  3. Kevin - these are regular releases put out by Gearbox Records in London, who specialise in high quality jazz vinyl pressings, mainly of newly unearthed archive material. These guys have their own Scully lathe and Westrex amps and cutting heads so they are well and truly geared up. They are a fabulous little outfit and their pressings (which are limited) deserve to be heard over the pond. They have their own website for direct sales. The store I picked them up from refuses to stock the RSD pressings as they are generally crap !
  4. Just the fact that they put a new recording out by Lonnie Smith after what must be 40+ years after the last one (Drives?) is cause for credit and kudos. Really must pick up a copy of that one.
  5. A whole batch of Gearbox releases picked up today at Record Store Day, with a nice surprise discount - Michael Garrick 'Silhouette' and 'Prelude to Heart Is A Lotus' Tubby Hayes 'Live at The Hopbine 1968 Vol1: The Syndicate' and ' Seven Steps To Heaven: Live at the Hopbine 1972 Vol 2' Real classy releases.
  6. Chico Hamilton 'El Chico' (Speakers Corner)
  7. Cedar Walton 'Eastern Rebellion 2' (Timeless) Just re-levelled my deck. It was sounding a bit off and I was a bit worried that I might have needed a new cartridge (10 years +). I needn't have worried...
  8. This set is a veritable cornucopia - recommended !
  9. Unusual oversight by Oxfam - they usually mark stuff up to top price. Nice one !
  10. Those pebbles look suspiciously as if they might have been acquired from Chesil Beach, Dorset..Jurassic Coast.
  11. That must be the first mention of 'jazz' in The Gramophone for at least 3 decades..
  12. Worth it just for the wording of the title (intentional?) and the cover art. I think a past edition of Jazzwise featured it in its 'non-PC' feature vintage LP - I wonder why? Tony Lee Trio at the Bulls Head, Barnes is what it says on the tin and that is exactly what you get. It is indeed a rare album. Needless to say my copy cost a wee bit more than £4. Where are you and Mark getting your LPs from - Ali Baba's cave?
  13. Don Cheadle interviewed on UK prime time BBC1 tonight on that inane 'One Show' programme. Should do no harm for the public exposure of the whole thing over here !
  14. My favourite playing by both is on 'Mingus Moves' on Atlantic. A very under-rated album IMO. In my Toronto days there was a club over there that had a very interesting oil portrait of Pullen at the piano for sale. Would have loved to have got it but at several grand $ it was pretty well out of range.
  15. I'm looking forward to it . With 'Frelon Brun' on the soundtrack there are grounds for optimism !
  16. Those Savoy/Arista 2LP sets sound very good and can usually be picked up for not much money. 'Gong' and 'Morning' are both recommended.
  17. Saw them leave as well, count myself very fortunate to have done so. It was around the time that 'Don't Lose Control' on Timeless came out and they play material from that one I recall. Wim Wigt used to bring them over to Europe.
  18. Are those the Dead Sea Scrolls in the box?
  19. Brewhouse Theatre, Taunton ! Bastion of the arts in the epicentre of cider-swigging yokels..
  20. Sad news and my condolences. Reading through that tribute it sounds as though he had a very happy second marriage over the past 20 years. Will be spinning the album recorded with Alan Shorter later today - RIP.
  21. Wayne Shorter 'The Soothsayer' (King) Lou Donaldson ' Sweet Slumber' (King) - arranged by Wayne
  22. I've got a US Atlantic mono original - don't recall it being that bad but will dig it out today and check. Those '3000 Yen' CDs are the dog's boll*x..
  23. Yep, picked up a spare set of the CDs last night, they were on sale for £10 which was a good deal. PIcture of the band thrown in as well ! Criminal that it wasn't better attended - hope they get a great reception in London.
