That's a relief - I thought I was totally and utterly losing it !

"Gloster" in this part of the world .... Good cathedral, interesting locals, not a lot else ...
-
The Linn Axis can be a good second-hand buy. Particularly if you can find one with the Akito arm, as supplied on LP12s ....
-
It would have been Henry 'Red' but - in his absence - it's between Roy and Buck. Roy by a gnat's whisker ... B) 'Hot Lips' Page would figure well up there on my list too ..

Don't remember Asman's, John. Most of my searching around that time was at Mole and Honest Jon's - but of course as a mere impoverished student I could never afford those lovely King and Toshiba imports that were forever taunting me from the racks. It was the bargain cut-out bins for me ! Talking about test pressings, I noticed one on ebay a while back for Alan Shorter's 'Orgasm', on Verve. The seller was from Argentina - I really should have taken the plunge on that one but the purchase looked a bit messy ... Seller from Argentina - couldn't have been Gato, could it ?

There's the CD set up on ebay right now ...

No problems at all to my ears with the 'Byrd/Adams'. A mighty fine set

Can just about pick out the alto but it's marginal (man, this one is driving me crazy ). It's probably a bit easier to differentiate on headphones - admittedly not helped by Joe H's higher register unison work. Unfortunately, my all-Naim set up doesn't allow such 'heretic sonic transgressions' as headphones so I'm left with the speakers. Will have to look out for the JRVG for the bonus tracks. Suspect that the Toshiba LP version would be a straight copy of the original session tracks but if I ever see it I'll probably snag it anyway (perhaps Hiroshi can help...) I'll hang on to my McMaster and use my imagination to conjure up the alto ..

I wish I'd checked out those 2nd hand London bins 20 years ago John with the same manic scrutiny that I do these days. Sadly, I don't think there's too much chance of picking up more Andrew Hill test pressings anytime soon. Truly a wonderful find ! Let me guess - Colletts maybe? Mole? Honest Jon's? PS - It's entirely possible that I might have skipped over this and other such gems in the racks, totally oblivious !

Late, Wow - extremely well spotted !! I've given my old CD several more spins, put my head to the left speaker and still can't clearly differentiate Hosea on alto. We are talking fairly top end CD player and speakers here, too. Having said that, the ensembles are somewhat 'broader' than would be expected from a quintet session (I'd always put this down to Joe Henderson's excellent harmonic creativity ..) I guess I can put the blame either on my own hearing or (more likely) the lack of definition in the McMaster CD version Time for me to hunt this one down on vinyl and make a plant pot holder from the McMaster ! Nevertheless - great session.. Ever thought of signing up for the Navy as a sonar operator ?

Just had a quick listen to my copy of the original 'Blue Spirits' release, CDP7 46545 2. Joe is indeed on the right channel, very distinctive. Can't pick out any alto on the left but Joe is playing his harmonies on the lead quite high - could be mistaken for an alto. Maybe what is being observed is leakage from the right channel? Sounds like a quintet session on the basis of the original CD (which was a McMaster ).

I saw Teddy live a couple of years ago in NYC (front row again too) in a quartet backed by John Hick's trio and he was absolutely smoking. Very many NYC heads were turned in the club that night and the goods were delivered with aplomb, in particular a stellar performance of his classic 'Sunset Eyes'. The level of performance and drive was such that news of his recent death came as a particular shock for me. I'll certainly pick up this CD when I see a copy ..

Most interesting/favorite 'Andrew Hill' Blue Note
sidewinder replied to Rooster_Ties's topic in Artists
Late - welcome to the Board! You are absolutely right re: Rivers being well matched to Hill's music. There is a 'serpentine' quality to River's style - probing, checking all angles, taking left field, 'out but not that far out' - that allows him to exploit the many twists and turns in Hill's compositions. -
I can just picture it. 20 years from now 'Van the Man' will make the cut for the latest batch of Conns. Heck, maybe the guys at Stanford will give him his own 'Complete Blue Note Native Irish Recordings of' Mosaic set !!

That should just about cover the Commodores ....
-
He's also a featured soloist on Thad & Mel' s 'New Life' and 'Live in Munich', both on Horizon. I'll add them to the listening pile ..

Miles Davis - Complete Montreux (20CD box)
sidewinder replied to Claude's topic in Mosaic and other box sets...
With so many good Mosaics around at the moment, this one comes well down the list, just behind the 'Four Freshmen' box .. :rsmile: -
For some early Charles Llloyd on video, check out also the BBC 'Jazz 625' performance of the Cannonball Adderley sextet. Lloyd is nicely featured on flute on his own 'Song My Lady Sings'. Worth searching for ! :rsmile:

I prefer the early stuff on Atlantic, particularly the one called 'The Flowering of the Original Charles Llloyd Quartet in Concert' with the period flower-power/afro hair cover design. This was a particularly powerful group, with Jarrett, Cecil McBee and Jack DeJohnette. Particular highlights are a storming version of 'Wilpans' (check out Jarrett's solo) and a very nice performance of 'Speak Low'.
-
Congrats Marcus - now that you have completed the Conn assignment, your next mission (should you choose to accept it) is to compile a full Mosaic library, including the OOPs ! Just kidding, of course ..

Upcoming AOTW - The Quintet at Massey Hall
sidewinder replied to Alexander Hawkins's topic in Album Of The Week
The Powell material is also on the Mingus 'Complete Debut Recordings' CD set - and very nicely presented, as are the quintet tracks. I'll try to give the Vogue 'Quintet of the Year' LP a spin today in memory of this event, and maybe delve also into the Hayden book. Interesting picture in the book with Mingus playing the piano after the concert, apparently waiting for payment whilst they were counting the dosh .... potentially menacing if you were the fan counting the proceeds and discovered there was a big shortfall, then having to tell Mingus that this is the case to his face. I bet there weren't many takers for that 'honour' ! It wil be interesting to compare the overdub versions on the Vogue LP with the 'clean' versions on the Debut set ! -
Just playing a few tracks off this LP behemoth earlier today. Was wondering at the time just how long it would be before OOP. A cracking set, in my opinion. Amazing how Maynard could make a mid-sized band sound much bigger than it really was, basically by crafty arranging tricks. The music I was specifically listening to was the Xmas material and the dance tracks. They were even able to get this unlikely material to swing... B) Oh - the booklet for this one is also a very fine read. Highly recommended for any big band fans who also liked the Basie sets, Thad & Mel and the Gerald Wilson. And $80 sales of the CD version of this set in 2nd hand stores shouldn't be allowed. How come there are none of these stores around when I'm looking?

Some Book Remainders
sidewinder replied to Simon Weil's topic in Jazz In Print - Periodicals, Books, Newspapers, etc...
Anyone know if the Clifford Brown book is worth picking up (and does it add much additional material to what is given in the Mosaic set booklet) ? -
If you don't yet have any Bill Evans in your collection Andy, having the 'Complete Riverside' as your intro to this wonderful player is like hitting the jackpot with your first lotto ticket. Enjoy !
