  2. I did have the Woody Shaw set at the top of my current list. It's probably going to be bumped off in favour of this one though.

  4. Remember seeing/hearing Rich's band play that suite live at Ronnie Scotts.. Listening highlight of a week filled with listening highlights - The multiple takes of 'Keen & Peachy' on the Woody Herman Columbia Mosaic last night.

  8. Hope it was a good one !
  9. I have a US mono Limelight 'Slightly Latin' (picked up at either the JRC or Academy in NY I think) as well as a UK Limelight stereo issue with different sleeve art - in the US the mono version seems to be more common, for some reason. There's significantly more clarity on the Mosaic version - although the UK Limelight runs it fairly close. Vinyl noise on the Mosaic is far superior. The ensemble passages on 'Slightly Latin' are quite muddy in places e.g. during the chanting on the Limelight mono - the Mosaic version picks out the detail. I would agree with Clifford that 'not essential but nice to have' if you have good original copies.
  10. Great set this one - they have done a fabulous sonic job with the 180g LPs. Certainly, the clarity exceeds that of both the original Mercury LPs (not to mention the Mercury/Limelight 11CD set - which is blown out of the water) and the vinyl is super-quiet. Recommended ! In particular, Kirk's flute playing on 'I Talk With The Spirits' really benefits from the presentation in this set. Plus I suspect that the set will result in quite a few new fans of 'Slightly Latin'. Was there anyone who was more of a master at putting together on his LPs wildly diverse but mutually compatible selections where the whole is more than the sum of the parts?
  11. LP1 - 'I Talk With The Spirits'. Crystal clear sonics.
  12. Jones The Butcher Godfrey Pikey
  13. Big jazz-quotient on the BBC2 50 Years Sports highlights show tonight. I recognised recordings by Lonnie Smith, Big John Patton and Jimmy Smith/Oliver Nelson as backing for the old B&W sports clips.
  14. CD3 on repeated spin. The group with Mike Nock is great. Big for this one !
  15. Sad news, very sorry to hear this. Always enjoyed reading his sleeve notes for LPs from way back (Buddy Rich etc.) and he always came across in print as a real genuine enthusiast and friend of jazz - RIP.
  16. Cecil Parkinson The Maggon Dan Dire
  17. Blimey - Percy Thower and Barbara Woodhouse. Blast from the past ! And very young messrs Paxo, Hislop and Merton. Not exactly much in the way of 'highlights' after 2000 though - more like 'low-lights'. That 'Jazz 625' photo above is of the one with Tubby Hayes, Jimmy Deuchar, Alan Ganley etc. of course.
  18. Happy Birthday Erik - hope it's a good one !

  20. Nice little bit about London-based Gearbox Records with a piccy of their lathe and some Blue Note LPs. Noticed also that Gerald Short has one of the Clarke/Boland German Vogue LPs, Jef Gilson and Harold McNair RCA on display. Nice ! http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/magazine-26990263
  21. Something about manufactured landscapes and them being not as natural as we think. Cue attractive visuals of Stowe, Stourhead etc.
