  1. Yep, I'll be going for a replacement of my (now vintage) XX-2.
  2. Sadly, I guess so. Nobody under 40ish at my viewing. I'm putting it down to the fact that it was a Sunday afternoon in a provincial town but even so - a sad indication of the demographics. Shame, as there's much in this film that the younger crowd can enjoy..
  3. Just Scottish, English and Japanese for me. Have decided new cart definitely now needed (ouch) plus a tune up/fettling and service for the Scottish gizmo by my trusted guru so it's CDs only now for a few weeks plus bread and jam for meals. Should be awesome once it's back though !
  4. Strong continuity from 'Westering Home' to the likes of 'The Amazing Adventures of Simon Simon'. Very strong Devonian and maritime folk influence on 'Westering..'
  5. Having just seen it (audience of 6 and one departed half way through..) I have to say - I really liked it ! Don Cheadle's performance first rate - particularly as the later Miles. The early scenes in the brownstone with the cockroaches scuttling around can't have been too far from the truth ! If there was one weakness maybe it was the recreated earlier 50s and 60s scenes, which didn't have quite the narrative and flow of the 1979 bit. I appreciate though that a romantic narrative does help with box office. I did particularly enjoy the (background, on the TV) recreation of the 1975 Osaka Hall concert right at the beginning and the telephone chat with Phil Shaap. Spot on ! The soundtrack was the real standout. Couldn't have done a better job myself with the selection of music to intersperse with the 'action'. Really liked the ending too featuring Herbie and Wayne ! Is it only me or did that slimy Columbia exec who nicked the rehearsal tape look a bit like Mel Lewis?...
  6. Have both of these on Island vinyl and agree that they are good - nice to see them available on CD. 'Morning Glory' in particular is a gem.
  7. I'm planning on going to see it this afternoon. It's had some pretty good write ups over here, particularly with regard to Don Cheadle's performance. I'm assuming something of an action/blaxploitation/comedy flick and not a verbatim Miles bio so expectations set realistically, hopefully. I'm wondering if that Dave Braden character might be remotely modelled on Eric Nisensen (think it was he) who interviewed Miles at the end of the recluse period, wanted to help him with his autobio and ended up 'facilitating' as a favour to Davis. Maybe they also threw the Scots connection into the mix because of Ian Carr... Good !
  8. Interesting - maybe I just got a bad one...
  9. I would have said 'Nut-House' but that would have been mean to nuts..
  10. Gene used to make regular Summer trips to Edmonton, Alberta around Jazz Festival time and it as always a pleasure to see/hear him in various gigs, some quite impromptu in hotel lobbies and the like. I'm not sure what the connection was with Edmonton - friends presumably - but his visits were appreciated (not sure if they are still a regular thing).
  11. Blakey (not the drummer..) Stan Olive
  12. Of course, 'Sparton' not 'Spartans'. Pressed in Sparta would have been appropriate though..
  13. Yeah - shame really as the sleeves look like the orig. apart from the 'Made In Canada' in the gatefold. I wonder if the came pressing plant (Toronto?) did the Canadian Pacific Jazz/World Pacifics?
  14. The couple of times I found myself in there it as like entering an asylum.. Glad you had a great day !
  15. I've got copies of both of those Coltrane HMVs that Clunky mentions. They sound very good but not necessarily to my mind superior to the original Impulses. Maybe condition has something to do with it, as old Impulses over here can sometimes be pretty beat up. The worst Impulses are those Canadian Spartans - garbage ! Original orange and red/black (including later pressings) usually sound pretty good to me. The red/blacks can often be really good value.
  16. Have a great one and hope all's well !
  17. Don Wilkerson 'Preach Brother !' (BN NY USA stereo, ear)
  18. Happy Birthday Flurin ! Is that how the phrase 'to boogie' originated?
  19. Yep, they are 'around' overseas. I picked one of the Joe Harriotts up in Tokyo. Just noticed that Dusty has a fair listing of them.
  20. 'The New Miles Davis Quintet' (Prestige Bergenfield DG mono). Labels of my copy say 'New Miles Davis Quartet'
  21. Pat Martino 'El Hombre' (OJC). Signed by Pat.
  22. Osborne Mr Asbo Waynetta Slob
  23. I like his recordings with Joe Henderson and also the Buddy Rich recordings he did. RIP.
  24. I'd seen the notification on this one John but unfortunately work gets in the way - otherwise I would have been down there for sure ! Give it a few years after I am retired and it will be a different story. Should be great..
