  1. Drewe Arms might also be an option for me. Sundays in August are a reasonable bet, travel wise.
  2. Yes, if I manage to head over I'll say hello. It will be nice to catch a set by the Westbrook Trio.
  3. Stanley Holloway Stanley Unwin Ivor Cutler
  4. and then a subsequent Westbrook LP ('Release') had a cover with a real tank on it (possibly a photo shot at Bovington Tank Museum?)
  5. Quite possibly. With it being a Friday night would make the drive to Exeter feasible.
  6. Man on the Moon Bobby Hutcherson Harold Land
  7. Marcel Poop Sid Snot Cupid Stunt
  8. Any Mosaics? (isn't Matt G. a Mosaic customer?)
  9. Weeds revived the name but it was a different club. The original one closed in the 60s. Sadly, the latest Cellar recently closed. Is there a location lined up to take the place of the most recent 'Cellar'? First time I've heard mention of that weird disappearance of Claude Ranger on one of these pages (it has a CBC audio documentary about the mystery). Remember seeing him with P J Perry.
  10. Whilst listening to the CDs of Harold Land's 1958 performances at this long-gone enthusiast-run Vancouver Club, I noticed this blog. http://theoriginalcellarjazzclub.blogspot.co.uk/ Some fascinating stuff on there, including early photos of Carla Bley, Ornette, Don Cherry, Joe Gordon and Billy Higgins.
  11. Jiminy Cricket Geoff Boycott Rosie Boycott
  12. Holst's 'Planets' Suite almost struck me as overwhelmingly influenced by the impact of WW1.
  13. Looking forward to this one. It's 'in the post'.
  14. Wreckless Eric Eric Bloodaxe Ivar The Boneless
  15. They are very good - for my money easily the best of his later recordings, recorded at Chappels Studio in Central London. There were 3LPs I think - compiled in the Mosaic Black Lion box and also a CD box put out by Black Lion (Alan Bates?). Recommended.
  16. Always a good read. The 'Pepys of our time' .
  17. Graham Garden Tim Brooke-Taylor Bill Oddie (jazz fan)
  18. Welcome back, Brownie !
  19. Melvin Van Peebles Pebbles Bamm Bamm
  20. Great post, Mark ! That pen-picture is pretty well exactly how I would have pictured him.
  21. What a shame - but what a good long life ! RIP The last thing I can remember him being on is JJ Johnson's 'Brass Project', where he was featured on some of the tracks. Did he record anything more recent?
  22. I meant nothing mean in what I said...I love Art's music and still rate hearing him at Ronnie Scott's in 1980 as one of my best musical experiences....EVER. I just ..... DON'T LIKE THE TITLE. I saw him around that time in London too. It was only for 5 minutes or so at the RFH - with just piano accompaniment I think (possibly Hank Jones) but it remains one of the greatest things I ever heard and the audience was rendered hushed by it, you could hear a pin drop ! Big fan of the 'Straight Life' book too. I hope that no offence has been taken by comments on this thread as I'm sure that no ill-will was meant and that members here are some of Art's biggest fans on the planet.
  23. "Appearing soon in elevators near you..?"
