  2. Ditto ! I bought a few things from him when he manned the desk at 'Ray's'. This programme could probably have been a shoe-in for the late Ed Dipple of Mole Jazz, with his jazz LP collection stored in a lock-up garage. Jazz LP collecting and London housing don't mix !

  5. Looks like the sort of crazy itinery Spinal Tap might have done ! Best of luck to them with the tour - they have had some good press over here of late.
  6. Yeah, what's $1300 for a Blue Note these days? Bargain !
  7. If you like that one, check out his latest ! Kenny's writing got better and better.

Not the new batch but picked up a copy of the Vocalion Don Rendell "Jazz Six/Tenorama" today, courtesy of the good people in Germany at Bear Family. Another one that has eluded me for far too long ! Incidentally, if anyone needs the NJO 'Western Reunion' the Vocalion site is showing that one now as pretty well sold out. Ditto the 'Will Power'. Both of those should return to circulation circa 2050.

  12. It's threads like this that remind me I should log in every five minutes... Congrats, sidewinder! Thanks - eagerly anticipating the mail here . That one has eluded me for years !

That's very interesting Roger - the odds on Joe Harriott just improved I think (hope?). A Harriott Super-Bundle of 'Movement', 'High Spirits' and 'Hum Dono' perhaps? On the other hand, it could be Geoff Love/Manuel & His Music of the Mountains.. And maybe I can suggest a left field/total wild-card candidate for this batch - David Mack's 'New Directions'.

  18. No kidding - hardly the same festival now from the ones in which I saw Bennie Maupin, Ornette, Claudia Quintet, John Hollenbeck, Ingrid Laubrock, Pat Martino and myriad other interesting shows. I happened to catch Jamie C.'s Radio 2 show yesterday afternoon in the car (Cheltenham feature) and apart from a track by Abram Wilson it was a jazz-free zone. Craig Charles' show right afterwards was 200% better.. (Average White Band's 'Pick Up The Pieces' which opened the show had me thanking God that real music was back ).

  20. As I mentioned in the weather thread, this fits nicely with my holiday plans as I head back to civilisation for a couple of weeks. I've booked a campsite nearby for a couple of nights. Ringing the pub they were a bit vague about this concert - suspect I got someone not very high up in the pecking order - so I'll ring back a bit closer to the time. How have you got your ticket in the past? Check Mike and Kate Westbrook's site for details of their diary. An email to the board admin should provide further details. At that last concert I was able to buy a ticket at the door, no problem. The place is not very big - they probably have to vacate cows out of the barn before the concert. Damn cool place IMO.
  21. Nothing new I guess. Remember the hype in the late 80s when Loose Tubes, Tommy Chase, Steve Williamson and Courtney were given the big marketing treatment (with TV adverts full of hard bop-ish tunes). It lasted about a year and then died a death (circa June 1990) when the sales figures bombed. Looks like the same thing is going on at Cheltenham right now - but this time they have ditched all the jazz and just put Paloma Faith, Melody Gardot etc. under a 'jazz' umbrella to make it sound good to the "aspirationals" and lure in the $$.

  24. Just checked the 'Simply Not Cricket' book and apparently this LP came out originally on Graham Collier's Mosaic label (the UK label, not the US reissue label that is). Strange that I've never seen it before - must have come and gone like a rat up an aqueduct ! Nigel Morris's bio is here. Strange the direction he eventually took: http://calyx.perso.neuf.fr/mus/morris_nigel.html Fascinating. Yes, 'Isotope' - I remember him in that. Then Harry Beckett's Joy Unlimited I think. What a strange turn of events - life certainly throws some curve-balls..
