  1. Yeah, I figured that we did pretty well seeing him tour here at the age of 82. A great long life.
  2. When I saw Eastern Rebellion, Sam Jones had very sadly recently passed. David Williams had recently joined on bass. Never heard Vols 5 and 6 so will look at checking them out. That Ultra-Vybe CD set looks nice.
  3. Just digging out Andrew Hill 'Compulsion' (BN New York mono) to spin - spurred by reading a review of a 1967 'return from NYC' Chicago concert written by John Litweiler for 'Jazz Monthly' back in the day. Hill was with trio and special guests Roscoe Mitchell and Wilbur Ware. He switched to soprano sax on a few numbers, shown in one of the photos. Sam Rivers had been due to play as well but didn't make it. Interesting !
  4. Too bad that Solal has retired but he was touring here well into his senior years. I saw him some years ago on his last UK appearances, Bath I think but not sure. Even more memorable was another Bath appearance, solo that time, in the 80s in the Georgian splendour of the Assembly Rooms. Updated to say that the last appearance was 2010 in Bath, feels more recent than that. With his trio. Article here: https://www.theguardian.com/music/2010/may/20/martial-solal-jazz-piano
  5. For £10 it was certainly a bargain - and a discovery for me. Beats paying £300 + !
  6. I have given the Pure Pleasure of 'The Descendents of Mike and Phoebe' another spin this morning. First thing to say - this is a really nice album, classy stuff. After an initial spin I put it on the VPI record cleaning machine- definitely benefited, with more richness in the mid-range. Maybe these Pallas pressings benefit from this post-manufacture, quite noticeable improvement. If that £15 crate dealer is still peddling his wares I would recommend you London folks to pay him a visit !
  7. Sounds as logical an explanation as any. Next up - Joy Marshall 'Who Says... etc.' On Decca (mono) from 1965. No doubt Tubby Hayes present in the sax section. Followed by Tubby Hayes/Paul Gonsalves 'Change of Setting', World Record Club (mono) from 1967.
  8. Sounds dubious.. Spinning Joe Harriott Quintet 'Blue Harriott' (UK Columbia EP from 1959). Lively Joe Meek recording. Early group with the excellent Hank Shaw on trumpet (who I remember seeing years later at Ronnie Scotts). Kicks off with a fine version of Horace Silver's 'Senor Blues'.
  9. Recently bought a copy of Ben Markley's 'Cedar - The Life and Music of Cedar Walton' - currently in the pending pile after I have finished the 3 extensive volumes of James Lees-Milne's diaries.
  10. I've always been pretty happy with their Toliver Strata-Easts and considering the somewhat iffy quality of 70s vinyl of that era from the USA (crap shoot at best), they can be a pretty good option, being nicely done. Especially so at the £10 price point. The notification was by email for those on the Pure Pleasure mailing list. Initially I thought it was for just a couple of titles in low stock but turns out that it was for all titles they still had in stock (some being already sold out). Good to hear. That fine tune 'Avotja' is on it so that persuaded me to get it. The solo LP was also on offer but alas, failed to get that one.
  11. RIP - I first became aware of him from the initial LP issue circa 1980 of Mobley's 'Slice of the Top' and being suitably impressed. Saw him about 20 years ago in Charles Tolliver's Big Band, where he was doubling bass trombone and tuba I think.
  12. The other ones I got- John Gordon. Tolliver 'Live at Slugs Vol 1' Cecil Payne 'Zodiac' Shamek Farrah/ Sonelius Smith Tolliver 'Paper Man' Cecil McBee 'Mutima' Billy Parker 4th World Music Inc. Big Band Tolliver 'Impact' Charlie Rouse 'Two Is One' Stanley Cowell 'Musa' John Hicks 'Hell's Bells'. They screwed up with underpaying on the postage but on the whole, not complaining. There's a couple more I wish I'd gone for. 😀
  13. The announcement seemed to be low-key and they were withdrawn from sale within the week. Most were about the £10 mark, doubles such as 'Glass Bead Games' about £20. I picked up about 15, the titles I didn't have. Don't think I have ever come across an original. Glad I took a punt on the Pure Pleasure - not bad for £10 !
  14. Thanks for that. Spinning 'The Descendents of Mike and Phoebe' Strata-East/Pure Pleasure LP. Part of a sale package received from Pure Pleasure on their discontinuation of the Strata-East catalogue.
  15. Nice to hear the voices of radio announcers Charles Fox and Peter Clayton again on CD3 of the 'Fingers'. Decent CD booklet as well with interviews and rare photographs. I think JiB gave just increased the digital subscription price to the £48 per annum level. I remember seeing Bruce Turner on alto circa 1977 with Humphrey Lyttelton. Mike Pyne was on piano, the excellent Kathy Stobart on tenor and baritone. Good concert gig !
  16. Doing a Sunday afternoon sort of my rack of vintage British jazz and a peruse of the 'Labyrinth' book (beware Minotaurs..) Spinning Joe Harriott Quintet 'Abstract' (UK Columbia, mono). How is the music and sound on this one (recent reissue, presumably?)
  17. Mine has arrived and I can confirm that it is excellent. Bruce Turner, unsurprisingly, a revelation - usually better known as a mainstream stylist but here the Tristano influence is prominent. Teams very well with Coxhill.
  18. I saw him at a festival at Balboa/Newport Beach with his big band 25 years ago - took some photos of the event. Also got to chat with him and he was very approachable and friendly, talked about touring UK with Vic Lewis. RIP - a good long life of achievement, great arranger and a very under-rated tenor soloist in his younger days.
  19. Just a short post to say that I have received Amancio D'Silva 'Reflections' from Honest Jon's (overnight delivery - remarkable). It is a very good reissue - the white vinyl had me nervous but the sonics are good. Tony Higgins' notes are also very thorough and informative, including session reel photos. As for the Zev/Elemental/Jazz Detective releases I have picked up this time - no problems noted with any of them, including the Lateef.
  20. Why the negativism? All inputs to this thread should be invited instead of applying your interpretation. If nothing else, it makes the board more welcoming. Not worth my effort commenting further. 🙄
  21. Yes, I have an order in for the Amancio with HJs. Surprised that they still have the Bill Evans still in stock as it flew off the shelves everywhere else. Their stock of the Zev stuff seems limited to just the two Sun Ra's though - maybe there is more to come. I have the Bill Evans on the big Riverside CD box but not otherwise on vinyl.
  22. Stanley Turrentine 'Mr Natural' (BN Tone Poet)
  23. This thread is titled 'No one buys books'. No mention of whether or not new.
  24. I find myself buying more than ever these days (and will have to have a clear out soon). As a regular visitor to our National Trust historic houses and gardens, most of these have second hand bookshops where bargains can be found for a few £. Similarly, Oxfam. I don't think I've used a library for 30 years !
  25. Indeed - hard to believe that you are not there, facing the stage. My copies are the green deep-groove pressing.
