  1. Yes, Gilles Peterson organised it and did the concert intro. A full house too ! They played Harper’s ‘Capra Black’ and Cowell’s ‘Effi’ and a number by McBee which I can’t recall. Tolliver’s ‘On The Nile’ too I think.
  2. For sure - in a world where copies of Hank Jones ‘Happenings’ have asking price $2.5k !
  3. My copy bought for the grand sum of £2 at Mole and with about half an inch of dust on it !
  4. To complete the lineup, Stanley Cowell was on piano, Cecil McBee on bass and Alvin Queen on drums ! The first part of the concert featured Tolliver and co., then Jean Carn joined them. There was also a projection show going on in the background featuring drawings of various Strata-East LP art. I bought one of the concert posters based on this theme but have yet to frame it up.
  5. Personally, I would have said 4 stars minimum. A very good performance by Shirley Scott IMO, much more in the ‘Big John Patton’ style than her earlier work - which works for me. Heavy, virtuosic and truly original stuff. RIP Keith Tippett.
  6. A measly 2 stars in ‘Jazzwise’. Not sure I was listening to the same record..
  7. Country of manufacture China? Just checked my (now ageing) box and there’s mention of that. Great that your set has arrived. Over the years I have found it a fascinating box to delve into.
  8. Other than having the ‘Coral Keys’ on vinyl and passing acquaintance with the Doug/Jean Carn LPs, I’m not too familiar with this label. Some of it can sound a little dated these days but there’s no doubting the quality of much of the music. Pleased to find that much of it is on Spotify so I’m having a bit of a Black Jazz binge. Jean Carn made a good appearance at the London Barbican concert some years ago, along with Charles Tolliver and Billy Harper in the line up. An excellent show.
  9. This one -
  10. Morgan, stereo. Incredible album.
  11. Stop Press... According to Jazzwise, looks like ‘Windmill Tilter’ is about to get a first vinyl reissue from Decca along with an avalanche of other goodies - the two New Jazz Orchestra albums, Mike Taylor ‘Pendulum’, Namislowski’s ‘Lola’ and ‘Deep Dark Blue Centre’ (did they find Graham’s stereo master, he asks with interest..). This lot is apparently just for starters. Initially all of these will be out in July in digital media apparently, with vinyl and CD to follow. Hopefully the vinyl will be courtesy of Gearbox. Checking the date and it is not April 1.
  12. Probably July 1972.. https://books.google.co.uk/books?id=iciAYIIRG5YC&pg=PA214&lpg=PA214&dq=ramblin+jack+elliott+david+amram+toronto&source=bl&ots=vnID6scvqa&sig=ACfU3U2af2EQeZhQOxUcv8lajKh29lZNTA&hl=en&sa=X&ved=2ahUKEwiwheSth6rqAhW8QEEAHbixDV0Q6AEwA3oECAkQAQ#v=onepage&q=ramblin jack elliott david amram toronto&f=false
  13. I’ve got the earlier Sawano reissue of that one.
  14. A late, lamented Toronto live jazz establishment. Recorded by board member Ted O’Reilly. One of the great things about that place was that you could invariably get a seat or standing room on busy gigs, without reservation.
  15. Thanks - have a few of those, sound is usually pretty good.
  16. One that I don’t play anywhere near enough !
  17. Yes, the duplicate CDs both state CD 1.
  18. Still on disk 1. It is so good, it is on repeat play, along with Vol 2 of Jim Hall. Superlative !
  19. Interesting to read that Rick Margitza has been gigging there regularly.
  20. Well deserved ! I recently watched that short 15 min semi animated bio of Oscar put out by the NFB of Canada, on Amazon Prime. A nice tribute.
