  4. Bizarre... Truly glad that he is still with us (hopefully). Poor Horace..
  5. I remember it as one of the earliest big boxes, like the Charlie Parker on Verve, so for me it was too expensive at the time (early Nineties when I was a student). I passed on the Parker for the same reason. The first big box I got was probably Billie Holiday on Verve. It felt like a big outlay -- but it was worth it. That Kirk Mercury box was the very first CD box I ever bought - hadn't even heard of Mosaic back then. It was over $100 Cdn at the time, which felt like a King's Ransom (but one you just had to pay). The Clifford Brown box was the next..
  6. And any of the first 3 would cause more than a few cardiac arrests ! Second the two Stan Tracey's and the 'Springboard'.
  7. Sad to see Sam Falzone's name on that long list. Was just watching a video of him in performance with Don Ellis's reunion band the other day.
  8. Haven't even started yet - although did post the cards.

  10. Remember buying that one as a cut-out from a deletions rack and it got spun non-stop for weeks on end. Amazing squared !
  11. It is true that they take up a lot of shelf space - effectively they are like laminated 2LP sets so you need to put some space aside. What I've found though is that unless you have mint-ish, crackle-free originals (fat chance for quite a few of the titles) the MMs provide the best vinyl versions that are out there. Whether or not they are better than the originals is I guess subjective to the listener - I find they are more balanced and have with a wider soundstage, sort of more 'refined'. Less of the mid-range bloom than you get with RVGs original pressings of the 50s and 60s. Perhaps that could be at the expense of 'edge'/excitement. I also find that running them through a record cleaning machine from the outset helps too, to ensure optimal clarity of sound.
  12. They refer to it as 'England's Carol' I think (I think that's how it is titled in the Mosaic box). One that I always wished that the MJQ would have done is the medieval 'Coventry Carol'.

  14. Haven't we had that one?
  15. Gunther Schuller/JJ Johnson/Miles Davis 'Music For Brass' (Columbia 6-eye DG mono) Preceded by a couple of recent Music Matters 2x45rpm Blue Notes. Both of these classic sessions, I have to say, sound magnificent in these pressings. Donald Byrd 'Royal Flush' Joe Henderson 'Mode For Joe'
  16. Hmmm - My LP copy sounds pristine. Cost no more than a fiver too. Agree that it merits a CD though. I bought it back in 1978 when it came out. First copy had fried eggs underneath so returned it. Second was only mildly better. These were the dark days of flimsy vinyl. Maybe Nottingham HMV got a bad batch. Pye Records - always iffy at the best of times. Must have been lucky with mine I guess.
  17. Personally I would have been happy for the 45rpm series to continue with a few of the more obscure titles. This release should fill in the reissue vinyl gap for anyone who didn't get the Analogue Productions issues. Just been listening to a couple of the recent ones (e.g. the Joe Henderson) and they are very good inded.
  18. Looks like Music Matters will be concentrating on a series of 12 'classic' 33rpm releases for 2014. No word as yet re: whether or not there will be continuation of the 45rpm series. 33rpm titles announced: BLP- 1577 John Coltrane - Blue Train BST- 84154 Grant Green - Idle Moments BST- 84031 Hank Mobley - Soul Station BST- 84123 Kenny Burrell - Midnight Blue BST- 84041Tina Brooks - True Blue BST- 84112 Dexter Gordon - Go! BST- 84140 Joe Henderson - Page One BST- 84003 Art Blakey And The Jazz Messengers - Moanin' BST- 84157 Lee Morgan - The Sidewinder BST- 84059 Kenny Drew - Undercurrent BST- 81588 Sonny Clark - Cool Struttin' BST- 81595 Cannonball Adderley - Somethin' Else
  19. Congratulations to Mr Terry !

  21. Enjoyed this one recorded HD from the box last night, together with the recent follow-up movie..
  22. Hmmm - My LP copy sounds pristine. Cost no more than a fiver too. Agree that it merits a CD though. New Jazz Orchestra 'Le Dejeuner Sur L'Herbe' now long overdue on CD. 'Phil Seamen Live' (both Verve) too..

  24. I think she's Dutch but yes, seems to be quite popular over here with a bit of a 'retro' style.
