  4. Harold Land's 'A Lazy Afternoon' is one that comes to mind. Some beautiful playing on that one.
  5. Another fine John Fordham article has just appeared.. http://www.theguardian.com/music/2014/sep/19/kenny-wheeler-five-greatest-moments-jazz
  6. That must have been the '60th Birthday' tour. I caught the '75th' and '80th' tours but not the earlier ones, sadly.
  7. Lol Coxhill Kevin Ayers A J Ayer
  8. Not sure - it is possible that the National Sound Archive may have some of them on file. I'll really miss Kenny's Big Band, in particular - and the many fine players (Ray Warleigh, Henry Lowther, Duncan Lamont, Chris Laurence) who were always featured in it. I hope that someone keeps it going.
  9. 'BBC Jazz Club' recorded at Maida Vale and broadcast on Radio 2 on the 'Sounds of Jazz' show (Peter Clayton used to introduce it). Kenny's big band used to convene annually pretty well every year for that show in the mid-late 70s and I caught many of those broadcasts. The 'Omnibus' programme shows a rehearsal for one of them.
  10. Fine tribute to Kenny in this obit here.. http://www.theguardian.com/music/2014/sep/19/kenny-wheeler
  11. My first exposure to Kenny Wheeler was probably watching 'Mr Benn' on TV as a youngster. Then Braxton's 'New York Fall 1974'. What a jump..
  12. I did once ask Bob about this concert, and as Bertrand pointed out, there only seems to be a tape with very poor audio quality... Thanks for that.
  13. Lonnie Smith 'Turning Point' (BN Liberty blue/white)
  14. That was the one that came to mind as well. Along with 'Agharta'. There's also side 6 of 'Escalator Over The Hill'...
  15. That's pretty amazing news re: the forthcoming ECM release.
  16. This Ottawa Citizen obit has links to the 1977 BBC 'Omnibus' short documentary feature on Kenny with footage of the big band in action at Maida Vale (for the Sunday night 'Sounds of Jazz' show, 'BBC Jazz Club'). http://ottawacitizen.com/entertainment/music/jazzblog/rip-kenny-wheeler
  17. Guardian obituary already up.. http://www.theguardian.com/music/2014/sep/19/kenny-wheeler-jazz-musician-dies-aged-84
  18. I really like Baker's playing on "Jazz in the Space Age" but have not heard anything else. Recommendations? George Russell Sextet 'Ezz-thetics' (Riverside) would be my immediate recommendation for great playing by Baker, particularly on the title track.
  19. My copy of 'Windmill Tilter' is coming out later on. As is 'Music For Large and Small Ensembles' (ECM 2LP) and the Incus LP.
  20. Lost for words to read this, although he had clearly been unwell for a while based on the reports on this site. What an incredible, versatile musician and what a great soul, a huge credit to this country and to Canada over a lifetime of work. To say he will be hugely missed is putting it mildly and we were very lucky that he chose to be resident here. RIP Mr Wheeler - thank you for the music and just glad I was able to catch a good number of your concerts and just thankful that in later years the appearances over here were regular. Those birthday big band gigs in particular.
  21. Yes, it came out on Toshiba (I have it somewhere upstairs). Don't think that King ever did that one. Schema/Rearward have done the 'companion' album to that - must get hold of it !
  22. Yes, those are very good. Followed by 'The Freedom Rider' and 'Roots & Herbs'.
  23. Jackie McLean 'Bluesnik' (BN 47W6rd DG mono) Followed by - 'Jackie's Bag' (47W63rd mono)
  24. Clarke/Boland 'The Golden 8' (BN NY USA, mono)
