  1. Thad & Mel Complete Solid State set, LPs 1 and 2
  2. Last time I saw him was at the North Sea Fest a few years ago, directing the Dizzy Gillespie Tribute Big Band there. Presented the band in a most professional manner and even had his 'bone on the stage in its stand - although I don't think he played it in the end. Was hoping he'd get a solo or two in.
  3. Yes, 'Mobley's Message' on Esquire vinyl is quite a rare one. Issued in the late 50s in very limited quantity by London based Esquire Records, who had the UK license to Prestige issues at the time. There should be 'RVG' in the runout and the sound quality will be excellent. These issues usually sound far superior to the Prestige/New Jazz issues of the time. I've got a good number of them but - alas - no 'Mobley's Message'.

  13. At more than twice the price of a "regular" Impulse! pressing, they should be. But they are German ! "Vorsprung durch technik" as they say in Germany etc etc (plus any other Audi/BMW marketing nonsense that comes to mind)
  14. Here's wishing Slide well. Brilliant trombonist and great arranger/leader. One of the best.

  22. Check out that Med Flory 'Sax Maniacs' on CD4. Jim Hall doing rock 'n' roll !
  23. Great as Maini's playing is throughout this set, fans of Zoot Sims will also like it lots I think. CD3 has some fantastic live Sims recorded in Hollywood in 1956 along with Maini and Jack Sheldon. Some of the best Zoot I've ever heard ! Nice booklet too. Seems to clear up the story re: Maini's 'suicide'. Would seem to be a tragic accident caused as a result of fooling around with firearms when 'under the influence'.
