  1. My first exposure to Kenny Wheeler was probably watching 'Mr Benn' on TV as a youngster. Then Braxton's 'New York Fall 1974'. What a jump..
  2. I did once ask Bob about this concert, and as Bertrand pointed out, there only seems to be a tape with very poor audio quality... Thanks for that.
  3. Lonnie Smith 'Turning Point' (BN Liberty blue/white)
  4. That was the one that came to mind as well. Along with 'Agharta'. There's also side 6 of 'Escalator Over The Hill'...
  5. That's pretty amazing news re: the forthcoming ECM release.
  6. This Ottawa Citizen obit has links to the 1977 BBC 'Omnibus' short documentary feature on Kenny with footage of the big band in action at Maida Vale (for the Sunday night 'Sounds of Jazz' show, 'BBC Jazz Club'). http://ottawacitizen.com/entertainment/music/jazzblog/rip-kenny-wheeler
  7. Guardian obituary already up.. http://www.theguardian.com/music/2014/sep/19/kenny-wheeler-jazz-musician-dies-aged-84
  8. I really like Baker's playing on "Jazz in the Space Age" but have not heard anything else. Recommendations? George Russell Sextet 'Ezz-thetics' (Riverside) would be my immediate recommendation for great playing by Baker, particularly on the title track.
  9. My copy of 'Windmill Tilter' is coming out later on. As is 'Music For Large and Small Ensembles' (ECM 2LP) and the Incus LP.
  10. Lost for words to read this, although he had clearly been unwell for a while based on the reports on this site. What an incredible, versatile musician and what a great soul, a huge credit to this country and to Canada over a lifetime of work. To say he will be hugely missed is putting it mildly and we were very lucky that he chose to be resident here. RIP Mr Wheeler - thank you for the music and just glad I was able to catch a good number of your concerts and just thankful that in later years the appearances over here were regular. Those birthday big band gigs in particular.
  11. Yes, it came out on Toshiba (I have it somewhere upstairs). Don't think that King ever did that one. Schema/Rearward have done the 'companion' album to that - must get hold of it !
  12. Yes, those are very good. Followed by 'The Freedom Rider' and 'Roots & Herbs'.
  13. Jackie McLean 'Bluesnik' (BN 47W6rd DG mono) Followed by - 'Jackie's Bag' (47W63rd mono)
  14. Clarke/Boland 'The Golden 8' (BN NY USA, mono)

    Bob Berg

I caught him in 'Eastern Rebellion' at Ronnie Scotts several times. The first time must have been just after he took over the tenor role from George Coleman. The band played much of the material from the first 2 Eastern Rebellion albums (David Williams was on bass). Also saw Berg a bit later on with Miles - much more of a fusion feel to his playing in that band.
  16. Nice one Yeah this one seems to be plentiful in terms of strata east titles...don't think I spent more then $35 on my mint copy. Wish all strata east titles were more in this price ballpark!! I think mine (near mint) was about 15 Euros
  17. Nice tribute today in The Times (UK). Shame it's behind a paywall but basically stressing what a fine, decent guy Joe seems to have been.
  18. Sorry to hear this. Certainly influential in Charlie Ventura's 'Bop For The People' band in terms of the wider popularisation of bop (such as it was). RIP
  19. Absolutely !
  20. One for the Referendum...
  21. Get me to this shop.... fast !
  22. They were definitely 'in' around them. 'Street Life' would have been current - in fact I remember being in a record shop (now long gone) circa 1976 and a load of teens of both sexes digging 'Those Southern Knights' as it was given a spin on the deck. I could've been one of them. Crusaders rescued me from Heavy Rock and pointed me to some initial steps down a jazzy soul path. RIP Joe Sample The ironic thing is that the same shop had a Blue Note brown-bag US import twofer of 'The Young Rabbits' on display in the window at the time but everyone ignored that. It was in Taunton by the way - back of beyond in jazz terms.
  23. A Salmond Braveheart The Crankies
  24. I had a similar problem John until I returned my CD player to Naim for a firmware update, which got rid of the issue. Damned annoying though !
