Brits take a crack at US geography
sidewinder replied to GA Russell's topic in Miscellaneous - Non-Political
Bill - yes, I think you are right. Of course, those incomers from across the North Sea settled in the old Danelaw territories (i.e. roughly anything East of the A5 road) and the 'locals' headed West. Explains a lot, even to this day. -

Isn't that language pretty close to old medieval English? If so, interesting how that must have happened - the influence of the old Danelaw perhaps. -
I've still got an Embassy LP of Dave Brubeck and one called 'Jazz Giants at their Best' with Duke, Basie, Miles, Monk. Brubeck etc. Both bought for about 50p each at Woolies

Yep, UK CBS titles of that vintage were never renowned for their low noise.

I believe so, but I'm not sure if he produced all of the "heavy" jazz sessions. The ones I have are: Bill Barron & Ted Curson - Now Hear This (AF) Bill Barron - West Side Story Bossa Nova (Dauntless) Walt Dickerson - Jazz Impressions of Lawrence of Arabia (Dauntless) Walt Dickerson - Unity (AF) Elmo Hope - Sounds from Riker's Island (AF) There's an attractive looking Prince Lasha session with the Bossa Tres that I've never actually owned. Thought so. I have Dauntless/AF copies of all of these too, apart from the 'Rikers' (on CD). Certainly not up to Blue Note recording quality but great that they exist. Never come across the Lasha.

Wasn't there a Tom Wilson connection with Audio Fidelity? (thinking here of the Walt Dickerson sessions that were on that label).

I lost several teeth to filling breakages and after due consideration with my dentist went for the implant option. Although it costs $ and takes a good 6 months- 1 year with all of the preparatory work, it turned out to be a good move for me. They feel to me like 'real' teeth, although strictly speaking they are equivalent to dentures and require the care and attention of dentures. If the job is done well, looking at them you wouldn't know they are not real teeth - although the differences in the gum line are noticeable. In other words - not an issue ! There are two key rules to ensuring good implants (a) pick the best possible dentist to do the job and don't be tempted by overseas discount options as follow-up checks and after-care are important (b) get them done as soon as possible after the extraction to ensure best possible fusing and to avoid impact of the gums receding (best of all is to get the dentist to do the extraction and 'prep' the tooth for implant at the same time). Also, allow reasonable time between having the implants placed in-situ and installing the crowns. 4-6 months is the usual recommended duration to ensure good healing. Incredibly, didn't feel a thing during the work itself. In fact, less painful all round than getting a standard filling done, which was a nice suprise (although they really dose you up on painkillers and you may get a black eye the day afterwards due to the work done on your jaw). The stitches come out after about a week. Sorry to hear about your bone graft problems, King Ubu. One of mine required that additional treatment (sort of like extra packing) when they put the implant in too - has worked out fine so far. It's an essential measure if there isn't enough healthy bone material in the affected area to effectively secure/fuse the implant. So far I haven't set off any alarms with my mouth full of titanium..

The Tyner is also very highly recommended by me, for anyone who doesn't already have it. -

Imported Blue Note Lps with "Biem" stickers??
sidewinder replied to Homefromtheforest's topic in The Vinyl Frontier
I've got quite a few of these Blue Note import LPs with 'BIEM' stamps on the back. Early to mid-60s vintage, 4000 series. -
Just checked my Esquire Box - it looks like they have left out one of the Tito Burns tracks ('Everloving Blues' I think) and also one of the Norman Burns tracks (either track 9 or 10 per the booklet). CD total running time restrictions perhaps? A shame ! That CD4 of this box is great, especially those Kenny Graham tracks. What an interesting and under-rated group that was - covering sort of similar ground to James Moody's Modernists but with an added Brit 'angle'. The Tito Burns tracks are interesting too - incidentally I recall that vocalist Terry Devon/Burns passed away not too long ago.

Ian Carr/Don Rendell Quintet 'Live At The Union' (Stamford Audio 2LP) The tape of this one aparently was found under Ian Carr's bed - location recording in the UCL Student Union bar. Not the greatest sound quality but wonderful that it survived nevertheless.

Aha - yes, it would still be the county town I think. Bizarre when you think that the likes of Swindon and Salisbury are left of the map and are much bigger places (not to mention Bath - but that is in NE Somerset). The Anglo-Saxon purists would have course have said it should be Wilton on the map ! -

There's even an area of Lincolnshire called 'Holland' and a significant number of the locals both there and in Nolfolk/Suffolk can even trace their ancestry back to the Dutch. Big 16th and 17th Century influx I believe. I always thought that area when you get off the ferry in Zeeland was so flat that it was like being on the journey to Mordor. What a bizarre map. Seems to imply that the cosmopolitan metropolis of Trowbridge is the major town/city in Wiltshire -
If it's like the London UK stores, yes it will be. Don't think I've ever set foot in any of their establishments (thinking about it maybe I did once - over 35 years ago !)
