  1. No kidding ! Where else are you going to see Elton John standing next to the Admiral of the (ex) Fleet and sining hymns?
  2. Charles Fox used to play the first track of Henry Lowther's 'Child Song' as his theme for 'Jazz Today'. Liked that one ever since. I have to admit that I'm quite enjoying listening to the service, now that the Mobley CD has ended. Kate Middleton's dress is nice..
  3. Is that a parachute in his pocket? Hope so..
  4. Have a good birthday, Niko !

Maybe exile in Germany allows for such 'expression'. Imagine trying to do that in Maidstone or High Wycombe !
  6. Trainee codger checking in here. I'm ashamed to say a certain event is on the TV, however in partial mitigation I have a Hank Mobley record playing in the background. Talking of Charles Fox, I remember when he once played both of the side 2 tracks from the (at the time) just released Miles' 'Water Babies' album, in full and back to back, on his show. Now where would you get that these days? Anyone remember his 'The Arranger In Jazz' series? Covered everyone from Jelly Roll Morton to George Russell in 1 hour episodes.
  7. I know that Charles Fox eventually retired to Weymouth and spent his final years there. And no, Stanley Cowell came from Yeovil. Sorry for the thread de-railing..
  8. Good one ! Freddie Roach 'Good Move' (BN NY USA, stereo)

  10. Yeah - 5.15 sounds about right. In my case it was a mad dash rush home from school !

  12. Illusion Suite is on e-music for those prepared to sup with the devil download. One of the great things about Charles Fox's 'Jazz Today' programme of way gone by was that you could hear cuts from LPs like this one ('Cal Massey' being the track in question) and then promptly snap up the LP when it appeared in the racks.

  14. Maybe it will get you to the door of Cafe Otto though to collect those 10 beers ! One of the 'sleeper' events at these Fests is the daily post-breakfast film session from 9-10am - I'm assuming that it is Mark Cantor that is presenting these sessions. They usually have some fascinating and rare video snippets from Mr Cantor's collection. Hopefully there will be some good stalls there too selling memorabilia. 1999 was a great year, with Ray Avery (now sadly passed on) selling some of his signed prints and Bill Claxton signing copies of his book. Ray was taking lots of shots of the bands that year too.
  15. Got 4 or 5 of those - agree that they are a better spec, although I would have preferred even heavier ply. The 'New York Is Now' and 'Evolution' are pretty damn cool.

  17. Wasn't 1998-99 around the time that the Verve Elite series came out too? A mythical time of riches !
  18. Deadline for ticket bookings on the London 2012 site has about half an hour to go. Needless to say, there is last minute mad panic from across the globe and the site crashed just as I was completing my (hopelessly optimistic) selections.. Site Crash Mayhem "A spokeswoman for the Olympic Organising committee said "some transactions were getting through". " I guess that was me?
  19. well I do, for one. Especially when they've got Ringwood Ales on cask in place of overpriced lattes.. "You were lucky. We had to make do wi' tea urn" (said in broad Yorkshire voice..)
  20. Are you buying up the entire 2nd hand jazz stock in Manchester, Bill?
  21. I was seriously pondering an expedition out to LA to attend this event - sadly have had to hit those plans on the head. The one time I did go along to one of these (back in the late 90s - 1999 I think) was great fun !

  23. It's mythical, even over here. Seems to have come and gone in a whisker !
