  2. Great stuff Erik ! Those Sun Ra reissues are great (I have the 'Atlantis') - they sound pretty good and are priced OK. Heck, they probably sound way better than the Saturn originals (not difficult). Check out the 'Strange Strings' if you can find it. Also recommended are the Art Yards - 'Disco 3000', 'On Jupiter' etc. I got hold of mine through Honest Jons in London but I think places like Dusty Groove stock them. Yeah - that's the worst thing about turntables and vinyl. Prone to damage by kids, stray animals etc. Yet another reason why I don't have cats in the house.

  4. I can definitely see them both behind the counter in an indie vinyl specialist outlet.. "Put that heap of **** LP back in the rack **hole !!'

  6. For sure this album is no masterpiece but the jazz content is way better than expected and I find the strange mix of genres to be interesting. The Garrick stuff came to mind (things like 'Jazz Praises From St Pauls' and 'Mr Smith's Apocalypse') as they offer a similar mixture of jazz and liturgy - although in the case of Garrick from an Anglican/C. of E. angle. Incidentally, the vinyl sound that Trunk have achieved is surprisingly good, seeing as though they didn't have master tapes (lost I guess) and the reissue is transferred from a (non-mint) LP. They've done a great job. Garrick and Norma have been touring a reunion of the Garrick 60s sextet quite recently by the way - with the 'Troppo' lineup. I had a ticket for the BBC performance but had to miss it . Should be on the radio soon.
  7. If it carries on this rate we'll get floods again !
  8. On vinyl? That's a pretty rare LP. There's a cameo of Rev. Frank Wright in the Chet Baker bio 'Deep In A Dream'. Holed up and strung out with Chet in Holland towards the end along with Woody Shaw. Sad reading.
  9. Dave Liebman's A&M Horizon LPs are full of this stuff !
  10. Another spin for Herbie Hancock et al 'Hear, O Israel' (Jonny)
  11. Switched to vinyl Erik?
  12. Yep, I bought the vinyl version and like it a lot. Reminds me quite a bit of the albums Michael Garrick was putting out around the same time on Deram with Norma Winstone (and Garrick also dabbled in religous themes in some of his music at this time). Herbie is on great piano form on this LP. You get a sense of him 'chomping at the bit as he starts his solos, which are very lyrical and superbly executed. Great stuff (although I admit the vocals may not be to everyone's taste).
  13. Thanks - of course ! Yet a glance at popsike shows that so many of these '47W63rd' imposters are fetching $2-3k plus. The world has gone mad ! Heck, this one even has a seam split too. I guess that adds to the cachet..
  14. Freddie Roach 'Brown Sugar' (BN NY USA mono, DG side 1)
  15. And it's not even an original pressing!!! How come I never get bids like that?? Presumably a real 'original' has '47W 63rd New York 23' on one of the labels? Oh dear !
  16. Obviously oblivious to the Credit Crunch !
  17. Around £3 of the old money back in the mid-60s, big money back then. A King's Ransom today !
  18. Just dug out the original issue mono NY LP of 'Brown Sugar' and it is a real pleasure to listen to this one again. I would agree that this one is a 'feeling' album (a real spiritual/gospel influence on this session) and it's also notable for one of those great Joe Henderson cameo appearances where his flexibility comes to the fore yet again. Incidentally, I notice that the side of my LP has the title label right at the top instead of in the middle like the usual Blue Notes. First time I've ever seen that ! Also - the version of 'The Midnight Sun Will Never Set' on this LP is an absolute classic.
  19. CD2 of the Art Blakey Jazz Messengers 1960 set. Great stuff !
  20. Yeah, this is very bad news whichever way you look at it - lots of unfortunate folks caught in the fallout. We have Tom to thank I believe for the 'Rare Groove' series and for just that alone my thanks are due. Time to pick up those Conns I need and the odd RVG.
  21. According to the news UK and most of Europe is having a 'mini monsoon' this Summer so that's the rest of the season written off I guess. Some very heavy rain yesterday (I need to de-clog my gutters). Anyone see that video of the washing being sucked into a tornado up in Lancashire? Crazy ! Eeee bah gum me washing's sucked up....
  22. I enjoyed the performance of Hank Jones and Roberta Gambarini at NorthSea a couple of years ago so this concert should be a good one. Have to say though that I found the lineup for this year's fest a tad disappointing.
