  1. 7.30 pm start at Ronnies these days? In the past shows at only ever got going around 9-9.30 and the last show (of 4 sets, 2 each band) went on well past midnight. In fact if you wanted a beer for the last show you had to purchase a sandwich (or as a minimum option - a 'biscuit') before they would serve you with it. Good old West-End licensing laws. I used to quite like sitting on the RHS by the wall as there was that great David Redfern print of Miles in his denim suit looming down up there. Failing that, right up front by the mike was always a good spot (in the lucky eventuality that you got placed there - which I did for Bill Evans' last appearance at the club). Not sure how this equates to the new layout these days though.
  2. John Patton Mosaic Select, CD3
  3. Sept or Oct? My bank are threatening to stop me at the airport and confiscate all cards..
  4. Don't worry - the pressure relief valve is already blown and I am resigned to emptying all pockets. 'Advance intell' from the guys in Tokyo has already seen to that.. I'll definitely consider a copy of the Zeitlin on CD to go with the Mosaic Select.
  5. Excellent ! Two more to add to the (ever expanding) Tokyo shopping list. Thanks for the heads up !
  6. That one's good !
  7. For a minute I thought someone was selling Clifford Brown's trumpet !
  8. And there was me thinking that this might be a 'new' Coleman Hawkins release !
  9. Vi Redd Red Foxx Helen Reddy
  10. His latest programme on Walter Sickert is very good..
  11. Got to meet him during his last gig in this area with his trio. Very nice and approachable guy !
  12. I'll have to be quicker to read his monthly list next time then Usually arrives when I am at work so guaranteed that the rarer stuff is gone by the time I've perused it !
  13. Best Blue Note original deal I ever came across was a Mobley 'No Room For Squares' mono original with ear for £5 ! The vinyl was fairly beat up but the sleeve was fine. Even in that state I suspect that the LP would have sounded pretty good, in retrospect, as Plastylite BN LPs are pretty well nuclear-proof in terms of their play-back resilience to surface damage. Like an idiot I passed on it and it was gone of course next time I went to the shop having reconsidered. It would have made a nice reserve copy if nothing else.. Recommended ! Alas re: community fairs, about the only credible offerings at the ones around here are home-made cakes etc.
  14. I thought I'd done similarly well getting an NY mono "Indestructible" for £9 last summer. I only realised last week that it was 'earless' so probably not such a bargain. Sounds good though. That's still a great price. That would be a Liberty-era pressing but, even so.. Not in London !
  15. Picked up a stereo NY USA of the Shorter a year or so ago. Fine condition and cost me about £15 !
  16. Pretty good - as is another one in this series called 'Stonehenge'. Both quite rare - and you can hear where Kenny Wheeler got some of his arranging influences. Rendell/Carr 'Live' is an excellent LP. Also lucky enough to have a mint copy. Notable participants in the invited studio 'audience' were John Le Mesurier and 'Alf Garnett' of TV fame.
  17. Bill Russo 'Russo In London' (Columbia Lansdowne, mono) Rendell/Carr Quintet 'Live' (Columbia Lansdowne, stereo)
  18. I don't know if I'm going to continue with this series. They press at RTI and I've had 3 out of ten records with noticeable dish warp and in my last shipment, Kenny Drew's "Undercurrent" has a glob of some gooey stuff on one side. After a nightmarish return sequence with my copy of Tina Brooks' "True Blue", I haven't even tried returning this. I got the full set of the 45rpms as a subscriber and stopped when they finished that series. I'm happy to leave it at that. One can have too much of a good thing - and that includes Blue Notes.
  19. Spinning Jenny Jenny Wren Jenny Agguter
  20. Ted Dexter Ted Heath Teddy Edwards
  21. Man From Del Monte Monty Budwig Jake Hanna
  22. I have to say that in my experience It's been that way for a long time now, whether its Eton Boys, Comrades or whoever pulling the strings. Especially in London. Not just a UK phenomenon - the same thing was very noticeable in Canada and the US even 20+ years ago. Always a damed rip-off. Personnally, I prefer gigs out in the sticks where you can pay in good ol' cash on the door..
