Whole batch of Mosaic Selects and Singles running low
sidewinder replied to miles65's topic in Mosaic and other box sets...
I've enjoyed the Capitol Teagarden set so have gone for the Roulette whilst it's still here. This is turning out to be an expensive and nerve-racking week ! Looks like the Teagarden has just gone.. -

Are there any box bargains currently available?
sidewinder replied to GA Russell's topic in Mosaic and other box sets...
Sadly.... yes I did. Ah well, it'll be back (he says hopefully). I did have a look on Spotify and couldn't find it but did enjoy catching up on some MFSB and Jones Girls disco stuff for old times sake ! -

I'm a sucker for all of those Roulette sets that Mosaic have put out - not a dud between them and some stupendous stuff (especially the two Basies and the Maynard behemoth). Too bad I missed the Dinah Washington when it disappeared in the 2010 mega-blitz but sounds like I can catch up with it via the internet. Mosaic did the Roulette catalogue proud ! Nice one, Alexandros. Sounds like everyone is happy. -

Sounds good to me re: the Sarah Vaughan. The Django I've had on the back-burner for years and years and also heard most of, glad to have finally picked up a copy at long last. -

Great idea ! I'm interested in this set myself. -
Ellington 1930s big-band Mosaic

I've 'succumbed' to The Duke as well. $159 is a good deal - plus the £/$ rate is not too bad at the moment. So - my latest order wil be Duke, Django and Sarah Vaughan. Van Basten II - that Mingus set is pretty good ! -

US-only shipping by the looks of it so anyone wanting to buy from Europe is stuffed (unless they can collect it via a US Embassy I guess..) -
The only info I've heard on this was from saxophonist/Tubby Hayes expert Simon Spillett and I think he's written (probably info from producer Tony Hall) that the Tempo masters were destroyed by Decca back in the early 70s. So, no master tapes exist of any of the Tempo sessions and any reissue mastering would have to be from pristine original pressings.

Excellent ! Can't keep up with this. Django seems to have gone now from 'Last Chance' as well. They weren't kidding when they said that stock was very low. -

Maybe I wasn't the last to pick one up - I did check the 'Last Chance' list after I'd got my order processed and email received and both were still showing at that stage. I'm not sure if those things show status immediately or if there is a bit of a lag? Editted to say - still seems to be available in the alternative jazz universe at jazzmessengers.com ! http://www.jazzmessengers.com/en/10128/sarah-vaughan/the-complete-roulette-studio-sessions -

The Jasmine CDs and LPs from the Tempo material are all needle-drops as well I think - taking that into account, they did a pretty good job.

(heck, really sorry...) This sort of reminds me of that last 'night of the long knives' when all those boxes and Selects all disappeared real fast. Was that back in 2010? -

Sarah Vaughan gone, the moment I was checking out!!! Vanished. Holy Jeez - Ordered it just a few minutes ago myself so maybe (hopefully) I got the last one? -

Looks like my next order will be the Django and Sarah Vaughan boxes ! -
I've got a load of their Tempo reissues put out on vinyl (Jazz Couriers, Wilton 'Bogey' Gaynair etc.) and they sound OK. Also a load of early 80s Coltrane Impulse reissues - again, they sound fine. At one time this label's reissues were ubiquitous over here. Not a patch on original Impulse LPs though.

Which Mosaic Are You Enjoying Right Now?

Zeitlin CD3. The 'Zeitgeist' material. -
My first reaction when I saw that this book was coming out was that maybe Ashley Kahn's book has been 'pulled' to make way for this one (with its official-looking '75 Years' sticker on the front). I thought the Richard Cook book was, on the whole, disappointing but still a fairly enjoyable read. Somewhat cursory in terms of its level of coverage. The photos seemed almost like an afterthought too.

Just spotted this event coming up at this week's Cheltenham Jazz Festival.. http://www.cheltenhamfestivals.com/jazz/whats-on/2014/75-years-of-blue-note/ The book is up for pre-order on Amazon too (due out in October). Will be looking forward to this as I've enjoyed the Verve volume/tome that he previously put out. http://www.amazon.com/Blue-Note-Years-Finest-Jazz/dp/1452141444/ref=sr_1_1?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1398708636&sr=1-1&keywords=Richard+Havers+Blue+Note

Just picked this up today and can confirm that it sounds significantly better than the Atlantic Original Sound digipak version from 1998 (not sure if this is the version you're referring to), which i found to be annoyingly hot and harsh. Actually pretty stoked with this; ummed and ahhed in the store but i guess i gambled and won on this one. I'm not usually one for re-buying stuff that i already have for the sake of better sound but i'm starting to see the positive side of it. I would agree with that. I have both versions too and the new '1000 Yen' series issue sounds significantly better all round.

Earlier on - John Coltrane 'Complete Sun Ship Session' (Mosaic), LP1

Yeah, I forgot about those. Most of those I've heard did little for me. I may have to revisit them one of these days. Right now: the excellent sound surprised me: Great set ! Picked it up back in the day when they were dumping deletion copies from the US here in the UK e-masse at about £1.99 each. Just after the first 70s oil crisis ! No kidding ! Should have got change from £50 for that one..
