  1. I'm planning on going to see it this afternoon. It's had some pretty good write ups over here, particularly with regard to Don Cheadle's performance. I'm assuming something of an action/blaxploitation/comedy flick and not a verbatim Miles bio so expectations set realistically, hopefully. I'm wondering if that Dave Braden character might be remotely modelled on Eric Nisensen (think it was he) who interviewed Miles at the end of the recluse period, wanted to help him with his autobio and ended up 'facilitating' as a favour to Davis. Maybe they also threw the Scots connection into the mix because of Ian Carr... Good !
  2. Interesting - maybe I just got a bad one...
  3. I would have said 'Nut-House' but that would have been mean to nuts..
  4. Gene used to make regular Summer trips to Edmonton, Alberta around Jazz Festival time and it as always a pleasure to see/hear him in various gigs, some quite impromptu in hotel lobbies and the like. I'm not sure what the connection was with Edmonton - friends presumably - but his visits were appreciated (not sure if they are still a regular thing).
  5. Blakey (not the drummer..) Stan Olive
  6. Of course, 'Sparton' not 'Spartans'. Pressed in Sparta would have been appropriate though..
  7. Yeah - shame really as the sleeves look like the orig. apart from the 'Made In Canada' in the gatefold. I wonder if the came pressing plant (Toronto?) did the Canadian Pacific Jazz/World Pacifics?
  8. The couple of times I found myself in there it as like entering an asylum.. Glad you had a great day !
  9. I've got copies of both of those Coltrane HMVs that Clunky mentions. They sound very good but not necessarily to my mind superior to the original Impulses. Maybe condition has something to do with it, as old Impulses over here can sometimes be pretty beat up. The worst Impulses are those Canadian Spartans - garbage ! Original orange and red/black (including later pressings) usually sound pretty good to me. The red/blacks can often be really good value.
  10. Have a great one and hope all's well !
  11. Don Wilkerson 'Preach Brother !' (BN NY USA stereo, ear)
  12. Happy Birthday Flurin ! Is that how the phrase 'to boogie' originated?
  13. Yep, they are 'around' overseas. I picked one of the Joe Harriotts up in Tokyo. Just noticed that Dusty has a fair listing of them.
  14. 'The New Miles Davis Quintet' (Prestige Bergenfield DG mono). Labels of my copy say 'New Miles Davis Quartet'
  15. Pat Martino 'El Hombre' (OJC). Signed by Pat.
  16. Osborne Mr Asbo Waynetta Slob
  17. I like his recordings with Joe Henderson and also the Buddy Rich recordings he did. RIP.
  18. I'd seen the notification on this one John but unfortunately work gets in the way - otherwise I would have been down there for sure ! Give it a few years after I am retired and it will be a different story. Should be great..

  21. Kevin - these are regular releases put out by Gearbox Records in London, who specialise in high quality jazz vinyl pressings, mainly of newly unearthed archive material. These guys have their own Scully lathe and Westrex amps and cutting heads so they are well and truly geared up. They are a fabulous little outfit and their pressings (which are limited) deserve to be heard over the pond. They have their own website for direct sales. The store I picked them up from refuses to stock the RSD pressings as they are generally crap !
  22. Just the fact that they put a new recording out by Lonnie Smith after what must be 40+ years after the last one (Drives?) is cause for credit and kudos. Really must pick up a copy of that one.
  23. A whole batch of Gearbox releases picked up today at Record Store Day, with a nice surprise discount - Michael Garrick 'Silhouette' and 'Prelude to Heart Is A Lotus' Tubby Hayes 'Live at The Hopbine 1968 Vol1: The Syndicate' and ' Seven Steps To Heaven: Live at the Hopbine 1972 Vol 2' Real classy releases.
  24. Chico Hamilton 'El Chico' (Speakers Corner)
  25. Cedar Walton 'Eastern Rebellion 2' (Timeless) Just re-levelled my deck. It was sounding a bit off and I was a bit worried that I might have needed a new cartridge (10 years +). I needn't have worried...
