  1. I can only assume that the definition of 'VG' in this seller's book is 'veritable garbage' ....

    Oct conns?

:rsmile: I have to agree. Still, this is a really excellent line up of new Conns from BN. My choice will have to be the Hill, although I'm curious to hear Mobley's 'The Flip' in full. I have several of the tracks on compilations but have never heard the full session. The rest I have in vinyl, which is my preference anyway, in one form or another. 'Fuchsia' is absolutely superb, so good that I've sought out a copy of the original ST-84184 release, although it also sounds pretty damn good too on the Mosaic vinyl. I've just been spinning the Toshiba vinyl of 'Bossa Nova Bacchanal' by Rouse. Nothing earth shattering but a nice session in the style of the Getz/Gilberto collaborations of that time, Kenny Burrell also plays nicely on this one - there's a second guitarist too by name of Chauncey 'Lord' Westbrook. If you want a laid back, groovin' selection, you won't be disappointed. Sort of reminds me of Ike Quebec's 'Soul Samba' in terms of feel but definitely with an eye to commercial sales potential. 'Sonic Boom' and 'Mother Ship' I also have in vinyl and I'm sure that both of these will score highly with the board membership. You can't go wrong IMO with late-BN Larry Young and the Morgan has some very nice interaction with David Newman, plus the usual fireworks from Billy Higgins. Nice stuff.
  3. I find that these are always good to stick in the washroom for a bit of 'inspirational (but potentially expensive) light reading'
  4. Hi wolff - thanks for pointing this out, I hadn't previously noticed the Van Gelder imprint on the Mingus Candid. I've had a look at my earlier Mosaic LP sets and in most cases it's either 'Mastered By EMI' or 'Mastered By Capitol'. Not sure if any of the others have the Van Gelder imprint.
  5. Would you believe it - just as this is anounced I stumble across a pristine mint 6-eye copy of the original Columbia C2S820 double album in the 2nd hand vinyl racks.... Won't stop me buying the Mosaic though. :rsmile:
  6. How about this one for the dedicated Miles Fanatic .... http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewI...&category=34292 (use in the family room at your peril ..... )
  7. 'The Inflated Tear' - Kirk's all-round best and most balanced date, IMO 'The Jaki Byard Experience' on OJC - this one is absolutely incendiary ! 'Rip, Rig and Panic' - difficult to choose between this and 'Tear'. Another brilliant date. I'm also very fond of 'Slightly Latin' and 'Meets the Benny Golson Orchestra' on the (essential) Mercury box. Both of these are somewhat under-rated. :rsmile:
  8. I'm extremely partial to Clifford Jordan's work on two early Cedar Walton Prestiges - 'Spectrum' and 'The Electric Boogaloo Song'. Jordan and Walton always could deliver the goods. Also recommended is the Hep recording with Howard McGhee's Big Band, 'Cookin' Time', with a great version of Jordan's 'Highest Mountain'. Another vote too for 'The Pentagon'. A particularly nice listen on vinyl direct-to-disk in the original East Wind version ! B)
  9. My Byrd/Adams set is definitely unhinged too (pardon the expression)...
  10. Very bad news for jazz but, thankfully, Benny had a great innings and left a wonderful legacy. I'll remember him as I saw him about 7 years ago at an LA community open-air jazz fest (in fact a tribute to the late Mr Gillespie), a most distinguished looking gent impeccably turned out in blue blazer, friendly, approachable, chatting to all and sundry and MCing for some of the performances. A truly class act and distinguished ambassador for jazz.
  11. Thanks - that's got me tempted !
  12. What's this album like, Rooster? I've recently seen a good vinyl copy and have it in my sights ...
  13. The Columbia double-LP by these two (with Harry Edison and Clark Terry) is also a very under-rated gem. 30th St Studio acoustics also add to the attraction of this one ! B)
  14. Drove past there just last Saturday John ! Check out the 'Smiths Arms' pub just down the road in Godmanstone. One of my faves
  15. Hey that's it !!! If you got to Stonehenge you'll see that the stone circles are surrounded (out to a radius of a mile or so) by bronze-age round and disk barrows, huge mounds of earth which were supposedly the burial grounds of the ancient Briton warrior/leader class. So Maybe when a Mosaic set goes out of its licence period, Scott and co. do a ceremonial procession in druid kit along the ceremonial highway and out to the barrow mounds, where they bury the sets alongside the bones of the elders. It's 20 miles down the road from me so I'm on my way with the excavator ...
  16. Make sure too that you check out those nice blue-label Blue Note Reissue Series sets expertly compiled by Mr Cuscuna. Many hours of pleasure over the years from those and still the only way (to the best of my knowledge) to hear Andrew Hill plus strings directed by Kermit Moore on 'One For One'.
  17. Most of the vinyl OJCs that I've bought sound great. Farmer's 'PhD', 'Cedar Walton Plays Cedar Walton', the Pat Martinos and the Frank Morgan Contemporarys are all well up to scratch. Be sure to pick up the Gil Melle 'Primitive Modern' and 'Quadrama' pressings too if you see them. Both of these on OJC are highly recommended !
  18. Gary Numan's just back in the UK charts too ....... after a gap of about 20 years since his last chart single
  19. I can remember sitting through the very first episode of this when it first came out on the box (ITV) but never quite made it through the first hour before falling asleep, too much geordie patois. Maybe I should check out a rerun. James Bolam was on lots of TV at the time, specialising in Geordie character parts ('The Likely Lads', 'Return of the Likely Lads', 'When the Boooooot Comes In' etc). Didn't 'Tutti Frutti' feature Robbie Coltrane, aka 'Hagrid' ??
  20. ..... but don't mention that the Larry Young, Basie Roulettes, Shorty Rogers, Grant Green, Blakey, Buddy de Franco, Desmond/Hall, Andrew Hill, Lee Morgan, etc etc Mosaics have been and gone ... Still time to pounce on the Four Freshmen set though ....
  21. Not sure if you are re-ferring to the CD of 'Re-Entry'.... If so, then Joel Dorn's notes to the 1994 Ram Records release confirm that the tracks were recorded by Alan Grant from live broadcasts that he hosted in 1965/66. Horace agreed to have these re-released on Ram after they were initially put out on his Silveto Records label..
  22. Not to forget the Hep vinyl either. The Howard McGhee 'Cookin' Time' is really excellent. Stellar big band recording from the mid-60s, from a time when McGhee was just coming back into prominence and somehow managing to rehearse a big band which included some of the best NYC musicians of this era. Fine solo work included not only from Howard (whio is really on form) but also from Clifford Jordan, in particular featured on his own arrangement of 'Highest Mountain'. Recommended ! :rsmile:
  23. Not a good CD to pull out of the racks early in the morning after a heavy night on the pop .......
