  1. John Coltrane 'Sun Ship' (MCA Impulse)
  2. I was planning on driving down out West to see Mike Westbrook's big band this afternoon - however the predicted weather for the whole area looks abysmal and the drive would be an ordeal. What a shame !
  3. Ludo Kennedy Leonard Chess Leonard Cheshire Cheshire Cat Top Cat Bagpuss
  4. Happy Birthday !
  5. I guess the only reason that snippet survived was that it was used on some compilation program. The rest of the show (and the master tapes) were 'apparently' wiped by the Beeb. I keep hoping that by some miracle, the BBC will unearth a previously unknown full copy. Too bad that Bob Monkhouse wasn't recording jazz on his VCRs .
  6. I thought the roof was going to blow off last night !
  7. Yes, he's brilliant. A good article about him in this month's 'Jazzwise' (he's just turning 70). The first time I saw him live many years ago he was with Elvin Jones' Jazz Machine, along with Pat LaBarbara in a 2-tenor front line. Skid mentions this gig in the article. That band was incendiary !
  8. Looks like Jimmy Page in drag.
  9. Clare Fischer 'Surging Ahead' (UK Fontana, mono)
  10. Not being an expert on '321...' Roger ( ) but I have a feeling that it ended over 20 years ago so - suspect that is a 'yes'.
  11. Coleman Hawkins David Coleman Mottie

  13. Always worth catching. Very nice guy too !
  14. No, a certain 'piano tinkler' beloved of the Cheltenham hordes !
  15. Cardinal Newman Cardinal Fang Cardinal Biggles
  16. Ronnie Scott on '321..' ? Unbelievable - thanks for posting this.
  17. Nice score! Bob Downes is great! Cheers. By minor miracle the copy was mint ! Now spinning: Michael Garrick 'October Woman' (Argo, stereo)
  18. Colonel Sanders Jill Sander Black & Decker Ant and Dec Laura Dekker Harold Shipman Christie Burke Hare

  20. Thank goodness they didn't give it to 'you know who'. Only a matter of time before Jedward gets on the show I guess.
  21. Bob Downes 'Open Music' (UK Philips, stereo)
  22. Really? No complaints at all with the sound of my LP copy, although Pye pressings could be somewhat 'iffy'. The Louis Bellson is good - I was there on the night some of that was taped.
  23. I seem to remember that Ronnie was also a Joe Henderson man. Yes, that is definitely true. Several times I remember him opening a set with 'Recorda Me'. He also used to mention Joe Henderson in his jokes (ie. 'We have Joe Henderson in the club next week....(audience gasps).... Joe 'piano' Henderson.. )
  24. Sat through quite a few performances by Ronnie with his various bands and there's no doubt that he was one of the very finest tenorists to ever come from these shores. His playing had a very strong Mobley influence, extremely lyrical with great sense of 'structure' in his solos (and minimum grand-standing). In the 'Couriers' days Tubby was still developing and very much the young gun, whereas Scott was the more established player and a UK 'touring veteran'.
