  1. Gigi Campi does make announcements on that Prague DVD (Francy Boland being the epitome of 'understated', I don't think he liked doing intros). Essential CBBB !
  2. The Campi film? That was great! I think it was on the German/French arte TV channel - and I think I don't have it on DVD, just watched it when it was on... would love to catch it again, the interviews with all the guys (Johnny Griffin!) and the music - it was great to watch AND liste for a change! Got to dig through my DVDs to see if I might have it... Yes - it was on 'Arte' I think. It's in German with no subtitles and is one of those films which has me kicking myself that my German is not better than being able to order a beer..
  3. The Big 18 'The Swing Collection' (UK RCA stereo, 2LP)
  4. He was highly entertaining, for sure. I guess the steroids that these guys take won't have helped. Sorry to hear this.

Just been listening to Lee Morgan's 'Standards' album again - that one stands up as a good Duke Pearson session too. Some nice arrangements.
  6. Strange that I came across the LP of 'Faces' this weekend. That one has eluded me to date. I have it on video somewhere though (I think) - if it's the same session that resulted in much of the footage for the German (or was it Swiss?) TV tribute to Gigi Cambi. Maybe The King knows this one?

Very interesting ! Especially to hear that he was thinking of getting Mainstream to record them. A sign of very significant change at Blue Note at the time, I guess. Do I detect also the embryo of Frank Foster's 70s Big band out of this lineup?
  8. Clark Terry Plus International Festival Big Band 'At The Montreux Jazz Festival' (UK Polydor, stereo). 1969 recording, dodn't think this has ever been reissued on CD.
  9. Out Of The Blue 'Inside Track' (Blue Note DMM). Not bad for £3 !
  10. The copy I have is marked 'Reprinted 1985' with the title as you describe and published by Faber. I think I bought it within the last 10 years though - the copy I used to consult was a public library copy. At a time when you could still access things like this, the Ian Carr 'Music Outside' and Dick Heckstall-Smith etc. biographies on the public purse !
  11. Amazing to think that I used this book to judge future Coltrane and Dolphy purchases back in the day. If he hated it, I bought it ! Still a hugely entertaining read - and nice that he references many very obscure UK releases in the reviews.
  12. A couple of new acquisitions: Gerald Wilson Orchestra 'Live and Swinging' (Pacific Jazz, stereo). Canadian pressing Billy Bauer 'Plectrist' (Japanese Verve, mono)
  13. 'Dirty Dozens?' Nice finds, sounds like fun !

Probably 'Wahoo' in terms of jazz blowing content but I also really like the two BN big band albums and also 'The Right Touch', 'The Phantom' and 'Sweet Honey Bee' are great too. Also really like the material collated on the Mosaic Select with Anddy Bey, Airto and Flora Purim, much of which was fairly obscure.
  15. Wasn't he a vicar? - so sermon style came naturally I guess. To the list of all time greats I would like to add Ian Carr's 'Music Outside' (Northway) - still the best overview of UK Contemprary jazz of the 70s. Carr's biographies of Miles and Keith Jarrett were pretty damn good too..
  16. Totally agree, Larry. That book (the original silver paperback) is a gem and still a highly educational read for me. Very frustrating when it came out though (76?) as many of the LPs listed were OOP here or had never even been issued here in the first place. I have yet to be disappointed with a title that appeared in that volume.
  17. The 'Midnight Slows' LPs were all over the London LP shops in the 1970s. I often wondered what the music was like in them - but that was not their primary appeal.
  18. Acker Bilk/Stan Tracey Strings 'Horn of Plenty' on UK Columbia LP for £1 ! The first 'Out Of The Blue' group LP on Blue Note for £2 !
  19. That one could pass as a great Cedar Walton album just as much as a great Ray Brown album. Nice !
  20. Lady Gaga Shorty Rogers' African Lobster Buster Crabb
  21. Best Wishes for a good day !
  22. Sun Ra Son House Sun Yat-sen
  23. Dr Who Tom Baker Sylvester McCoy
  24. What a great lineup ! Now why haven't I seen that one before?
