  1. Thumbs up here for the Jazz Crusaders. Even though I have most of the music on (mainly Japanese) vinyl I find I play this set quite a lot.
  2. Duke Jordan/Gigi Gryce Quartet 'Jazz Laboratory Series' (Signal, mono)
  3. First I have heard of its status as an endangered species. I am thinking about this one myself. Same here.
  4. Looks like I need to grab that Artie Shaw !
  5. Followed by nice find no. 3..
  6. One of today's nice finds. A UK mono 'Way Out West' on Vogue - sounds superb. Followed by the second good find. Art Farmer/Gigi Gryce on Esquire. Cover art by Diz Disley.
  7. Yes, fingers crossed. There is more information on the benefit gig held last week on Richard Williams' blog: http://thebluemoment.com/2014/08/17/postscript-a-benefit-for-kenny-wheeler/
  8. Happy Birthday MsPepper !
  9. More like...
  10. The lineup I saw was in 1981/82 and had (in addition to John Blake) Joe Ford, McCoy, John Lee and Wilby Fletcher. Around the time they did those Elektra Musician LPs. I've got the feeling I went back for the second night and also remember Blake wearing a very striking white suit. The album 'Horizon' gives a very good indication of how they sounded and the excitement of that gig.
  11. Pretty well every time I caught him and his quintet they would do at least one Joe Henderson tune. Often 'Recorda-Me' or 'Blue Bossa'. That tune is so damn familiar that my hunch is that it is a Scott original that he must have played on gigs - either that or he borrowed it from Ian Hamer. In fact come to think of it it did already seem familiar when I first heard it on 'Acropolis'.
  12. Both are well recorded (Joe Boyd/RCA, I think).
  13. Mr Potato Head Potato Valdes Spud Murphy
  14. Pass ! That tune has a very familiar sound to it. Sounds like a tune that might have been on a 1960s Blue Note session by the likes of Joe Henderson. Or (probably more likely) I'm channeling distant memories of hearing Ronnie's quintet playing it at the club ! Damn. Can't get it out of my brain now..
  15. Del Boy Boy George Jeffrey Osbourne
  16. Very sad news. One of the greatest gigs I ever attended was a McCoy Tyner quintet which had John Blake in the front line. RIP.
  17. Change of Scenes is great too.
  18. Yes, it came out first time on the brown twofer back around 1975/76 coupled with the 'At This Point In Time' session. I remember buying it as a cutout and being astonished at just how good it was. Prime Elvin and Morgan - with the added bonus of fine Coleman and Farrell.
  19. Get's my vote ! Thanks for the information on that.
  20. Kenny Wheeler 'Windmill Tilter' (Fontana, stereo) Gordon Beck 'Experiment With Pops' (Major-Minor, stereo)
  21. Manfred Mann Chapter 3 would make a very nice double CD !
  22. I'm still looking for a vinyl if you ever come across one, Clifford
  23. Somebody grab the Shorter !
