    Bob Berg

I caught him in 'Eastern Rebellion' at Ronnie Scotts several times. The first time must have been just after he took over the tenor role from George Coleman. The band played much of the material from the first 2 Eastern Rebellion albums (David Williams was on bass). Also saw Berg a bit later on with Miles - much more of a fusion feel to his playing in that band.
  3. Nice one Yeah this one seems to be plentiful in terms of strata east titles...don't think I spent more then $35 on my mint copy. Wish all strata east titles were more in this price ballpark!! I think mine (near mint) was about 15 Euros
  4. Nice tribute today in The Times (UK). Shame it's behind a paywall but basically stressing what a fine, decent guy Joe seems to have been.
  5. Sorry to hear this. Certainly influential in Charlie Ventura's 'Bop For The People' band in terms of the wider popularisation of bop (such as it was). RIP
  6. Absolutely !
  7. One for the Referendum...
  8. Get me to this shop.... fast !
  9. They were definitely 'in' around them. 'Street Life' would have been current - in fact I remember being in a record shop (now long gone) circa 1976 and a load of teens of both sexes digging 'Those Southern Knights' as it was given a spin on the deck. I could've been one of them. Crusaders rescued me from Heavy Rock and pointed me to some initial steps down a jazzy soul path. RIP Joe Sample The ironic thing is that the same shop had a Blue Note brown-bag US import twofer of 'The Young Rabbits' on display in the window at the time but everyone ignored that. It was in Taunton by the way - back of beyond in jazz terms.

  11. I had a similar problem John until I returned my CD player to Naim for a firmware update, which got rid of the issue. Damned annoying though !
  12. Amazing ! I wonder if VF went out to the West Coast for musical/business reasons or because of his asthma condition? I guess the London smog of the time can't have helped with that. Not that LA is much better..
  13. A Cajon transporter must have become wrecked off the South Devon coast...
  14. CDs 5 and 6 now spinning. Those latter PJ albums are really good !
  15. Have a great birthday !

  18. As a matter of coincidence I was just watching a film clip of Feldman yesterday - Jazz 625 performance with Rick Laird on bass and Ronnie Scott guesting on one number. Filmed during a short London visit in 1965. During these visits apparently, Victor Feldman hardly got a minute's break, being shuffled between gigs around London as the locals made the most of the opportunity.
  19. Sorry to hear this, RIP. I'll spin the Jazz Crusaders Mosaic today.
  20. Yes, he even plays it in the style of the barrel organs that the cockney street musicians of the time would use. Pete La Roca 'Turkish Women At The Bath' (Douglas) Garbage recording, great session..
  21. Chitinous Ensemble 'Chitinous' (Deram, stereo) Yes, good as the CDs are I always like to hear these on vinyl to appreciate the interaction and dynamism of this group. Garrick is particularly good on 'Phase III', even though he does throw in a bit of 'Maybe It's because I'm A Londoner' like a Pearly King in his first solo (only British jazz could get away with that).
  22. Probably just on second hand CDs and LPs. They crop up quite a lot on ebay.
  23. Rendell/Carr Quintet 'Phase III' (Columbia Lansdowne series, stereo) Rendell/Carr Quintet 'Change Is' (Columbia Lansdowne Series, stereo)
  24. The 'Live at the Half Note' was never that great on original vinyl anyway (very flat), so maybe the CD is the best of a bad job. Sounds like I need to pick up the Blakey, as reports on thios one seem to be consistently good.
