul' I think I read somewhere (might even have been in the Mosaic booklet) that it was hearing some of these tunes played on a gramaphone by his daughter that influenced him to do the album of covers. The resulting album is not without faults but for me at least is an endearing 'period piece'. As for the Woody Shaw - I have to say that this is one of my very favourite Mosaics. It was one of the first I bought from them and gets lots of airplay. A hugely vital collection of some of Woody's finest work.
  16. I'm going to have to find some way of getting out to NYC this year just to see this Tolliver Big Band. The frustration of it !

    Renee Rosnes

Great work from her too on JJ Johnson's 'The Brass Orchestra', where her early classical training is clearly apparent. B)
  18. I tend to keep the BN Lps together - Lex/4763/NYUSA pressings with pride of place, Kings/Toshibas next and then the Pathe Marconis hidden off in the sidelines (not to mention at least one 'Applause' frisbee which should be marked 'condemned') . Also have a separate breakout area for the Impulses. I also have a bit of a separate area for West Coast Jazz. The one artist who gets his own row of a record rack is Miles Davis, otherwise chaos reigns when it comes to ordering !

    Renee Rosnes

She has great touch and sound on the piano. Check out the new Gerald Wilson 'New York Big Band' CD which features Renee on about half of the tracks and she sounds totally at home in Gerald's arrangements. Saw her some years ago in one of JJ Johnson's last quintets - JJ always did have really great taste in his piano players. I believe that she was born in Western Canada (was it Saskatoon?) and was very active on the Canadian scene before moving to the US.
  20. There's a Tempo LP by Jimmy Deuchar called 'Pal Jimmy' that would be a good candidate. Has Tubby Hayes in the lineup and I believe only about 200 copies were ever produced. Saw one recently go for £1200
  21. That was a mighty fine list of Mosaics on the spreadsheet, Hal. Your dad had exquisite taste..
  22. Sirota's previous releases on Naim are well worth a listen - I particularly like 'Propaganda' with its wide-open, sophisticated sounds and hint of Mingus influences throughout. Ted is also being featured on another board's forum (which shall be nameless here ) and offering to respond to questions posted. Cool stuff ! -_-
  23. I like the John Patton very much indeed, although there seem to be some mixed opinions out there concerning sound quality of parts of this set.
  24. With regard to the Hubbard album, what I find shocking is that this one didn't even reach it's reserve !! I wonder what that could have been - $500 perhaps? Admittedly this is a nice copy of the deep-groove original but still a crazy price. Or maybe it's just little-ol' cheapskate me?
  25. I believe it was also the last recording Morgan and Shorter made together as a front line. A great way to end one of jazz's greatest partnerships. :rsmile:
