  1. Time to hit the button marked 'buy'...
  2. Amazing what can be done with a wide-angle lens. Didn't recognise the Fairport album cover, I had mistakenly assumed that this was one of your family album shots ..
  3. ..... and just when you thought you had seen the glimmer of light at the end of the tunnel.....along comes mention of the 'Jazz In Paris' 75CD set and its smaller 25CD brethren. Not to mention the two impending OOP Mosaics.. Time to go down to the blood bank....
  4. That's the one - thanks for this, Jim. Next time I'm in this particular shop I'll have to get the LP. Yet more $ to shell out ...
  5. Anyone have any comments about one of these OJCs by a trumpeter named Don Sleet? I don't know if it's on CD but it came out in vinyl back in the 80s. What raised my interest level considerably was the presence of Wynton Kelly's trio in the lineup. Is it worth having?
  6. DrJ - you're in for a real treat ! Get your order in for the Elvin Mosaic forthwith or (if you have a turntable) look out for the Elvin 'Prime Element' twofer LP set. It's a cracking session with Lee plus George Coleman, Frank Foster, Wilbur Little and Candido. Leads off with a really nice and unusually pianoless version of 'Inner Space' and there's another track called 'Champagne Baby' that grooves like the proverbial clappers with great interaction between Elvin and Candido . All in all one of my fave Lee (and Elvin) sessions and nicely recorded by Van the Man too. This one is a prime candidate for the 'Future Conn' list IMO
  7. Having just listened to this material for the first time, I can see..uh...hear why! Excellent... I'm always stunned by the high-note work of Cat Anderson on this disk, he doesn't miss anything that he tries for. Some of those exotic rhythmns the Duke puts down are also a killer. I feel the Mosaic $ creeping out of my pocket real fast ...
  8. Is that Salisbury cathedral at the back of your avitar, Bev?
  9. Maybe I also need to give the New Orleans box a hearing. As per previous comments, too bad there are no sound samples to check out.
  10. I always wondered why those things always smelt of one-week old bad socks when they are served on 'Robbie Burns' night. Just as well that they are served with 'tatties and neeps' to make the taste half-way palatable..
  11. Interesting to hear that, Jazzmoose. I've hesitated on the Atlantic New Orleans set for exactly that reason. I'll probably take the plunge though on the Duke Reprise set as what I've heard of the albums I really like a lot. 'Afro Bossa' is probably my favourite Ellington album, period.
  12. I have a friend from Scotland who actually cooks these things. Serves 'Iron Bru' as a drink to go with it too ..
  13. It's always 'View New Posts' for me, followed by 'Today's Active Topics' when I have exhausted the in box. Next port of call is then usually 'The Vinyl Frontier' for all things 12"...
  14. I think Lee's muted solo on 'Once I Loved' on that 'Inner Space' session with Elvin Jones included in the Elvin Complete Blue Note Mosaic set comes in this category too. Lee times his phrasing on this one to near perfection.
  15. It would be nice if these guys also produced a high quality sweat-shirt version of these titles. In high quality cotton.
  16. A 'Point of Departure' to wear on the beach would be beyond cool !!!
  17. Thanks for this. I noticed that some of the lesser-known Liberty era releases don't seem to appear in the 7x7 book. Agree with you re: the 10 inch covers (I would have liked to see the Lou Mecca, Gil Melles etc.). Maybe the lack of a 'designer' slant has something to do with this?
  18. Count me in for a 'Unity'. I hope they do a 'Turnaround' and a 'No Room For Squares' too. That would be the biz !
  19. aaaaaaaggggh........Tony Blackburn.....what's he doing lowering the tone on this otherwise immaculate board?
  20. No Problem ubu ! And thanks for reminding me of what a jackass I am for not picking up the Farmer 'Boomers' East Wind vinyl. Dohhhh..
  21. ubu - heres the AMG link for you for the 'At Boomers' CD version on Japanese East Wind. There's a volume 2 of this also. At Boomers Vol 1 There's also a set of Cedar Walton trio releases on Muse with this title, so easy to confuse.. Cedar Walton Boomers Vol 1 East Wind is a high quality Japanese label who released quite a bit of stuff by Farmer, Clifford Jordan, Cedar Walton and others during the 1970s, some of which was direct-to-disk ('The Pentagon' for example). Most of these were released domestically in the US by Inner City. Farmer recommendations on East Wind include 'The Summer Knows', 'To Duke With Love' and 'Yesterdays Thoughts'. They are all superbly recorded and mastered, in typical Japanese style.
  22. I'll look forward to giving this one another spin when I get back to my turntable. Good choice of media available between the NY USA pressing and the Mosaic. One of my all-time faves..
  23. Is there much more additional material in the two 12x12 books that is not included in the 7x7? I have the 7x7 (bought at an HMV store recently at half price) but not the big volumes, which I really regret not picking up when they first came out. Ditto 'California Cool'
