  2. That 'Commitment' LP is probably the first one of his I ever heard too (on the radio) and it is excellent. Alan Ganley on drums fitted in ideally too.

  4. Damn - what an appalling few weeks for jazz fatalities. So sorry to hear this - he was one of those guys it was a real pleasure to see live as he seemed to really thrive on small-venue audience interaction/enthusiasm. I think I caught that Cheltenham performance, Bev. Also caught him at Bath back in the 1990s with Scott Colley (the Georgian Pump Room I think - an appropriate venue for this most civil and elegant of jazz artists). I can remember him saying at that gig that he reckoned he was cut out to be 'a good old guy'. Couldn't agree more. RIP Mr Hall.

  7. Have a great birthday !
  8. Looks like the book will be coming in as an Xmas gift. Looking forward to it !
  9. I'd completely forgotten about the Music Matters - haven't play-tested mine yet !
  10. That is the definitive vinyl version of this LP. Other issues of this one (US) sound very 'tinny' and thin to my ears and so do the various CD issues.
  11. Best to put them out of their misery fast !
  12. Wasn't that BBC documentary done for 'Omnibus' and repeated by BBC4 not too long ago? I have it on DVD somewhere - will have to search it out. Hopefully the Beeb will repeat it at some time. What struck me about that programme (also mentioned in Ian Carr's 'Music Outside' book) was that he nearly packed in jazz in the early 1970s to be a postman, due to lack of work. It's good that in the latter years this changed for the better.

  14. I have the Keynote LP set and this thread will prompt me to 'hoist' it off the shelf (lifting aids required) today for a well-overdue airing. The Tristano sides are on a bonus EP with this set. Jazz Journal has an advert in it from Fresh Sound advertising the CD box. Nearly fell off the chair when I saw that.
  15. He was scheduled to do an Xmas gig in Southampton on the 12th Dec and I was really hoping to pop down there. Sadly, not to be. Didn't realise that he had been suffering from cancer but must admit that he looked a little bit frail at Swanage but played like a demon. This one is recommended - both suites were performed that afternoon in Swanage Always remember the first time I saw him on telly in the 1970s. It was on Spike Milligan's show - Spike used his trio as the half-time musical slot. Not sure what most of the audience made of it but left an impression with me ! Managed to see 'Under Milk Wood Suite' with Bobby Wellins too - some years ago now at the Bath Fest. RIP and thanks for the music Mr Tracey.
  16. very sad news, he will be missed. Glad I was able to catch his Octet at Swanage a couple of years ago. Still playing brilliantly well into his 80s - RIP.

  20. Great dignity and common sense. RIP
  21. It's good ! To my mind, more of a John Mayer session than an Amancio D'Silva session.

  23. Nice one. My 'Fellini 712' is a French MPS pressing from the late 1970s. Courtesy of Mole Jazz deletions rack.
  24. Big thanks as well to Charlie Lourie for initiating those 'brown bag' twofers with Mr Cuscuna. Presumably also for liaising with King to make it happen in Japan.
